The Dixie Chicks: What’s the big deal about patriotism?

The Chicks are still flaming mad about the treatment they received from other country music stars after comments Maines made to a British audience in March 2003 in which she stated she was ashamed the president of the US was from Texas:

The Chicks can’t hide their disgust at the lack of support they received from other country performers. “A lot of artists cashed in on being against what we said or what we stood for because that was promoting their career, which was a horrible thing to do,” says Robison.

“A lot of pandering started going on, and you’d see soldiers and the American flag in every video. It became a sickening display of ultra-patriotism.”

“Pandering”? Earth to Robison: Country music stars have always been among the first in the music biz to put their support behind our troops. And about that “ultra-patriotism”? Maines is quoted as saying:

“The entire country may disagree with me, but I don’t understand the necessity for patriotism,” Maines resumes, through gritted teeth. “Why do you have to be a patriot? About what? This land is our land? Why? You can like where you live and like your life, but as for loving the whole countryÒ€¦ I don’t see why people care about patriotism.”

Taking pride in your country and what it stands for? Bah! Who gives a fig!

Hat tip: Malkin, who posts photos that will likely nauseate Maines.

Update I: I like what Tammy Bruce has to say about the Chicks’ latest rant:

Ms. Maines exemplifies the Ugly American–someone who completely takes for granted the extraordinary lives the American idea has given to people like her. She noted “you can like where you live and like your life…” but like a classic MalNar simply can’t see beyond herself.

I would suggest she move to Syria or North Korea or Mexico, and see exactly how much she’d like her life in those pits. Perhaps she could also make a short visit to one of our citizen swearing-in ceremonies and chat with those people who have braved all to become American citizens. Those are people who, unlike Ms. Maines, understand the importance of joy of freedom, have fought to live it, and know that it is only in America where dreams come true.

Bang on.
