For the record, Tom, I have always opposed the idea of fertility techniques that result in “extra” embryos being frozen or destroyed. I don’t feel that the desire to experience pregnancy or the desire to continue the family line, is more important than the lives being created and warehoused or extinguished. It always sounded way too selfish to me. Thus, I am consistent in my position regarding embryonice stem cell research. I oppose both.

Who can help me out with the logic of banning embryonic research funding based on moral grounds?

If it is immoral to ban this ‘potential life’ to death by research, then why is isn’t it also immoral to allow embryos to be created and frozen in the first place? Shouldn’t all who oppose embryonic research funding on moral grounds also be calling for a ban to embryonic harvesting? Is it OK to create, then exterminate potential life just because you can’t have children via traditonal methods?

Perhaps better to explain the incidence of cancerous tumor growth in Embryonic Stem Cells that hasn’t occurred in Adult Stem Cells. Embryonic Stem Cells are not needed, and the push for them is simply another way to expand the definition of “Acceptable”.

The veto should stand. And who gives a rat’s patootie about what China is willing to do? They also employ slave labor, use their prisoners as body farms, and are intransigent on so many international issues.

I agree that this was a good veto but I think the moral argument, good as it is, isn’t the best argument to make. Liberals will never listen to moral arguments anyway. The better argument is that fetal stem cell research simply isn’t a good investment. If it was there would be tons of private money in it and there isn’t. I posted about this yesterday on my blog (which may or may not be up because of a hosting transfer).

Adult stem cell research has paid handsome dividends already and leads to more treatments every day. Fetal stem cell research, on the other hand, has lead to nothing but empty promises, in spite of years of privately funded research. So the private money follows adult stem cell research. Federal dollars should as well.

Read this for an aspect you may not know about, note the author. All the funding, research, breakthoughs and life-saving techniques will take place over in godless, morally-bankrupt China and all of our scientists will be over there, too, driving around in Escalades and sipping Chinese cappuccinos, creating a super race of Chinese warrior sex machines, while we here in the USA will be in some kind of Dark Ages, surrounded by leprous, feeble-minded, obese, book-burning, wheelchair-bound Crusaders For Christ. Alone with our stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction.

And to point out the facts, despite the MSM and Democrats/Leftists saying Bush is banning research, this does nothing of the kind. There is absolutely NO, repeat, NO ban on embryonic stem cell research, none nada zip. It’s just the federal government is not going to fund it. Of course, this runs afoul of the typical liberal belief that only the government can do anything, heaven forbid private industry pick up the tab, everything good comes from government don’t you know.

If embryonic stem cells were really that promising, private biotech and pharmaceutical firms would be falling all overthemselves to throw money at it hand over fist. Most things are the proper provence of private industry and such, not of government, and this is no different.

All of this is outside the greater ethical considerations of whether or not it’s moral to destroy human embryos. Plenty of reasons to not support regardless of the ethics involved.

Yet another reason we need to clear out some of the more moderate Repubs from Congress. This was a good veto. What happens when they run out of “frozen embryos”?? Private Companies can’t even show any ground breaking evidence that this will create anything helpful. But there are 175 clinical trials on adult stem cells, or umbilical cord blood. Congress needs to walk around their constituents abit, maybe they would realize what is in the NYT or Wash Post isn’t reality. – Lorica

Bush is obviously determined to radically expand the power of he Executive branch at the expense of the Legislative brance, as can be proven by the fact that he’s only vetoed one piece of legislature in 6 years!

I’m glad he vetoed it. By my reading, abortion clinics would have been able to claim federal funding under the bill, since they’d be supplying “research material.” I don’t want any more of my tax dollars supporting that than already do.
