Two Presidential Addresses

Who would have guessed, as the crisis with Katrina and New Orleans unfolded, that the Fourth Act of the Drama would culminate in a serious debate about the limits, philosophic basis, and hidden dangers of Big Government intervention in human affairs?

Tyler: I agree we need some major oversight on how the money is spent. And it needs to be spent right. As far as the rest of the devastated areas, you're right - I haven't seen the big media outcry either.

James: You make a great point, but our gov't has been telling people for ages that they should go ahead and build on flood plains and right next to the ocean and that if something happens, they'll help you take care of rebuilding. In this case, however, they went ahead and built a majority of a major US city 15 feet below sea level ... I know, I wish they wouldn't have, but they did.

Mahatma: Thanks :)

AT: I take it you heard about Kerry's silly comments about the President's speech?

Oh man, thanks for that ABC link. It always has me in convulsions when the news gets a response they don't want but it's too late to cover it up. See: Matt Lauer in Iraq.

I can't believe how many people are upset about the President giving out a toll-free number. Like that's beneath him or something? Well, if the worst they can do now is point out the President goes to the bathroom and wants to help out his constituents by giving out a toll-free number, I guess I'm all for it...

[...] There is going to be a lot of money spent, no doubt about it. Sister Toldjah thinks it’ll end up being more than $200 billion, I agree. Other fiscal conservatives are blowing their gaskets at the amount of money Bush plans on spending on the rebuilding efforts. We’re rebuilding basically the entire gulf coast. An undertaking like that won’t come cheap. Is it worth it? I’d say yes. [...]

As a fiscal conservative and a Libertarian I think the primary purpose for government funds (and government in general) is for national defense followed closely by disaster relief.

Excellent post and discussion of the issues! I'm glad I found your blog!

Sister Toldjah, there is one aspect of this that hasn't been talked about much - the personal responsibility aspect. If you chose to make your home within sight of the ocean - where a variety of natural disasters can strike - and then chose not to adequately insure yourself against those disasters, it is not wrong to question why the goverment should pay to rebuild your home.

On the state level, Mississippi, with that absolutely stupid law forbidding casinos to be built on land, but allowing them to be built on water - well, I can only say you reap what you sow.

Bush the Sugar Daddy

I didn’t listen to George Bush’s speech last night, but I’m told he plans to do what he does best: spend, spend, spend other people’s money. True?
And he didn’t sufficiently address the rampant Hurricane Katrina race-ba...

Not to say of course that we should not carefully rebuild a *NEW* NOLA ---

but ya know, SisterToldjah, I haven't heard much of an outcry over the rest of the devastated area in the mass media.

While rebuilding the rest of the coast is OK with me, I don't want New Orleans back "the way it was," that city was a nightmare of drugs, poverty and murderous violence.

And of course, how we do rebuild the parts of NOLA we intend to rebuild is a big question.

The city is sinking, the levees are sinking, the levees are inadequate, much of the city is below sea level, efforts to correct these problems were gutted by environmentalist lawsuits, etc etc.

And also, Louisiana and especially NOLA politics are as corrupt as Boston's and DC's, this project if it goes to the usual suspcets in LA. will make the Big Dig appear ahead of schedule and under budget!
