I won’t be liveblogging it (putting together a TV stand tonight) but I am going to be watching it. Michelle Malkin has a list of bloggers who will be liveblogging it so if you can’t get to a TV, check out those bloggers or visit CSPAN for a video link.

Consider this an open thread to share your comments on the speech. I’ll be back once I get done putting this thing together (assuming I still have all my fingers … LOL).

Update I - 10:46 PM: Here’s the AP’s write up on the speech. The transcript of the President’s speech can be found here and if you’re interested, here’s the Democratic response - given by Virginia Governor Tim Kaine.

Update/Sidenote II - 10:51 PM: I finally got the TV stand put together \:d/

Update III - 10:55 PM: Blogger/punditry reax: Mark Steyn, Captain Ed, Glenn Reynolds, La Shawn Barber, California Conservative, AJ Strata, Austin Bay, Matt Margolis (who did a fantastic job liveblogging), Pardon My English, John Hawkins, Alex Nunez

Thanks to House Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-6th District -CA) . Via the AP:

Rep. Lynn Woolsey, D-Calif., is hosting Cindy Sheehan, whose vigil for her 24-year-old soldier son killed in Iraq, Casey, reinvigorated the anti-war movement.

“I’m proud that Cindy’s my guest tonight,” Woolsey said in an interview before the speech. “She has made a difference in the debate to bring our troops home from Iraq.”

Earlier Tuesday, Woolsey offered Sheehan a ticket to the speech - Gallery 5, seat 7, row A - as Sheehan attended an “alternative state of the union” press conference by CODEPINK, a group promoting the end of the Iraq war.

Isn’t that special?

Michelle Malkin blogs about what some of the more fanatical hate-Bushr’s around the country will be doing tonight to protest Bush’s speech.

Macsmind has a post up with his thoughts on the state of the Democratic party.

Update 10:37 PM: Cindy Sheehan was arrested and removed from the House galley prior to the President’s speech (see photos here). My question is this: why did Rep. Lynn Woolsey, who I would assume knows about all the stunts that Ms. Sheehan and her ’supporters’ have pulled in the past, invite her in the first place? If you’re in Rep. Woolsey’s district and would like to voice your opinion on her invitation of Cindy Sheehan to the SOTU, click here. We expect silly antics from radical anti-war types like Cindy Sheehan, but not Representatives of the US House. Shame on you, Rep. Woolsey.

Via the AP:

“In this decisive year, you and I will make choices that determine both the future and the character of our country. We will choose to act confidently in pursuing the enemies of freedom or retreat from our duties in the hope of an easier life. We will choose to build our prosperity by leading the world economy or shut ourselves off from trade and opportunity. In a complex and challenging time, the road of isolationism and protectionism may seem broad and inviting, yet it ends in danger and decline. The only way to protect our people, the only way to secure the peace, the only way to control our destiny is by our leadership. So the United States of America will continue to lead.”

* __

“Abroad, our nation is committed to an historic, long-term goal — we seek the end of tyranny in our world. The future security of America depends on it.”

* __

“In a time of testing, we cannot find security by abandoning our commitments and retreating within our borders. If we were to leave these vicious attackers alone, they would not leave us alone. They would simply move the battlefield to our own shores. … Ultimately, the only way to defeat the terrorists is to defeat their dark vision of hatred and fear by offering the hopeful alternative of political freedom and peaceful change.”

* __

“To overcome dangers in our world, we must also take the offensive by encouraging economic progress, fighting disease, and spreading hope in hopeless lands.”

* __

“Here at home, America also has a great opportunity: We will build the prosperity of our country by strengthening our economic leadership in the world. … The American economy is pre-eminent, but we cannot afford to be complacent. In a dynamic world economy, we are seeing new competitors like China and India.”

* __

“We must continue to lead the world in human talent and creativity. Our greatest advantage in the world has always been our educated, hardworking, ambitious people, and we are going to keep that edge.”

* __

“America is addicted to oil, which is often imported from unstable parts of the world. The best way to break this addiction is through technology.”

The SOTU will be broadcast live tonight at 9pm Eastern Time.

My friend and fellow blogger Brian at Iowa Voice is asking for some financial help. He lost his job last month, and the start date on his new job has been pushed back for another month. Bills are due, and he is unable to pay them - his electricity is due today and will likely be cut off in the next few days.

The best way to help Brian would be through his tip jar. Monies rec’d from that would get to him instantly. If you’re a blogger or have a business you’d like to place an ad for, Brian has several slots available for Blogads - he has some banner ad slots available as well.

He’s married with two young kids and could use any financial assistance we can give him.

Also, if you’re a blogger and are interested in guest blogging at Iowa Voice (in case he’s unable to blog for the next few days) contact Brian at: BrianATIowaVoiceDOTcom (changing the AT and DOT to the @ an “.” symbols).

Thanks in advance.

Update: I see there are some Blogads running on Brian’s site now. Excellent!

Matt Margolis is liveblogging the Alito confirmation vote. Interesting stuff going on this morning in the Senate.

Of course there are still some Democratic Senators voicing their, um, ‘displeasure’, at the Alito nomination, but in the end, he’s still expected to be confirmed.

Update I: I’m having trouble accessing that B4B link directly - if you’re having that same problem, try the link to the main page and you should be able to see the updates.

Update II: Just read via the AP that Alito has been confirmed 58-42. B4B (which I can access again) has the vote breakdown.

If another Justice retires before Bush’s 2nd term is over, as is being speculated, before it’s all said and done this court could be known as “the Bush court” … I’m sure that will drive a certain segment of our population absolutely batty ;)

Update III: Samuel Alito is sworn in as the 110th USSC Justice.

