Legendary blues and jazz guitarist Jeff Healey has died, his publicist said Sunday. The Canadian musician had battled cancer his entire life. "It was something he fought with considerable bravery," his publicist, Richard Flohil, told Newsnet late Sunday. Healey, 41, had lost his eyesight to a rare form of the disease, Retinoblastoma, at the age of one. The musician had performed with such acclaimed guitar players as B. B. King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert Collins and George Harrison. His full name was Norman Jeffrey Healey and he passed away Sunday in the city of his birth, Toronto, at St. Joseph's Hospital. ... Healey leaves behind his wife, Cristie, 13-year-old daughter Rachel and three-year-old son Derek.

My take on the steroid hearings and Arlen Specter’s “Spygate” grandstanding is that they are both ridiculous wastes of time. I have, in the newspaper column I write for my local weekly (it’s not on the Internet, sorry), I have stated that steroids didn’t make Bonds, Clemens and McGwire into great players and that anyone who played a major portion of their career pre-1947 (Jackie Robinson’s breaking the color barrier which had been in effect for over 60 years) benefitted from not facing the likes of Satchel Paige (in his prime), Josh Gibson and so forth probably as much if not more than any steroid user. In other words, if there were fully integrated major leagues from 1880-1947 (and actually it wasn’t until the late 1950s that a few teams even had one black player), Babe Ruth wouldn’t have had 714 home runs, Ted Williams wouldn’t have had a .406 batting average (he had to play that last day in 1941 or the average would have been rounded down to .399 under the rules of the time, which he knew) and Cy Young wouldn’t have 511 wins. If the BBWAA “Pete Rose”’s Bonds and Clemens, disband them and the Baseball Hall Of Fame as well.
As for Specter and the NFL, the same man crying about “Spygate) is the same man who wrote the “Magic Bullet” theory in the Warren Commission Report. He probably still believes that one bullet could do that much damage to two people and come out almost intact.
