A Congressional Dem who makes sense

Posted by: ST on November 29, 2005 at 1:07 am

I’m beginning to think Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-CT) is about the only Democratic Senator left with any common sense as it relates to Iraq:

I have just returned from my fourth trip to Iraq in the past 17 months and can report real progress there. More work needs to be done, of course, but the Iraqi people are in reach of a watershed transformation from the primitive, killing tyranny of Saddam to modern, self-governing, self-securing nationhood–unless the great American military that has given them and us this unexpected opportunity is prematurely withdrawn.
Progress is visible and practical. In the Kurdish North, there is continuing security and growing prosperity. The primarily Shiite South remains largely free of terrorism, receives much more electric power and other public services than it did under Saddam, and is experiencing greater economic activity. The Sunni triangle, geographically defined by Baghdad to the east, Tikrit to the north and Ramadi to the west, is where most of the terrorist enemy attacks occur. And yet here, too, there is progress.

There are many more cars on the streets, satellite television dishes on the roofs, and literally millions more cell phones in Iraqi hands than before. All of that says the Iraqi economy is growing. And Sunni candidates are actively campaigning for seats in the National Assembly. People are working their way toward a functioning society and economy in the midst of a very brutal, inhumane, sustained terrorist war against the civilian population and the Iraqi and American military there to protect it.

It is a war between 27 million and 10,000; 27 million Iraqis who want to live lives of freedom, opportunity and prosperity and roughly 10,000 terrorists who are either Saddam revanchists, Iraqi Islamic extremists or al Qaeda foreign fighters who know their wretched causes will be set back if Iraq becomes free and modern. The terrorists are intent on stopping this by instigating a civil war to produce the chaos that will allow Iraq to replace Afghanistan as the base for their fanatical war-making. We are fighting on the side of the 27 million because the outcome of this war is critically important to the security and freedom of America. If the terrorists win, they will be emboldened to strike us directly again and to further undermine the growing stability and progress in the Middle East, which has long been a major American national and economic security priority.

Read the whole thing. Mr. Lieberman manages to put the war in Iraq in the proper perspective that his fellow Democrats in Congress, many of whom are are now playing politics with the Iraq war in the most shameful of ways, cannot – or will not.

Mr. Lieberman is probably the only Democrat that I could vote for in good conscience… :???:

  2. NC Cop says:

Wow, that is impressive! This Senator is racking up some points in my book.

  3. Baklava says:

He’s a little fuzzy on how economics work but at least he doesn’t go the Dick Durbin approach of attacking others with false accusations. He’s a solid guy.

  4. Pam says:

    I will second that!

  5. Lokki says:

I liked Lieberman back when he was in the Democratic Primaries. I wasn’t totally sold on Bush and would have considered a solid alternative like Lieberman, even if he was somewhat to the left of my personal tastes.

However, the Democratic Party pretty much saw that he vanished without a splash last time around. Then they selected Kerry, who was no choice at all.

I would still consider Lieberman in 2008, but the last election made it obvious that he doesn’t have a chance with the formal Democratic Party machine.

Let’s see, if I can channel our resident Moonbat steve:

well, lieberman is a jew so that means he’s a leader of the warmongering zionists, so it’s no surprise he is in favor of murdering iraqi children. peace

    How’s that?

Lieberman is right now about the ONLY Democrat who I have any respect left for, and I’d have more respect if he switched parties to where he belongs, he’s more of a Republican than most of the RINOs are. He is a mature, well reasoned politician who still manages to maintain some semblance of dignity and respect. So, of course, his presidential run was dead from the start, and he was elminated early.

Still and all, he’s an impressively moderate and well thought out voice in the wilderness that’s become the Democratic party.

  7. PCD says:

I’ll tell you why I can not in good conscience support Lieberman at all. Back in the 80s I lived in Connecticut. The sitting Democrat Gov., O’Neill, was challenged in the primaries by a popular Democrat Congressman, Toby Moffett. CT has peculiar election laws. Moffett needed to win the elections in Waterbury, Hartford, and New Haven to force a Democrat primary. One of O’Neill’s aides stuffed the ballot box with 46 O’Neill votes in Waterbury enabling O’Neill to win Waterbury and avoid the primary. O’Neill wasn’t too smart and told the press before the election night was over that the press was wrong and that he won Waterbury. Immediately everyone knew the ballot box had been stuffed, but in CT there was a 3 day limit to bring charges to enable ovturning the election results. Lieberman as the state attorney general waited out the 3 days before charging the O’Neill aide with 46 counts of vote fraud. Lieberman won the case and the aide served 30 days in jail. The aide went on to assault the woman he lived with upon release from jail.

