This is a deeply flawed bill, which does nothing more than offer retroactive immunity by another name. We strongly urge our colleagues to reject this so-called â€˜compromise’ legislation and oppose any efforts to consider this bill in its current form.

OMG is he talking about last years Immigration Reform bill??

The whole thing is a farce, and this bill should never even have been needed: the President’s Article II powers as Commander in Chief contain all the authority he needed to conduct wiretaps on suspected enemies overseas who were talking on the phone with people in the United States or via lines that crossed the US. Four separate federal appeals decisions and one FISA Court decision over the last 30 years all back this up. Bush should have fought it to the hilt as an unconstitutional encroachment by the Congress on the Executive’s powers, but Bush has never been good at fighting back. This whole sorry mess is just another example of why the modern Democrats are the direct descendants of the 19th century Copperheads.

(Why, yes. I do feel a bit strongly about this… )
