Take heart, unborn babies: The pro-life movement is gaining ground

This is great news (via Memeo):

PRINCETON, NJ — A new Gallup Poll, conducted May 7-10, finds 51% of Americans calling themselves “pro-life” on the issue of abortion and 42% “pro-choice.” This is the first time a majority of U.S. adults have identified themselves as pro-life since Gallup began asking this question in 1995.

The May 2009 survey documents comparable changes in public views about the legality of abortion. In answer to a question providing three options for the extent to which abortion should be legal, about as many Americans now say the procedure should be illegal in all circumstances (23%) as say it should be legal under any circumstances (22%). This contrasts with the last four years, when Gallup found a strong tilt of public attitudes in favor of unrestricted abortion.

Gallup’s bottom line?

With the first pro-choice president in eight years already making changes to the nation’s policies on funding abortion overseas, expressing his support for the Freedom of Choice Act, and moving toward rescinding federal job protections for medical workers who refuse to participate in abortion procedures, Americans — and, in particular, Republicans — seem to be taking a step back from the pro-choice position. However, the retreat is evident among political moderates as well as conservatives.

It is possible that, through his abortion policies, Obama has pushed the public’s understanding of what it means to be “pro-choice” slightly to the left, politically. While Democrats may support that, as they generally support everything Obama is doing as president, it may be driving others in the opposite direction.

I know this is an issue a lot of people don’t like to talk about, due to its sensitive nature and the lack of either side being able to find common ground – and I’m guilty of that myself, but with us having one of the most – if not the most – abortion-friendly presidents in modern history now sitting in the big chair, the time to speak up on behalf of the unborn is now.

What is my goal in all this? To, as part of a sustained group effort, convince enough people that abortion is wrong so as to sway public opinion on the issue to the point that making it illegal – or at the very least returning the issue to the states – one day (and I know it will be a long way) down the road will be a mere formality.

Liberals claim they want abortion to be “safe,” “legal,” and “rare”, but women are having roughly 900,000 abortions a year. That’s down, thank goodness, from the numbers we saw for a couple of decades after the RvW SCOTUS ruling, but it’s still not good, and it is not “rare” – I don’t care what the population is. It’s time to address the fact that most abortions in this country are NOT done for health/life of the mother reasons or fetal defects – as liberals like to pretend they are – but instead are done so for convenience purposes. It’s time to question liberals on why they are in favor of a woman having “the right” to extinguish the life of an unborn baby whose tiny heartbeat you can see in ultrasounds as early as 5 weeks:

At week five, your baby is 1/17 of an inch long β€” about the size of the tip of a pen.

This week, your baby’s heart and circulatory system are taking shape. Your baby’s blood vessels will complete a circuit, and his or her heart will begin to beat. Although you won’t be able to hear it yet, the motion of your baby’s beating heart may be detected with an ultrasound exam.

If we don’t do our part to speak for the unborn, who will?
