GWR let’s not forget the MSM’s incompetance trying to show that the folk in NO were savages. How many dead were suppose to be in the Superdome?? Wasn’t it suppose to be 600?? But in all actuality it was 5 in the dome and 1 body was pulled in from the outside. Why isn’t the MSM apolgizing for the chaos their lazy reporting caused?? Yet we are suppose to take their word on everything else they report on. I hate the news media in this country. I’m from N.O. and I’d love to go back but In some respects Nagin is right. Instead of landlords trying to work with people they’re raising rent 350% to recover monies lost. Same thing with utility companies (Entergy). I know profits are needed but not at the expense of poor people.
Also For people to return to N.O. jobs must be available which they are. My problem is the people that want to go back and want to help rebuild N.O have lost their jobs. I worked at Charity Hospital but when they called people back they overlooked my name but asked retired peoples to come back to work.
I for one want to go home and will when they are ready to welcome us with open arms and cheaper rents and utilities.

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin = incompetent

New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Warren J. Riley = incompetent

Orleans Parish D.A. Eddie Jordan = incompetent

Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco = incompetent

Those 4 individuals as well as FEMA and a whole host of other factors are the reasons why more people are leaving New Orleans than are returning. I regularly read some New Orleans blogs and the morale there is quite low and dropping even further. Some estimates are very pessimistic; some even predicting that the population may fall below 200,000 at some point. I, for one, wouldn’t be a bit surprised. It’s my favorite city to visit but this may be unrecoverable to former levels of population. And if another hurricane happens to hit anywhere near in the next season or so, then all bets are off…

Mayor Nagin has said so many goofy things since Katrina that most of us just roll our eyes and ignore him by now. Sad but true. Our last two Mayors (Bartholemy and Morial) were such corrupt disasters that Nagin is still, even post-Katrina, better liked than his predecessors. Compared to our recent Mayors, Nagin is relatively clean (I mean “clean” in the not overtly corrupt sense, not the Joe Biden “clean and articulate” sense). Much of the national media misread the Nagin-Landrieu dynamic in the last election. New Orleans has an open primary system where the primary lumps all candidates and parties together, and if nobody takes the majority of votes, the top two finishers meet in the runoff, regardless of party affiliation. In the primary, the conservative voters supported the two competent candidates, Ron Forman and Rob Couhig, but neither made the runoff. Landrieu is viewed as more liberal and “blacker” than Nagin, as BIll Clinton was called the nation’s first black President, so in the runoff, conservatives tended to vote for Nagin as the lesser of two evils. The national media and many bloggers see everything in traditional black-white terms and assumed that black voters carried a more liberal Nagin over Landrieu, when that was not the case.

“Ladies and gentlemen, what happened in New Orleans could happen anywhere” Nagin said at a dinner sponsored by the National Newspaper Publishers Association

I don’t think so. The mess in New Orleans required some very specific factors to be in play:

– Building a major waterfront city below sea level

– Inattention to substandard levees

– Incompetent municipal leadership (that means you, mayor)

– Incompetent state leadership (hello, Governor Blanco)
– Insufficient Federal response (great job, Brownie – not!)

I’ll grant the mayor that items 2 and 5 could probably happen elsewhere. Item 1 is probably unique. Items 3 and 4 require spectacularly inept elected officials, which the people of New Orleans brought on themselves.

Think about it – remembering how Rudy Giuliani handled the events of 9/11, if he were mayor of New Orleans, does anyone honestly think the Katrina response would have been bungled so badly?

It is my understanding that many black folk don’t want to go back to New Orleans. Several of them came to this area, and they have it so much better here, it is cheaper to live they were given nice places to stay, some found good paying jobs. Why on Earth would anyone give that up to return to the slums of NO?? – Lorica
