Leftist double standards, part 8,277,993

Jim Geraghty points to another example of lefty hypocrisy in terms of how several popular Dem columnists, comedians, and strategists – like one of the orchestrators of the latest Rush smears Paul Begala – refer to Rush Limbaugh as a “drug addict,” using it in the present tense in spite of the fact that he is now drug-free. Sometimes the descriptions, as you’ll see from Geraghty’s post, are worse than that.

This has become acceptable in our left-leaning culture when it comes to insulting the “favorite, likeable Democrat.” Now just imagine the outrage, on the other hand, had a prominent Republican strategist or columnist called Obama a “cokehead” or Ted Kennedy a “drunk.” Heck, even Democrats have gotten in trouble for mentioning Obama’s past troubles with drugs. When a Hillary Clinton campaign co-chair (Bill Shaheen – NH) brought up Obama’s past drug use, and later when another prominent supporter of hers – Charlotte Bobcats owner and BET founder Bob Johnson – did similary, there was an eruption of outrage in the usual corners. Shaheen actually ended up resigning from the campaign the next day and then-Senator Clinton called Obama and apologized personally. Johnson had to walk his comments back over the criticism he received.

Are there double standards at play in terms of how one side can refer to the other? As Gov. Palin would say, “You betcha.” There needs to be one standard applied to both sides on this issue. But I won’t hold my breath waiting for that to happen.

…. and then you wonder why it looks like a KKK or Nazi rally at Republican conferences. Nobody wants to go thru the treatment that Clarence Thomas went thru, and somewhat continues even now in certain circles, even the the man is a genius and truly an inspiration to his race. The left in this country will deploy any hate filled lie they can to keep conservatives from a public display of their beliefs, but yet we are the hate mongers. I don’t think so. So much of that is on their side and they project it onto us. Period. – Lorica

On this one, there are some problems. Health care professionals consider anyone who was a drug addict to still be a drug addict, as in someone who has quit cocaine or heroin or oxycontin would be right back to full addiction if he slipped up just once. Mr Limbaugh would be considered a present day drug addict by most health care professionals.

Of course, we know that that isn’t why our friends on the left keep mentioning this; they’re trying to whip up outrage or to mock the man or just plain demagogue the whole thing. But the definition of addiction actually does enable them to do so.

“Democrat” is synonymous with “hypocrite” and “liar”. Roget’s Thesaurus needs a quick update.

ST, Thanks for working Governor Palin into your summary. That was clever, and on point.

Another example, from today: Bush/Cheney were (and still are) thoroughly excoriated for meeting with representatives of the gas, oil and energy industries to determine energy policies for the administration, while today it was announced the Obama admin (headed by Joe “I don’t plagerize” Biden) there will be a meeting with major health industry stakeholders to determine health policies.

The difference? Bush/Cheney were Republicans, Obama/Biden are tinhorn wannabee gods, and the media would have a hard time excoriating a team they pushed so hard to elect.

And Lorica, you’re right – libs/donks do project their own faults onto their “enemies”. The fact that they regard their political/ideological adversaries as “enemies” says it all.

    SamHermanMD –well done!!
