The volunteers that we have want to know they have other volunteers on their flank and at their back - not unwilling conscripts unable to finagle a deferment. The major reason Dems like Rangel and Murtha want a draft is to degrade the quality of the military, to make it harder to use. The military doesn’t want a draft, from the generals at the top to the NCOs and junior enlisted at the bottom. His answer should have been, "No there are no plans on a draft outside of that mandated by Jimmy Carter, when he reinstated registration". I read his bio, and he is a pretty smart guy, so I don't think he will be trapped in this situation again.
