In other words, ST is right – Shuler is not a far-left loon and the nutroots supported him only because they sensed a chance to get a Republican seat. That still hardly makes Kos the “center”. Shuler, maybe; Kos no.

But we liked his stances on labor, energy, the environment, education, and openness in government.

All of which the Kos-supported congress has done absolutely nothing about…except for openness in government, where they’ve gone in reverse. So do you plan to run challenges against, say, Reid, Pelosi, and the rest? Or is all this talk about “the center” just a smokescreen to blur the nutroots’ socialist, anti-American agenda?

And we loathed Congressman Charles Taylor.

Just Google Charles Taylor and you’ll see how much progressive netroots activity sprung up against The Lump and in favor of Heath Shuler.

So, yes, Kos’ statement about progressives supporting ‘muscular Democrats’ is true in the case of Heath Shuler. We did it in NC-11.

I think that corruption had something to do with the lost election, but I think the right went too far on immigration and that alienated some people in the center.

I do not have the link handy but I read recently that a record number of Americans are refusing to identify with either party.

Most Americans are center/right, in fact about 47% say they consider themselves moderates.

They want to see more border security but do support a guest worker program and a path to citizenship for some of the people already here.

They do not like abortion, do not want to pay for it, do want to know if their kids are trying to get abortions, but do not want an outright ban on abortion.

They are tired of the war, but want to win and do not want to see a surrender.

They do not want small government so much as they want effective and honest government.

etc.

This is really so easy to figure out that even Kos should be able to: If Americans were really in favor of those “progressive” policies, by now we’d have already seen the following happen with a veto-proof majority in Congress, on issues that are of paramount importance to the far left

Since the time of Watergate and Vietnam, the left has been exaggerating its influence and importance. The public’s attitude toward the Vietnam War turned, not because of the far left’s protests, but because Walter Cronkite, after a trip to the region, returned to broadcast that the war was unwinnable.

Nixon resigned, not because of left-wing protests, but because the center rejected him, and the right (recall Barry Goldwater’s visit to the White House to persuade Nixon to resign) abandoned him.

The left, with its chronic Attention Deficit Disorder, can’t focus long enough or hard enough to effect anything. (The current craze, environmentalism, just jumped the shark with the New York Times’s hysteria about bottled water. With that issue having dealt with, no doubt the left will soon turn its attention to something else.) Today’s left spews forth blather in a steady stream of words, but it fails to act on anything of substance. That a Stalinist like Kos holds any influence at all is a sign of how far the left’s influence has declined.

Imagine what FDR or Harry Truman would have thought of a jerk like that! Imagine what LBJ would think of a so-called Senate leader like Harry Reid.
