Well, duh, Baklava. Facts are meaningless social constructs within the patriarchiacal narrative. Or something. Not really sure.

But facts mean nothing next to feelings. Facts are only for people who do not sufficiently care. There are things you know to be true regardless of what some ridiculous bit of so called “reality” might suggest (I wish there was an emoticon for air quotes so you could tell them from real ones). And the truth is that Smirkychimp W. McHitlerburton is evil, I tell you! Eeeeeeevil! Don’t look at his face, he’ll kill you with his gaze!

In the U.S., mining employment generally declined through the late 1960s. In the early 1970s, however, with the Arab oil embargo (see Energy Supply, World: The Energy Crisis), coal reemerged as an important fuel. As production increased, so did employment—to more than 200,000 men and women in the early 1980s. By 1990, the coal mining employment dropped to 147,000 workers and by 2000 to 80,000.

Obviously, the number of employed miners decreased between 1990 and 2000, but if you look at Bizzy's chart you'll see that some years between 1990-2000 the number of miners killed actually went up, even as the number of miners employed was (obviously) descreasing. You guys will blame Bush for anything. Unreal.

That spirit, though, was not present earlier this year when the Bush administration proposed cutting the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) by $7 million. The administration defended the 6-percent reduction by noting the number of coal mines has been decreasing. Yet coal mining fatalities have gone up for three years in a row. There were 42 mining fatalities in 2001, 29 in 1998. In March, Senator Jay Rockefeller, a West Virginia Democrat, maintained the funding cut would cause a 25 percent reduction in the government’s mine-safety inspection workforce. As of March, 612 federal mine inspectors were responsible for enforcing safety regulations in 25 states, and there were signs the system has not been functioning well.
your statistics don’t show the decrease in the mining workforce overall. mining accidents per the amount of mining workers has gone up.

You’re darn right its Bush’s fault!

I haven’t been able to trust him, nor should you, since he killed that nice mr lincoln and set off the war that was not so civil!
Don’t get me started on his inability to account for his whereabouts on dec 7 ‘41.

I am not suprised.

The NYT has shown an all out offensive in the Bush “GOTCHA” game.

I have not known one man, one Republican President, can be the cause and blame for everything in the world, from mining accidents to Global Warming. But if the NYT has its say, it will pin everything and anything on President Bush.

It is sad to tell you the truth. To see how much a news agency/paper can fall in its hate of one man.
