I just learned that over 30,000 National Guard are deployed on the Gulf Coast. That's almost 3/4ths of the number deployed to Iraq. link to FEMA

It has the following text:
More than 30,000 National Guard are on the ground to provide response, rescue, recovery and law enforcement, and are working around the clock to bring critical aid and support to hurricane victims. An additional 12,730 Active Duty military personnel have also been deployed.

And this:
Over 100 million ready meals (MREs) have been shipped by the Department of Defense to shelters and more than 170,000 meals are being served each day in affected areas.

And this:
During the past week, the U.S. Coast Guard saved 15,665 people, which is more than three times the number of lives saved in all of 2004.

While there are references to State and local management teams being self sustaining for 72 hours on FEMA's website I could not find the smoking gun that really makes it plain kindergarten English to liberals... so I gave up.

Other federal and state officials pointed to Louisiana's failure to measure up to national disaster response standards, noting that the federal plan advises state and local emergency managers not to expect federal aid for 72 to 96 hours, and base their own preparedness efforts on the need to be self-sufficient for at least that period. "Fundamentally the first breakdown occurred at the local level," said one state official who works with FEMA. 'Did the city have the situational awareness of what was going on within its borders?
"FEMA's plan mentioned by Hannity says to states not to expect help for 72 hours. Will have to find that plan."

I've heard that one too - I'll see what I can find.

Watching FOX News:

Rumsfeld mentioned that the Department of Defense is NOT the first responder. The DOD works with the local and state first responders.

FEMA's plan mentioned by Hannity says to states not to expect help for 72 hours. Will have to find that plan.

Hannity is asking Rumsfeld about the #'s of National Guard in Iraq. ----- Rumsfeld responds. 42,000 National Guard in Iraq he said. Hundred of Thousands of National Guard available in the U.S.

Weak response. I've read statistics that showed the entire military picture and how many are in Iraq. I'd have to find that link. But we have 10.2% of Active Duty and National Guard in Iraq. 25% of Active Duty and National Guard are deployed outside of this country. We have 1,000's deployed all over Europe and Japan, etc. That leaves 75% in the U.S.

Being a person who served in the Navy from 1988 to 1994, I can say two things:
1) You don't have military go into a state to do anything unless given permission
2) It takes time to surmount the amount of equipment and personnel necessary to do something on the size of the relief needed for Katrina victims.

Just because CNN and Fox News were pointing out every 5 minutes that this person needed help and that person needed help didn't mean that their were military people mobilized to help in that 5 minutes. The more the news kept pointing it out drove people into a frenzy.

It is all well and good that we "want" to help people. But then to be told by leftists that we don't care or are racist because the help isn't there yet is counterproductive.

Wow my first mention. Thanks.

25,000 new jobs

My prediction is that the 25,000 new temporary jobs that Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao announced will NOT be filled. I hope I'm wrong.
