Calling in sick today

Posted by: ST on May 1, 2006 at 11:50 am

(Scroll down for Monday Update)

I am “calling in sick today – am not feeling well and will be bedridden probably for the rest of the day (am composing this on my laptop).

I’ll explain more when I can about what’s wrong – in the meantime, please consider this an open thread.

Sat. Update: I’m doing much better today – thanks for the well wishes :) I’ve got some things to do this morning that I’ve gotten behind on from being sick on and off the last few days but – assuming I’m still feeling ok – I’ll be back to blogging later this afternoon or evening.

Monday Update: I am experiencing more health issues today. I had wanted to explain to everyone what I’m going through over the weekend but I wanted to forget about it rather than talk about it at the time.

The short version is that back in March on my first ER visit that month I was diagnosed with a what is called gastritis. To find out more about it, click here and make sure to follow the various links like the one to “signs and symptoms.” I had two ER visits in March and none, thankfully, in April but I did have a couple of flare ups in late April after my prescription to Prevacid ran out. I was prescribed something for nausea and something else for pain and have had to utilize both drugs quite a bit in the last week. I’ve scheduled a Dr. appt early this week to get a more thorough diagnosis and discuss more treatment options (I really should have scheduled an appt. sooner, but I had the housewarming to prep for and I was really wrapped up in that and stupidly put my health issues on the back burner). The link I provided tells you in most cases that gastritis is not serious, but I fear mine is. The pain is so intense when you are going through it that the only way you feel halfway decent is to lay down – and sometimes not even then. Right now I’m going through the symptom of eating but still feeling like I’m hungry afterwards. It’s an awful feeling. The usual feeling, though, that I have from it, is feeling like I have a thick rubber band squeezing my midsection like a vice. Anyone who has gone through it will know what I mean. I have done good about avoiding foods I am not supposed to eat, but now I am getting sick off of foods I CAN eat. So now I hate to eat.

Because I’m having to change my diet completely, and because I’m afraid to eat, I’m not getting enough to eat, which is leaving me with less energy. It is all I can do to get out of bed sometimes.

I hate feeling abnormal and hate the fact that this is keeping me from being able to do things I love to do – and even simple, everyday things. Right now, walking the stairs to my house is a chore. Simple things like brushing my teeth, when I’m going through the pain, require effort. I live for the days that I don’t feel the pain. I am saying all this not to start a pity party, but because I want you to know that the reason I’m not blogging much lately is because I haven’t had the energy to blog like I normally do. I’ll be missing a few days from work this week and will be absent from blogposting and emails for at least the next couple of days (I’ll check in to release moderated messages, though, when I can) while I try to rest, get treatment from my doctor, and hopefully be able to plan a course of action for the future to recover from this.

So for the time being, please continue to use this thread as an open thread. Thank you for the words of encouragement already posted in this thread and in email. I miss blogging and chit chatting with all of you, and hope to be back to myself VERY soon.

Hmmm: our esteemed blogmistress is taking of Grand Boicot, claiming that she’s sick!

I think it’s time we checked her green card!

    2. - Hmmmmm. Si’ hablah este’ confusiono. Any particular reason this “beaner out” was held on the “Glorious suppressed workers of the world” day, May 1st, given to us by our beloved Marxist leaders in the former USSR (CCCP for those of you that can read cyrillic). Probably just one of those wild assed coincidents that seem to plague the left unfairly.

      - Locally the crowds downtown managed to eat into the usual heavy flow of bag-people plying their trade along Broadway, resulting in a few shouting matches of “Hey f***head – git cher own f***ing corner, this ones mine”, and several million less toco’s sold to the illegals that scarf them down everyday. The touristo’s at Sea Port Village stood along the route and watched with the usual sort of zombie faces you see when the crowd around you suddenly realizes that they really have been at Disneyland for six straight days.

