The anniversary of Bill Buckley’s death

I’m a little late to the game on this one, but Febuary 27th was the anniversary of the death [1] of mega-conservative icon Bill Buckley.

As most of you will remember, late last year his son Christopher came out in support of Barack Obama [2], a move that sparked considerable discussion amongst various talking heads, bloggers, and their viewers/readers. These days, Buckley is sounding somewhat like David Brooks [3] on Obama, except Buckley’s worry [4] about Obama is more implied than expressly stated.

That said, Christopher Buckley wrote a very moving piece [5] on the week of the anniversary of his father’s death, and at a time when conservatives are battling for the heart and soul of the Republican party, and some are at war with each other [6], I thought that reading more about the life and times of the man many call the “godfather of conservatism” could do us all some good. Here’s the link again [5].

Make sure to keep a few Kleenex handy.

Last but not least, the famous Buckley vs. Chomsky debate from 1969. Here’s part 1:

Here’s the link [7] to the video of the second part of that debate.
