I saw an article on this once... but it was too long ago to recall exactly when. It's a famous evangelist show-trick that's become more and more common in political rallies. Before the 'main show' goes on, you encourage a lot of singing & hollering. In a dense crowd this uses a tremendous amount of oxygen. The end result is that the crowd feels a little 'high' from oxygen deprivation, not unlike the feeling of high elevation. This also has the unintended consequence of members 'fainting'. Although evangelists used to use this to demonstrate individuals 'taken by the power of the lord'. Apparently, fainting is very common at these over exuberant rallies.