      - Someone mentioned the Policia along the border. They were nicely but firmly “redirecting” the mob of illegals trying to swarm across at San Ysidro, and take advantage of the confusion, austensibly to “join their feeelow eemmeegrints” in a show of solidad”.

      - Effects on community: One local gas station was closed, so I was forced to drive two more blocks and pay 20 cents less a gallon. Traffic was very much lighter, and I noticed not one “Broom truck” on the road which I’m usually obliged to follow for miles at 3 mph under the speed limit, watching like a hawk should any bumpers or tail pipes fall off.

      - All in all I don’t think this whole miss-guided campaign is going to get the results they want. As a side thought, I wonder how much social services money the state saved today. That, and the reduced traffic, would be enough to suggest we do this two or three days every week.

Ah, our wonderful CA government supporting all of this. It’s funny, considering that many hospitals in the LA area aren’t faring so well because of it. Then again, it’s pandering for votes.

ST—Had to put in my nutritional two cents. You most likely need to cleanse and maintain a vegan style diet for awhile. It’s not so much a particular food that hurts us as it is all the different foods we eat that we shouldn’t. It affects everyone in different ways, but the simplest explanation is, there’s only one disease–poor nutrition, and there’s only one cure–good nutrition. A bit simplistic but not by much. Check out totalhealthinstitute.com or innerlightinc.com/enterprise. (the second is a slight plug for a friend, but I use their stuff and the theory is more than sound.) Dietary lifestyle changes suck, but it really doesn’t take long to acclimate. Good luck, good health and God Bless.

    7. - One of the protesters asked me how I felt about the immigration issue. Calling on my command of hispanic I looked very thoughtfully for a moment and said:

“Su brindis está en el automoblis tronco con el armodillo”

(Your toast is in the car trunk with the armodillo)

      - I just left him standing there before he could ask anything else.

Bang: RE your 4/29 12:16 post, when the “reporter” was squawkin’ about having to watch Fox on the tube, Scott should’ve counseled the stringer to resume his previous position, whether it was sandy or stinky, it really wouldn’t matter. No one forces them to watch reality either, as evidenced by their “reporting ” skills.

BTW, Bang, were you the one that called in to Rush explaining how nice the driving was w/o the illegals on the roads? I wonder if the crimes fell off any, since the majority of criminals were all at the rally?

    9. sanity says:

As the Captian put it in a recent post, there is going to be more scrutiny put on illegals now that they have done this.

So far it appears that Chicago outdrew Los Angeles, where the protests closed down about a third of the small businesses in the area, according to the AP. However, in a story that will likely have immigration hardliners talking for days, the AP reports that twenty-five percent of the children in the Los Angeles School District failed to attend classes today. After all, LAUSD’s annual budget for its 746,000 students is over $13 billion, or about $17,000 per student. If the walkout caused 25% of the students to strike, that puts the annual educational cost for illegal immigrants at around $3.25 billion — just for Los Angeles.

      Link

Your going to see alot more comparison between how much is contributed and how much is given to illegals now since they wanted what they do put into the lime light.

I have no problem with LEGAL immigration, and went through the process with my wife who is Canadian, but why should they break the law and be GIVEN anything?

      *THREAD HIJACK WARNING*

Two things on my mind today.

      1. For “Uno de Mayo” I worked 14 hours on TWO different jobs. Lazy Americans my Six! Not only that, but Saturday I drove FOUR hours each way to see my father in the Wisconsin Veterans’ Home. I worked 11 hours on the TWO different jobs on Sunday, too. So I did my working and spending over the last 72 hours. Up yours, Illegal Aliens and No Borders supporters.

      2. I did some research on converting my ride to E85. I got around 30 MPG driving 72 MPH with 3 people in my Thunderbird on Saturday. I find that is against Federal Law for me to convert the car, and I could wind up in a Federal pokey for doing so.

I’d like O’Reilly and any other bloviator clammoring for more fuel efficient cars to talk to me about this. The Feds, Congress, and the “Watermelons” are the ones stopping us, not BIG OIL!

