I love it:
Mombasa, Kenya, April 12 — An American captain being held by Somali pirates was freed unharmed Sunday in an operation carried out by U.S. Navy Seals, U.S. military officials said. Three of the pirates were killed and the fourth was captured.
The captain, Richard Phillips, who had been held in a lifeboat adrift in the Indian Ocean since Wednesday, was initially taken aboard the Norfolk, Va.-based guided missile destroyer USS Bainbridge. He was later flown to the USS Boxer, where he received medical attention and phoned his family. The operation took place at 7:19 p.m. local time, the Navy said.
Vice Adm. William E Gortney, commander of U.S. Fifth Fleet, said U.S. military snipers opened fire on the pirates within seconds after an on-scene commander determined that Phillips’ life was in “imminent danger” because one of the pirates was aiming an AK-47 at the captain’s back. President Obama had issued a standing order that the military was to act if the captain’s life was in immediate danger, Gortney said. The U.S. military snipers were positioned aboard the Bainbridge, which was towing the 18-foot lifeboat holding three of the pirates and Phillips about 25 to 30 yards away. A fourth pirate was on board the Bainbridge as part of ongoing negotiations, Gortney said.
Gortney said U.S. Navy SEALs were involved in the rescue effort, but he did not know which snipers took the shots that killed the pirates. Phillips, who was tied up in the small lifeboat, was within feet of the pirates when they were shot. In addition to carrying AK-47s, the pirates were armed with small caliber pistols, he said.
Breitbart’s got a couple of video reports on what went down, and the reactions of the crew members of the Maersk who were anxious for their Captain to be rescued swiftly and safely.
Thankfully, prayers were answered, and he was. And a few pirates went down in the process.
All in a day’s work for the Navy SEALS! ![]()

Arrr…Them pirates be sent t’Davey Jones’s locker! Arrr…
(I’ve always wanted to say that…
)
I’ll give the president credit here since he had to order it. It’s the first thing he’s done that I can heartily agree with.
The best that I could determine (since I did watch the Pentagon press conference), the standing orders from Obama were that force could be used only if Phillips’ life were in “imminent danger”, and that those orders were issued twice to specific elements of the Navy. Somehow I doubt that three dead pirates was the outcome prefered by Obama.
Heck, if His Hollowness had had his choice he and the pirates would have had a ticker tape parade together down the streets of Mogadishu just to show the people there that “he’s for the little guy”.
And I wonder if it’ll ever occur to him that the reason it was successful was that those trained for murder know how, and when, to complete what they’ve been trained for.
Maybe it wouldn’t be such a good idea to shrink the military to powerlessness after all, ya think?
Agreed, Steve. Only an idiot would refuse a request to rescue the Captain if his life were threatened.
Sounds more like the Captain of the Navy vessel decided his life was threatened.
Regardless, the Captain is alive and safe, the bad guys are dead, although the ones still alive are vowing revenge.
So, are we CREATING terrorists with “Cowboy” diplomacy??
NC COP:
Bring it.
The best way to attack pirates is by striking their ports. We’ve had a plan ready for a while, someone (*cough!*PBO*cough!*), just needs to give the “go order.”
Lets put an AWACS up there and every time that they start shadowing a freighter send in a fighter to take the pirates ship out from over the horizon. Do that 2 or 3 times and they will stay home. Think about how much the insurance companies would save from not having to pay these terrorists.
Even better is an SR-71 but wait, a former president made us destroy them and the parts prints and molds. No way to get them back….
What the hell is “So, are we CREATING terrorists with “Cowboy” diplomacy?”
The only thing these thugs understand is force. If we cow tow to their demands they will only continue their acts of violence.
…high-fives and a proper salute to our SEALies!
Nobody does it better!