Perhaps America wasn’t interested in being prepped for a Hillary run after all?

(Hat tip: Rightwinged.com, who you should bookmark - good stuff there all the time)

Update 2/27/06: See the comments section for an update to this story - apparently the show has been put on “hiatus” with the last four episodes in the season expected to air in April. What I’ve read from a Google search tonight is that there is a worry from CIC fans that the show will indeed be cancelled and they are encouraging viewers to write ABC to show support.

Yesterday in the thread I started about Rep. J.D. Hayworth’s (R-AZ-5th district) marvelous opinion piece on multiculturalism and assimilation, the comments section of that post got sidetracked when a commenter attacked the motivations and character of those who agreed with Hayworth’s observations by saying such talk was usually only an attempt to pander to the ‘racist element’ within the Republican party. As proof of such ‘elements’, the commenter referenced a ’study’ which was reported by the Washington Post yesterday that supposedly linked political leanings to ‘hidden biases.’ The key part of the ’study’ in question:

Another study presented at the conference, which was in Palm Springs, Calif., explored relationships between racial bias and political affiliation by analyzing self-reported beliefs, voting patterns and the results of psychological tests that measure implicit attitudes — subtle stereotypes people hold about various groups.

That study found that supporters of President Bush and other conservatives had stronger self-admitted and implicit biases against blacks than liberals did.

My response to the citing of this ’study’ was:

If you think talk of assimiliation has to do with racism, you better think again, pal. Why is it everytime a Republican talks about anything having to do with race you guys start playing the race card? Answer: you need the votes. 92% of black people who voted for Democrats in the last election. You guys are already having a hard time winning elections as it is so anything you can do to keep the black vote stays on the table - including rampant race baiting where prominent Democrats like Charlie Rangel demagogue the hell out of racial issues while the party heads like Howard Dean let it pass without much, if any comment. Yet when a Republican even mentions the word black, there are calls from people like Howard Dean for “apologies” and the like and nine times out of ten Republicans will bend over backwards to make sure the black community knows they weren’t trying to be racist with whatever the offending comment might have been.

So don’t come here to this blog, and think you’ve got a leg up on anyone on the race issue because of a stupid survey - you might want to take a look at your own backyard before you start messing in someone else’s. Republicans have worked hard over the years to erase their image as a party of racists, yet the black Democrats in your party continue to get away with it because no one will call them on it.

Honest discussions in this country on racism and immigration are hard to have thanks to people like you, who want to perpetuate the myth that the Republican party is full of little more than Sheets Byrd types. Get a clue!

The whole discussion on assimilation was sidetracked by the discussion of racism in each party by that point (as of this writing, there are 86 comments in that thread on the issue), and I had planned on doing a full post about that ’study’ this morning as a followup - until I read the post Dafydd at Big Lizards wrote about this ’study.’ He’s dissected it brilliantly - I mean, just demolished it. Consider that post a must-read.

Oh, and about the scientists who conducted this ’study’? They have their own political biases which the Washington Post left out (mistakenly I’m sure :> ). Michelle Malkin has the breakdown of their political contributions. Hint: they contributed to Democrats.

Surprise surprise.

And Iran’s response is that this referral means that diplomacy is over. Via the AP:

Iran struck back Tuesday at the Big Five’s decision to refer the country’s nuclear file to the Security Council, saying the move has no legal justification and would be the end of diplomacy.

At a London meeting that lasted into the early hours of Tuesday, envoys of the United States, Britain, China, France and Russia agreed to recommend that the International Atomic Energy Agency report Iran to the U.N. Security Council.

They also decided the Security Council should wait until March to take up Iran’s nuclear file after a formal report on Tehran’s activities from the U.N. agency, which meets Thursday in Vienna.

“Reporting Iran’s dossier to the U.N. Security Council will be unconstructive and the end of diplomacy,” said Iran’s leading nuclear negotiator, Ali Larijani. State television quoted him as sayiny Iran still believes the issue can be resolved peacefully.

Translation: As long as the “Big Five” go along with what Iran wants, the issue can be ‘resolved peacefully.’

Con Coughlin has an article this morning in the UK Telegraph that Iran has set up secret teams to infiltrate the IAEA.

I’m waiting for the usual suspects to blame this all on the President.

Looks like the Doctor of Disology is in a bit of a pickle with other leaders in the Democratic party:

Democratic leaders on Capitol Hill are privately bristling over Howard Dean’s management of the Democratic National Committee and have made those sentiments clear after new fundraising numbers showed he has spent nearly all the committee’s cash and has little left to support their efforts to gain seats this cycle, ROLL CALL reports.

Congressional leaders were furious last week when they learned the DNC has just $5.5 million in the bank, compared to the Republican National Committee’s $34 million.

Senate and House Minority Leaders Harry Reid (Nev.) and Nancy Pelosi (Calif.), along with the Senate and House campaign committee chairmen Charles Schumer (N.Y.) and Rahm Emanuel (Ill.), have made their concerns — directly or indirectly — known to Dean, claims the paper.

Emanuel was particularly upset last week upon seeing the latest DNC numbers.

“A lot of people are scratching their heads as to what’s going on,” said one senior Democratic aide.

Another Democratic source familiar with the party fundraising apparatus said there is “obvious displeasure” among the leaders.

Here’s the Roll Call link (paid reg. req.) (I rec’d the Roll Call story earlier in today in email from a friend but hadn’t gotten around to blogging it yet).

In actuality, there’s more Dems should be upset with Dean about than just this, but it’s a start.
