Duke, It is just plain mean to say their lives were wasted.

And to me the issue isn't about the past it's about trying to make good decisions for the future.

Can you say that you don't think there will be a humanitarian crisis if we pull out of Iraq now? There are Middle East and international affairs experts who do believe there will be a humanitarian crisis if we pull out. It would be highly irresponsible if we pull out given the carnage that would ensue. Just like when we pulled out of Vietnam and 3 million Cambodians died so will the people of Iraq.

We aren't speaking past each other but more or less we are on different planes of perspective. You want somebody to come to your plane and engage you but it isn't possible for us because you are coming from an entirely different premise.

If you try to move forward to today you will be able to let go of the past. The 4 year old decision to go to war was made and makes your 2nd paragraph irrelevant. We are there and what would happen if we pull out. We removed the Iraqi government and just like when we did that to Japan and Germany in WW2 we are working responsibly to set forth the best future we can for the region and the world because it matters and preventing another humanitarian crisis matters...

OK, quickly, how many people think the Vietnam War was a waste of American soldiers' lives? That war was long, full of heartache on both sides, and without debate, lead to a stalemate. Can anyone give good reasons why those soldiers' deaths lead to the end of the cold war (and I really want an answer, not as a anti-war pacifist- which, I am not- but as one wanting an honest account of history)?

Saddam's regime was an affront to any moral belief in just government. But the reasons "we" entered this war were false. Saddam did not have WMD's, he did not collude with our enemies on 9/11 and we did not engage him in an effort for nation building.

If our goal is to mold the world in our image- a democracy with the greatest and brightest people among its citizens, working to the greater good of humanity- so be it. I'll sign up... Oh, wait I did. But this is not what we have done. We are no safer. I have no more peace of mind when I sleep. I fear no less for our safety. I fear no less for our children and my family.

I have worked along side the faithful doctors, nurses, medics, and health care specialists that treat the men and women injured because of this war. Their pain- the soldiers and their doctors, is real. The families of the men and women lost in combat are real. I feel no safer because of our political decisions to topple an evil man.

There is also good evidence to feel less secure.

So, when a man stands in front of thousands and says that American lives were wasted because of this absurd war, it makes me wonder; Are we are a maker of nations, or are we the henchmen of our own demons?

I guess my post wasn't stated "quickly" but I would like honest engagement on what I have said.

I don't believe these speeches are off the cuff either.

They have speech writers, and they review these things and as 'attentive' as he is, I am sure he gives approval to each speech before he practices and gives it.

This, I bet, was hardly a surprise and wrong as soon as he said it.

I might believe it if this was off the cuff, giving a speech that you are making up on the spot....but I have yet to see a politican do just that. Especially when it is something as important as a presidential campaign.
