Buckley is too cute for words. There's no way one could credibly claim that his conservative principles have driven him to support Obama over McCain (q.v. Sullivan, Andrew). I can see a self identified conservative sitting it out because McCain isn't conservative enough, or one claiming that supporting Obama is a tactical choice because after four years the nation will come to its collective senses.

Both are supportable, if wrongheaded choices. But Buckley has obviously decided to elevate social standing, class, call it what you will, over principle. He's made it clear that Obama is one of "his" people, and McCain and most definitely Palin are not. In effect he has inverted his father's famous quip about preferring being governed by the first two thousand names in the Boston phone book than by the faculty of Harvard.

<blockquote>Paraphrasing Ronald Reagan's quote about the Democrats, Mr. Buckley added, "I haven't left the Republican Party. It left me."</blockquote> Ahhhhh nooooo, this is the same party I left the Democratic party for. It might be abit more left that I would like it, but it is pretty much the same. For someone who supports Barry, to now talk about how bad the Rep party is, only makes me think that they are: A) Still in teenage rebellion against there Father, or B) Was never really on board with conserative ideas before hand. Seriously, to go from defending McCain to supporting Obama is a pretty serious stretch. It really proves to me that there is a strong delusion, and it is finding a home in the ideals of those who are left of center. - Lorica

"...it's not about having the right to say something, but whether or not it's right to say it..." Amen, sister!! So many people have lost sight of that. It's all about shock value and not about substance. I am sick of it.

I just can't believe the way these people talk about Sarah Palin mostly. It's unbelievable. K Parker astounded me, as did Chris Buckley. In my opinion Obama and his wife both hate America, he got one house with the aid of a mob bank and the other with the aid of a convicted embezzler, he and his business partner spent millions indoctrinating school children in Chicago to hate America instead of teaching them anything, he negotiated with the Iraqi foreign minister to delay a troop redeployment agreement behind the government's back, and he instructed and is funding an organization which seems determined to tarnish every voter registration in the country. And I wouldn't talk about him like they do Palin. The Obama crowd likes to talk about "code words." The Palin comments add up to "poor white trash."

I don't wish him any hate mail either, but he's not to be taken seriously when he says the Republican party left him. Did the party just turn conservative? No, it has been at least since the time of Ronald Reagan. Reagan said that about the Democratic party because that party was once strong on defense and on traditional values, and then abandoned those values. The GOP hasn't changed. Buckley Jr.'s about face is similar to that of conservative Catholic Doug Kmiec, who shockingly endorsed Obama earlier this year. Neither has given a coherent reason, in spite of the volume of space they devoted to the subject.
