Justice prevails in Australia

I blogged back on Oct. 18th regarding a story out of Australia about a lawyer there who was claiming a “cultural time bomb” defense in an appeal for one of three rapists in a case regarding the gang rape of two girls, aged 16 and 17. The follow-up to this:

A judge has soundly rejected the appeal:

Calling a notorious Pakistani gang-rapist a “cultural time bomb” whose attacks were inevitable partly because he came from a country with “very traditional views about women” was inappropriate, inapt and offensive, a judge has said.

The comment, made by MSK’s barrister Stephen Odgers, SC, at a recent appeal hearing sparked outrage among Sydney Muslims, sexual assault counsellors and victims’ groups.

Yesterday, MSK, 27, MAK, 25 and MMK, 19, lost their appeal in the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal against minimum sentences of between 12 and 16½ years for the gang rape at knifepoint of two girls in 2002.

Bravo. It’s also good to see that the comments made by the lawyer invoked outrage in the Muslim community there. Don’t know how widespread the outrage was, I’ll give credit where it’s due.

Now if this type of multiculturalism gets denounced and rejected as well, I’ll really be celebrating.

    Muslim cleric arrested in raids

Prime Minister John Howard last week announced there was a potential terrorist threat, saying he had received intelligence indicating an attack on Australia was possible.

The threat was believed to involve people in Melbourne and Sydney, and an urgent amendment to existing anti-terrorism laws which gave police greater powers to arrest terrorist suspects as rushed through parliament as a result.