BTW, I think I can get 280 HP, 35 MPG highway and 20+ City if I were allowed to make my E85 and other “smog” modifications, AND HAVE A CLEANER BURNING CAR TO BOOT!!!

UP YOURS Fmr. Gaylord Nelson’s daughter for wanting even higher priced gas. Tell Fat old sot, Kennedy and Cranky Walter Chronkite to stop blocking a windmill farm in THEIR backyards. F***ing Hypocrites!!!

    11. steve says:

Big oil is a cartel and the price will be what the cartel members say it will be.The price has nothing to do with supply and demand or free markets. The sooner the USA stops using fossil fuels as it’s primary source of energy, the better off we will all be. Joe Biden and the Zionists from the New American Century have presented us with their latest war-plan and that is to divide Iraq into 3 sections. Only the Zionists, the Armageddonist Christian conservatives, neo-con ex-Trotskyites and Big oil could come up with such a stupid plan. But, Biden needs to do it because those are the same groups that McCain is pandering to. The USA needs to imediately re-establish full diplomatic relations with Iran. Peace

      Democrats must fight illegal immigration

After all, most economists – even redoubtable liberals like Paul Krugman — have concluded that the vast increase in low-skilled immigration over the last forty years has depressed the wages of low-skilled citizens. There is some debate about the magnitude of immigration’s effects on the labor market, but not much about the direction of that effect.

    13. andrew says:

      “Democrats must fight illegal immigration”

If you want to increase their wages, make them legal, and give them better union rights and employment lawyers.

Andrew laughingly said, “Exactly. Make them legal

You’re funny. OK. Tell them to go where they came from and then come back legally so that we know who is in this country. People who come here legally also have to give thousands of dollars to do so. Would like to see that too. People who come here legally are also screened. I’d like to see them go through that process also.

AGAIN. We are the most generous nation that allows MORE legal immigrants than all other nations combined and all you can say about illegal immigration is “make them legal”. It isn’t a smart retort and isn’t a very well thought out one. It’s a reply that shows very little knowledge about the issue but one that shows you are willing to play games.

dave, I’m not sure what you are talking about with the head gear but using a standard English retort does not address (deflects) my statement to you that: “We allow MORE “LEGAL” immigrants than all other countries combined so why then must we allow “illegal” immigration when national security is at stake? Do you not care about national security dave?

Why don’t you address things. You can tell me my English isn’t standard a hundred times and it will NEVER address the issue. :o

Correction of more disinformation from the left about Iraqi women. This from Betsy’s Page:

I keep hearing some people try to propagate the myth that the rights of women were better under Saddam than they are now. From Hillary Clinton to Howard Dean to the talking heads on TV, you’ll hear that argument. Today in the Wall Street Journal, Yasmine Rassan refutes this lie.
Much of the anti-war propagandists’ defense of Saddam as a champion of women’s rights rests on his willingness to allow women to vote (for him), drive cars, own property, get an education and work. What they choose to ignore, however, is the systematic rapes, torture, beheadings, honor killings, forced fertility programs, and declining literacy rates that also characterized Saddam’s regime. A few examples can only begin to illustrate the cruelty and suffering endured by thousands of Iraqi women.
One torture technique favored by Saddam’s henchman and his sons involved raping a detainee’s mother or sister in front of him until he talked. In Saddam’s torture chambers women, when not tortured and raped, spent years in dark jails. If lucky, their suckling children were allowed to be with them. In most cases, however, these children were considered a nuisance to be disposed of; mass graves currently being uncovered contain many corpses of children buried alive with their mothers.

During Saddam’s war with Iran, nearly an entire generation of Iraqi men were killed, injured or captured, leaving a dearth of men of military age in Iraqi society. As a result, Saddam launched “fertility campaigns” that forcibly administered fertility drugs to school girls as young as 10 in an effort to drive up the population rate.

