Amy, spot on comments! The only thing I'd add is that I don't think this is so much about the media begrudging anyone who would enlist in the military to better himself as it is them trying to push the implication that "smart people wouldn't be stupid enough to join the military" - and I have little doubt that's how the MSM feels, unfortunately :(

PS... it would take a heck of a lot of dupping to get a man to join the military during war time. These fellas know JUST what they're in for. Our last duty station was Ft. Bragg, NC, and my husband is a HOOAH paratrooper/jumpmaster with the 82nd ABN. He did his year in Iraq and now we're at Ft. Jackson, SC, the Basic Training post. We see thousands of new recruits and their families every week VOLUNTEER.. and their Basic Training is executed based on the war on terror. The method of training is much more streamlined toward combat, ubran warfare and terrorism, whereas when my husband was trained at Basic 13 years ago it was much more generic. The world has changed; the military has changed; the days of men signing up not knowing what they're in for are long gone.

Now, we could do Charlie Rangle a favor and really freak him out, bringing back the draft. If he continues to discourage people from enlisting, that's where we're headed.

Sister, I'm an Army wife and there are so many West Point Grads around it ain't funny! The military today is made up of many very well educated men as well as high school grads.

But why would anyone begrudge a young man, especially with no education or in a poor area, the chance at bettering himself and his plight AND the opportunity to serve his country in the process? I'm not for signing up for the college money alone...it must be coupled with a measure of patriotism and love of country, but the military offers people advancement. What's wrong with that?

By the way, I post at California Conservative as well. I enjoy your posts!

ST, do you listen to Hugh live? KRLA am is live on the web if you don't live in radio range of one of Hugh's syndicated stations.
