Increasingly, the NYT staffers write stories that they hope will become one of the 10 most e-mailed stories of the day. They are written not to inform, but to surprise--i.e., to encourage readers to forward the stories to people on their mailing lists. The more the stories are forwarded, the more they are read, which improves the NYT's web stats, which, or so Mr. Sulzberger hopes, will bring in more adverts.

It is also encouraging that the staffers will now be better trained in how to analyze stats. One would have thought that somebody assigned to do a story involving the sentence would have had some background in the topic
in the first place.

Yet, even Calame's response is less than encouraging. The "tempered perspective" to which he referred still assumes it's closer than it is if you consider that girls from 16-19 aren't necessarily even considering whether or not to marry when they haven't even finished school yet. And of course, let's not forget what eliminating the widows would do to the stats. But as ST said, it wouldn't fit their agenda quite as well.

And from the "the rest of the MSM breathlessly ran with..." dept., a recent Cynthia Tucker column began with this very "study" as if it was now a fact. It kicked off her "the times are a-changin'" angle to pitch for changes in legislation regarding abortion and contraception. I wish I knew how to find and link to it. Her stuff is the stuff of lib fantasy.
