Ah, Best Buy, Worst Service. Other than quick grab and go runs for the odd piece of computer hardware I need in a hurry, I avoid them like the plague. Anything major, I go elsewhere, to a reputable dealer who stands behind their stuff. Best Buy is almost as bad as Circuit Chity.

I’ve had mixed results with Dell. Some of the bottom end desktops a year or two ago were terrible, bad reliability, non-expandable, etc. And their laptops a few years ago were so bad they lost the company I worked with then as a customer completely. I’ve had excellent results with Gateways though, I’ve had 5 Gateway laptops and all still work.

But it’s really a crap shoot. I can’t think of any computer maker who’s computers are bad all the time, it depends on each particular design, and each company will have certain machines that turn out to be basket cases and certain ones that last forever. Since the companies, like Dell, Gateway, etc. seldom actually design and build their own products, you’re at the mercy of whatever designer and component maker got picked for that particular product or production run. One bad run of motherboards (what failed in the Dell laptops I mentioned) will trash the reputation of an entire line of product, whereas the next production run of them may be fine.

So basically, buy the one you like based on features, price, and warranty and how much luck you’ve had with the company, it’s a crap shoot like I said, more often than not the product will be fine. In general, stay away from the cheapest desktops, they often, in order to keep the price down, do things in the design that are not flexible or smart, such as going with all in one motherboards that have sound, video, etc. all on them. Hard to expand, and these seem to have the most designed in anomalies or problems. Higher end machines that use cards for all these functions are better, if you don’t like the card they use, you can always change it for minimal money.

Dell should be fine if that’s what floats your boat ST! Going with a desktop powerhouse or a sexy light laptop?

The Dell box I don’t have a problem with. Dell printers, Dell marketing, and Dell practices with their consumables, I do have a big problem with.

I may just go back to building my own PCs because I’d put a pox on Best Buy, too.

I have had 2 Dells and my next system will be a Dell. I have had no problems with them at all and my previous Dell I have had for over 5 years now, it still runs great. The new Dell I have had coming up on 3 years, and I don’t see replacing it for another year and a half maybe longer. It is doing wonderful. – Lorica

To each his own, PCD – I’ve got a Dell desktop that I’ve had for nearly three years and a Dell laptop that I’ve had for almost a year and a half and I’ve had little to no problems with them. Contrast that with the troubles I’ve had in the past with both Compaq and Gateway, and I’d rather stick with the one I’ve had the least amount of problems with.
