This is why I refuse to donate to the Republican senate campaign committee, only to individual candidates. Last year Chafee had a solid conservative opponent in the GOP primary, but the Republican national campaign committee threw all its support and money behind Chafee. And had he not lost his seat, he’d have pulled a Jeffords and left the party anyway. Any money the national GOP sent his way was entirely wasted.

Agreed – and their excuse was that they wanted to ‘hold on’ to that Senate seat, which was silly if you think about it, because there really was little difference between Chafee and his Dem opponent, as Chafee almost never voted with Republicans, anyway.