After the Gulf War–particularly after crushing the Shiite and Kurdish uprisings of 1991–Saddam reverted to tribal and “Islamic” traditions as a means to consolidate power. Iraqi women paid the heaviest price for his new-found piety. Many women were removed from government jobs and were not allowed to travel without the permission of a male relative. Men were exempted from punishment for “honor” killings–killings carried out on female relatives who had supposedly “shamed” their family. An estimated 4,000 women died from honor killings in the ensuing years. By 2000, Iraqi women, once considered the most highly educated in the Middle East, had literacy levels of only 23%.

Taxes on Big Oil. Betsy’s Page has:

If you hear people jumping on the bandwagon to raise taxes on “big oil,” you can show this column by Jonathan Williams from the L.A. Times explaining how the oil companes are already taxed. Remember, when you tax more of something, you get less of it. Is that what we desire?
But lawmakers could benefit from a history lesson. The last time this country experimented with such a tax was the Crude Oil Windfall Profit Tax Act of 1980. According to a 1990 Congressional Research Service study, the tax depressed the domestic oil industry, increased foreign imports and raised only a tiny fraction of the revenue forecasted. It stunted domestic production of oil by 3% to 6% and created a surge in foreign imports, from 8% to 16%.

Politicians calling oil companies “greedy” is more than a little ironic. Tax Foundation studies have shown that state and federal treasuries profit handsomely from oil industry sales. The average American motorist pays taxes of 46 cents a gallon on gasoline, of which 18.4 cents a gallon goes to the federal government. States and localities pocket the rest.

The nation’s energy companies are already providing a “windfall” of taxes. According to Department of Energy data, from 1977 to 2004, federal and state governments extracted $397 billion by taxing the profits of the largest oil companies and an additional $1.1 trillion in taxes at the pump. In today’s dollars, that’s $2.2 trillion — enough to buy a Toyota Prius for every household in the nation.

In fact, oil companies have paid in taxes more than three times what they earned in profits during those 28 years.

As the oil industry brings in record profits, it also pays record taxes that average 39% worldwide, even after accounting for special deductions and credits. That compares with a 33% average tax rate for other industries.

I like this quote, “The growth is driven by entrepreneurs and large corporations, alike, taking advantage of policies and conditions that are conducive to growth. Americans are migrating to places that maximize freedom, economically, and otherwise

That is 100% correct Will… All of this windfall profits tax and this and that tax and extracting more from the rich tax helps people vote with their feet by moving to areas of the country that are more economically friendly. CA’s budget problems are due to this. Many “smart” rich people in CA have left. There are less doctors per person for this reason I believe.

Or you can just admit you are for less national security, slave labor and women being raped…. your choice.

The bottom 50% of the American wage earners got a 15% average wage increase in the last 25 years. The average salary has gone from $38,000, in 1979 to $43,700, in 2005. In the same 26 years the top 1% got a wage increase of 111.3%. Their average income has gone from $298,900 to $631,700. Clearly, wealth is being re-distributed upward which indicates increasing greed and corruption. 29. Baklava says:

NYTimes.com has an interesting article about how the Roberts Court (Supreme Court) is more deliberative and there is more room for argument.

      It contains:

When former Justice Sandra Day O’Connor was on the court, he recalled, she asked the first question so quickly and so predictably that there was little point in preparing an elegant opening argument. “Now you might get three or four minutes” without interruption, he said.

The question, of course, is how to explain the change. Even assuming that Justice O’Connor’s departure in January accounts for quieter opening moments, a different dynamic seems to prevail throughout entire arguments. With justices sitting back and allowing colleagues to ask follow-up questions, and with lawyers given an actual chance to answer, there is a new coherence and civility to the sessions.

What you saw in that report is that the bottom quintile stayed near the same but you didn’t see is that people move in and out of quintiles easy in this country as opposed to classist systems in other countries.
