So what did they expect when Kathy Griffin did what she does best?

Thing is, it’s kind of difficult to put in the usual seven-second delay to allow the director to bleep an offensive word — or phrase, in this case — on a show designed to celebrate the precise moment of the New Year.

I admit to having liked Kathy Griffin when she was doing Suddenly Susan with Brooke Shields, but I haven’t seen any of her work since then.

  2. Much ado about nothing. Her comment was actually pretty funny, if not 100% original to her. Of course, it was vulgar, but that’s part of her schtick and it’s not that different than something you would hear in a comedy club pretty much anywhere. And it was made well after 1:00 a.m., when kids should have been in bed anyway, and grownups who are tuned in to a show featuring a comedian can be reasonably presumed to be able to handle this sort of remark. If your kid heard this by accident, why on earth did you let your kid stay up that late in the first place? If you are personally offended by edgy comedy, why on earth were you watching a live show featuring someone like this?

  3. In the central and mountain time zones, it was not bleeped out, TL, and it’s not unusual for parents to allow their kids to stay up late like they do to celebrate new years, especially when they’re over 10 and into their teens (how many times did we all stay up late as teens to ring the new year in?).

She was actually fairly nasty earlier in the evening, but didn’t say anything bleepable until the “d” word. Kathy Griffin is well-known in entertainment circles for off-color humor, and I’m frankly surprised that CNN would have taken a chance with her. She does what she always does. CNN should have known better. They simply dropped the ball (no pun intended).

As for me being “personally offended by edgy comedy” – it’s not my cup of tea, so I didn’t watch because I figured something like that would eventually happen anyway. But then again, this is about a kid being up at that hour and having to hear something you would normally only hear on channels you have to pay for. And what about adults who didn’t know much about her but who stayed up to watch CNN’s programming? Should we just deem this acceptable because everyone “should have known”?

Ohhh Sis it is all good…. You see only liberal nut jobs would watch CNN or Kathy Griffin anyway. I do find it humorous that a “lawyer” doesn’t understand the concept of “timezones” tho. =)) Like we just started using them this week or something. =)) Personally they should just fine Kathy 50K and CNN 250K and let it go at that. Maybe when CNN reports a loss of 249K for this year they might think twice. – Lorica

Griffin is such a lowlife. Who can forget her rousing speech at the Creative Emmy Awards:

“A lot of people come up here and thank Jesus for this award. I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus,” an exultant Griffin said, holding up her statuette. “Suck it, Jesus. This award is my god now.”

    You stay classy, Kathy.

There are real comedians, and then there are the Kathy Griffins. She’s not funny, so she has to do outrageous, ignorant, and moronic things like these to keep attention focused on herself, i.e. Rosanne Barr and Rosie O’donnel.

Well its CNN’s fault didnt they have her last year too? Ugh Hopefully they learned their lesson this time. I think it is so funny seeing Cooper Andersons face when she started yelling at some random guy.. He was like we need to go to commercial.. hahahahahaha CNN gets what it deserves!

  7. I know what timezones are, Lorica; I just hadn’t considered that issue when I offered my opinion. It’s a comment on a blog post, not a legal brief.

ST was quite diplomatic and polite when she pointed out something I’d overlooked, and she makes a valid counterpoint. Still, I stand by my opinion that this incident is not a big deal.

Well we’re not marching on Washington, T.L. we’re discussing it, that’s kinda what blogs are for, right?

  9. Marshall Art says:

The fact that some people, even some educated people, don’t see this as a big deal means to me that it is indeed a big deal. A good resolution for the coming year is for all to insist on more dignity and decorum in public situations. A bit more privately would help as well, but heaven forbid I dare insist anything regarding the precious private lives of others.

The sad fact is that deviancy has indeed been defined downward long ago that such antics are not a problem for too many today. Does that sound too prudish? Well I’m no prude, but I’ve come to feel that’s nothing of which to be proud. What it really means is a great lacking of maturity and self-control.

Without reading further this led me to believe I missed a live Al Franken appearance on New Year’s Eve.

There’s another thing no one else seems to care about any more: when these words are thrown about so casually, they are still just as offensive, but lose their power to surprise and shock. And there should be words that have the power to surprise and shock. What’s the point of using such language if it’s powerless?

It is good that you realize that there is more to this country than just the little area you live in T.L. And although you might not think it is a big thing, some of us still do. Infact I would be the majority of adults in the remainder of this country think it’s abit more than “Much ado about nothing”.

Honestly tho….Why ruin someone’s holiday celebration with this kind of foul mouthed tripe. Yet Kathy G. still wonders why she is on the “D” list and heading lower. How soon before she is just another forgotten Hollyweird hasbeen???

Trish hits on a problem too. As this sort of thing becomes more and more “much ado about nothing” to some, these buffoons are going to dig deeper and deeper into their depravity, and it’s just going to get worse and worse. Just like everything else liberals say is “nothing” i.e. abortion, sexuality, drugs, so forth and so on.

Defend it all you want, but the behavior is beneath myself, and I would venture to guess most Americans. And the longer liberals condone such behavior the worse it’s going to get. – Lorica
