I remember that day vividly. I was driving to school and I heard the news about the planes and the chaos that followed. I thought of my son then Private Jonathan Graham, who was 17 and in the army, training to be a soldier. He had joined to get an education and was then thrown into a war. He turned 18 in the army away from his family and friends who loved him and missed him. Only now, we had a new fear to face with him, War. I remember his words in an e-mail to us about being sent to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom with the 82nd Airbourne Charlie company of the signal corps, he wrote, Mom and Dad, I am not going to tell you I am not afraid, I am terrified. But I know that we are going to war for the right reason. I am proud to serve my country and I would lay down my life to help preserve our freedom.
I have never been more proud of my son.
His younger brother, Brandon joined 5 years later and was injured in Iraq by an RPG into the house he and his squad were clearing. He is stateside now going through Radiation treatments for the brain cancer from being stationed at a power plant and surgeries to his arms for damage caused in the blast from the RPG.
I am just grateful to God that they are alive and now stateside. Freedom to me is a very rare and priceless jewel every person wants but few appreciate the aweful sacrifice paid to give it to us. I hope and pray that we never forget those who have been on the altar of sacrifice of freedom.
Just an army mother of two young veterans of 24 and 22.
