ST reader Sev brought this to our attention in the comments section of a prior post earlier this week:
During today’s hearing, Senator James Inhofe (R-OK), Ranking Member of the Environment and Public Works Committee, confronted Stephen Johnson, Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), with a threatening e-mail from a group of which EPA is currently a member. The e-mail threatens to “destroy” the career of a climate skeptic. Michael T. Eckhart, president of the environmental group the American Council on Renewable Energy (ACORE), wrote in an email on July 13, 2007 to Marlo Lewis, senior fellow at the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI):
“It is my intention to destroy your career as a liar. If you produce one more editorial against climate change, I will launch a campaign against your professional integrity. I will call you a liar and charlatan to the Harvard community of which you and I are members. I will call you out as a man who has been bought by Corporate America. Go ahead, guy. Take me on.”
In a July 16, Washington Times article, Eckhart confirmed that he did indeed write the email.
Scary, hm?
As an update to that story via Brit Hume’s Political Grapevine:
The head of the Environmental Protection Agency says he will investigate a threatening letter sent to a global warming skeptic by the head of a group advocating the use of renewable energy.
The Washington Times reports American Council on Renewable Energy President Michael Eckhart wrote to Competitive Enterprise Institute Senior Fellow Marlo Lewis — “It is my intention to destroy your career as a liar. If you produce one more editorial against climate change, I will launch a campaign against your professional integrity.”
The EPA is a member of ACORE — and so are several other government agencies. Eckhart told the Times he apologizes to all who were offended by his choice of words, and says the letter was a private communication in the context of what he called “personal combat and jousting.”
And threats and blackmail …

Ooops – G Monster, I just now noticed you had wanted to post your message about liberals silencing opposition in a couple of threads but I deleted the one you had here, thinking it was a duplicate. It’s really ok if you just post your message in one thread. Everyone will see it
No problem St. I’ve been posting on your wonderful blog so long, I feel like part of the furniture.
The Anchoress has a post on this as well.
It is really obnoxious.
Thuggery in the world of science is unfortunately nothing new, whether it’s Galileo being forced to recant his belief in the Copernican theory under threat of torture, or the outrage at the time at Louis Pasteur when he debunked spontaneous generation in favor of the germ theory. The man-made global warming zealots refuse to debate, and try to silence dissent by attacking the character of anyone with an opposing view.
If you needed any further proof that the Global Warming nonsense is not based on science, this is it. True science isn’t about threats and blackmail and adhering to the ‘orthodox’ view. It’s about rigorous experimentation, observation, analysis, and conclusions.
This isn’t about the science, it’s about the money. People who present evidence contradicting the GW hysteria threaten the funding of the GW zealots. If all those grants provided for the next Global Warming catastrophe study disappeared, these people would have to actually find productive employment.
If this is “science,” then so is Vinny and Guido kneecapping Tony the Rat for not paying up what he owes on the vig.
Always difficult to argue with, Vinny and Guido… peer review can be lethal.
To get an idea of how insane this issue is, check out the 1,752-word comment — which I later turned into a stand-alone post — received from Eckhart’s communications folks regarding a post on my blog about his spat/threat against Dr. Marlo Lewis.

Yawn… Liberals attacking conservatives motives… Anything new? JPE?
