But, but, but, he’d already lived his life, and these two young men, obviously desperate and in need of money to feed their poor families, will now be unable to pursue their chosen profession and keep food on the table for their impoverished dependants.

Mr Pickett should have simply given them money, and then, since they were obviously lacking the real tools of their profession, a couple of handguns, too. If that left Mr Picket a bit short on cash, why he could have sold some of his remaining firearms to tide himself over.
