Indoctrination U. by David Horowitz

Want to fully understand the depths the left sinks to in order to control academic freedom on college campuses across the country? I do. That’s why in just a few minutes I’ll be ordering David Horowitz’s book titled Indoctrination U: The Left’s War Against Academic Freedom [1].

I’m a member of the American Compass book club, and they printed this excerpt from Horowitz’s book in the latest mailing I received:

“By the time I began speaking on campuses at the end of the Eighties, the academic community had become a zone of agitation in a way that would have been unthinkable to earlier generations … Causes like ‘social justice’ were even inscribed in the mission statements of entire departments. More often than not the campus leaders of these political causes were members of the faculty. In parallel with these developments, there was a visibly diminishing presence of conservatives on faculties, as older generations retired and conservative replacements were not hired.

These new attitudes translated into an institutional hostility to conservative speakers visiting campus. As one of them, I rarely arrived at a school without being identified in advance as a ‘controversial’ figure, which meant that I constituted a threat to the prejudices faculty had designated ‘politically correct.’ When I addressed three hundred students at the University of Chicago in 2006, for example, the school’s Student Activities Coordinator, who was present, never introduced me. Instead, she stepped to the microphone before I spoke to inform students that a ‘safe room’ was available for anyone who might need it – in other words, relief was at hand for anyone traumatized by what I might have to say.”

Here’s an interview [2] Bernard Chapin did with Horowitz about his book earlier this month.

Here are a few documented instances of liberal intolerance on college campuses:

There are many more where that came from.

The left complains loudly – daily – that the right are pro-crushing of dissent when it comes to alternative viewpoints. Never forget that some of the same people who make that faulty accusation today went to the very types of colleges where stifling of dissent was routine and encouraged and not just by other students. Let’s also not forget that an overwhelming majority of faculties at college campuses today are, in fact, liberal [11].

The left: open-minded and interested in the exchange of ideas? Sure – but only if you’re a like-minded individual.

More: Eugene Volokh [12] documents yet another instance of liberal intolerance on a college campus, this time at UCLA.

Update I: Speaking of Indoctrination U, Evan Coyne Maloney has made a documentary of the left’s antics on campus titled Indoctrinate U [13]. I’m not sure if his documentary is affiliated in any way with Horowitz’s book, but nevertheless the two are thinking on the same wavelength when it comes to the left’s aversion to academic freedom for conservatives. You can check out the trailer for the documentary and show your support for the film here [14]. The more people the “bigs” know want to see it, the stronger the possibility that it will get picked up at a theater near you. (Hat tip: Scott Johnson [15])

Update II: If the conflict between the left and right on college campuses interests you, bookmark Mike Adams’ Townhall.com page [16] – he routinely writes about instances of lefty intolerance towards dissenting views, as well as some of their other less than stellar moments.