During the 3 day statute of limitations period, Lieberman gave an interview on WTXX TV, CH. 20, in Waterbury concerning the case. Lieberman said he had no evidence to go to court with at that time and then grinned like the Cheshire cat.

To me, Lieberman will always be a Democrat bag man who will sell out to the party at a moment’s notice as he did as CT AG, and then to be Gore’s running mate.

  8. Perhaps so, PCD, but I think he’s been pretty solid on the Iraq issue.

  9. steve says:

Lieberman is a pro-Zionist neo-con who refuses to denounce the use of violence(war) as a tool for change. He is a social liberal and an enviornmentalist. Because of his pro-violence stand most Democrats dispise him as they do Biden,Clinton and some others. He was a Trotskyite in the 60′s. Peace

  10. PCD says:

steve, Lieberman may be many things, but he’s not a neo-con. You just demonstrated how far out on the wacko left you are steve.

  11. Baklava says:

    Steve wrote, “Lieberman is a pro-Zionist neo-con…”

    1) What are the criteria for you to label someone pro-Zionist neo-con?
    2) Is that criteria good or bad qualities and why are they good or bad qualities?

Steve wrote, “Because of his pro-violence stand…”

    1) What statement of Lieberman’s leads you to say he has a “pro-violence stand”.
    2) Has every president in America’s history had a “pro-violence stand” according to your criteria?
    3) If not, what differentiates the other presidents as not being “pro-violence” in your mind?

Peace be to the strong who can overcome violent thugs if need be.

  12. steve says:

Pro-Zionist is someone who supports the Zionist agenda. Neo-con is someone of the Henry Jackson side of the Demcratic Party. A hawk or pro-war person thus, a warmonger. A Trotskyite is a person who believes that revolution is better than evolution given certian circumstances–the war in Iraq as example. Peace

  13. Lorica says:

Ohhhh Ohhhh Baklava I can answer the Pro-Zionist part. Ummmmm a Pro-Zionist is someone who loves present day Israel. Which, when you put a moment of thought to it, actually makes sense since Lieberman is Jewish.

Here is yet another example of leftist lunacy. But it does bring a chuckle to all who read it. Thanks Steve – Lorica

  14. Severian says:

A pro-zionist is someone who supports the Zionist agenda. Wow, how insightful and deep! Mastered circular reasoning did you?

Remind me to never buy a dictionary that used steve for an editor.

  15. Baklava says:

Steve, what is the Zionist agenda? To survive or something else?

  16. steve says:

Lot’s of Zionists on this thread. Are there any Wahhabists or Opus Dei? I dislike militancy, violence and war. Further, I believe that Peace is the only answer. Israel has every right to self-determination as do the Palestinians and Jerusalem should be an international city controlled by Jews, Christian and Moslems. Peace

  17. steve, your anti-Zionists rants are becoming tiring … ever think of picking up a new hobby?

  18. Ryan says:

I think someone in here has been hitting the bong fairly hard today.

  19. Lorica says:

There is only one right and his name is Steve??? Ohhh no sorry had my Bible upside down. It’s Jesus.

  20. - Headlines you won’t see in the NYT: part #9754…

    - “Lieberman: Iraq going really well. Bush plan on track”

    - At this point we can sit back and enjoy the monumental mental meltdown this should cause the already badly “fragged” Demon-crats….

    - I can hear all the lefties trying to twist this one. Probably something like…”We didn’t say Bush had actually lost the war. We said he was losing it. We didn’t say he doesn’t have a plan. We said he needs to update his plan to include giving information to the freedom fighters so they can step in after we pull our troops out too soon and help them establish a new Islamofascist state. Joe is just talking about the week he was there. Otherwise its a quagmire. Oh…. and I couldn’t make the booksigning because I had the flu….trully….well I did….erm….I only said I THOUGHT it was the spleen….Ok…. so you guys didn’t THINK it was the spleen…gaawwwd”

    - Bang

  21. Baklava says:

    I think he’s 16.

  22. Lokki says:

Steve’s comment about peace being the solution is right of course… but it reminds me of the old, old, line:

“…The lion shall lie down with the lamb idea works just fine, as long as you remember to add fresh lambs now and again.”

Steve- we don’t live in a perfect world. You might find the Palestinian Gaza election situation educational in this regard.

Another example of trying the peaceful option and the outcome is Jimmy Carter’s experience in Iran trying to free our hostages who were held for more than a year.

To make it simple for you: You can’t be reasonable with someone who doesn’t want to be reasonable.

  23. Baklava says:

… and evil exists. You either die from it or confront it.

Utopia isn’t possible, police have to exist, a military is necessary…

My 9 year old daughter has this common sense.
