President Obama said this week that his health care plan won’t cover illegal immigrants, but argued that’s all the more reason to legalize them and ensure they eventually do get coverage.
He also staked out a position that anyone in the country legally should be covered – a major break with the 1996 welfare reform bill, which limited most federal public assistance programs only to citizens and longtime immigrants.
“Even though I do not believe we can extend coverage to those who are here illegally, I also don’t simply believe we can simply ignore the fact that our immigration system is broken,” Mr. Obama said Wednesday evening in a speech to the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute. “That’s why I strongly support making sure folks who are here legally have access to affordable, quality health insurance under this plan, just like everybody else.
Mr. Obama added, “If anything, this debate underscores the necessity of passing comprehensive immigration reform and resolving the issue of 12 million undocumented people living and working in this country once and for all.”
Ed Morrissey, who has video of Obama’s remarks, responds:
In other words, not only should everyone pay for Americans to get health care, we should pay for health care for those who came here illegally. That’s going to be a winning argument in 2010, especially in Blue Dog districts! We’re going to bust the budget and infringe on your personal choices, and we’re going to make you pay for insurance for illegal immigrants!
If a Republican had run an ad making those charges in 2008, the media would have called it a “smear”. If comedians used it in their act, it would have been a joke about GOP paranoia. The joke, unfortunately, is on those who voted for the Blue Dogs because of their supposed conservatism, and on those who voted for Obama because of his supposed centrism.
I’m all for immigration reform – and yes I do realize that “reform” is in the eye of the beholder, and I certainly don’t trust this admin on any reform front – but I’m not for it as a means to providing healthcare for millions “former undocumented workers” who ten minutes before they became eligible for healthcare were illegal and not eligible.
I’m also still waiting for the answer no one in the administration has provided (not that I would believe them, anyway): Assuming ObamaCare passes, where are all the new doctors going to come from, both for the people who will jump on the ‘free’ healthcare bandwagon as well as for those who already have healthcare whose current physicians will be overwhelmed? If illegals are thrown into the mix by becoming “legal” that is going to put even more of an unsustainable crush on our entire medical system, making the costs skyrocket and the quality drop dramatically.
Really. Does anyone in this adminstration think about what they’re advocating before they go about trying to sell it? Or does it matter anymore, since they think they can pretty much get away with anything?

Unfreakinbelievable!!!!!!!!
Running out of constituencies there, Mr. Obama?
I guess there’s always room for more Democrats, especially after all the dead people are already registered.
RWR
Sorry Carol, after all this many months in office, nothing is unfreakinbelievable with this guy.
But it’s not important that their “solution” to the problem will create an even worse mess than we now have. What is important is that, in their intellectual and dope-clouded “solution” they “feel” they are doing good, and, despite all the cries of anguish from the recipients of their bountiful beneficence, they know they are right and the whiners don’t understand what’s good for them.
After all, common folks just don’t have the intellectual capacity to understand the real problems.
Health care has always been about getting 20 to 30 million illegals citenship anyways. Democrats now realized they may have to do it without socialized medicine, but once they get the millions of new voters that will be a formality anyways.
Let’s not forget that the more “rights” and privileges that can be given to illegal aliens, the smaller a step it will seem when Obama pushes for shame-nesty for them.
And this surprises any of us how, exactly?? Joe Wilson was right, but I suspect most of us knew that all along.
In the Honor Codes at the service acadamies, one of the things that is prohibited is “quibbling”. Quibbling is defined as saying something that is intended to mislead the listener, even if it is technically true. It is considered to be the same as lying.
This is a textbook case. Obama’s speech was designed to make us think that he would make sure no one who sneaks across the border would be covered. That’s a lie.
Wait till he legalizes all the Mexicans and suddenly realizes they are mostly pro-life Christians. TAKE THAT!
I believe that he feels that way but I am still somewhat shocked that he laid it out like that. What a brazen sob.
Illegals have a champion in Obama and he will remain that, even tho it is not popular with most Americans. He needs their votes badly next time around SEIU will turn them out in masses.
“where are all the new doctors going to come from”…see my post healthcare: the supply side, which sparked some intersting discussion, some of it by some pretty knowledgeable people.
Just as the Black people have been and are being used by Obama and his friends to gain power, the illegals will be used and then dumped.
When the ACORN tapes started coming out, I had a glimmer of hope that the bad guys would lose. My hope is dwindling and it’s the normal, everyday, hard-working Americans who are going to pay the heavy price for this crook.
This is understandable if you believe, as the Dimmocrats do, that illegals just somehow find themselves in this country, unwillingly, in a way that they had nothing to do with. They just materialized here, rather like those unfortunate souls who relate their tales of kidnapping by alien beings.
Since, in the Real World, they CHOSE to come here, they CHOSE to violate our laws, they CHOSE to stay, against our laws and desires, they can bloody well pay their own way.
Bill them for the hospital visits. Deport them. And, if they are found in the vicinity of the US again, send them to a work farm. Don’t release them until they have paid their debt. And, don’t allow their families to stay, on our dime, while that happens.
It is not broken, it needs to be enforced. You can’t ignore the law for 15 years and expect it to work magically overnight. I am sorry but I am not for immigration reform, as I consider it foolish behavior to change a law every 20 years to acccomodate the criminals amongst us. Maybe we should reform bank robbery laws.. give ‘em all amnesty, what the heck. Does that make any sense?? And before you get all upset with me, yes I believe that illegals are as bad as bank robbers. How much money have these guys stolen from our treasury, from our small businesses, from our economy?? When they are able to pay that back then maybe we can talk about amnesty. Until then I will only consider this another stepping stone in an attempt by the Dem party to unite the world under their new world order. – Lorica
Ohhh and as far as them being pro-life Christians, they are mostly Catholics, and don’t particularly stand in agreement with Evangelicals, when it comes to most things. I know Nuns who voted for Obama because they thought it was time for America to have a Black President. It seems to me that the death of millions of babies is far and away more important than having our 1st Black President, but I’m not a Nun. Also, Joe Biden is a Catholic and isn’t Pelosi??? Why hasn’t the church ex-communicated them yet for their stands on abortion, gay rights, and several other issues that fly in the face of Catholic teaching and the Pope’s holy word?? – Lorica
I’m sorry but you had to see this coming from these folks. It is their belief that they will get millions of new voters this way. I believe it will turn on them, but it will have to take a strong Republican party, true to it’s party platform in order to sway these people to our side, and sadly, I just don’t see that coming with the likes of most of these characters. But there is always a glimmer of hope.

Well, it took decades for the blacks of America to start developing an effective middle class, and they’re starting to see what we’ve been saying all along, that the donks just want to keep them poor and on the new plantation. That just doesn’t sit well with them, so now they’re looking to us as an effective alternative.
So there is hope for us about the criminal aliens who are about to steal birthrights to our country through the criminally abetting libs. Some day they too will develop a middle class.
Unfortunately, that takes decades, and in the meantime (if Duh-1 has his way) we will by then be a subservient state to the Peoples’ Democratic Republic of China.
Not to mention they will have a new job market that’s just opened up them–an Acorn Latino Division–coming soon to your neighborhood complete with federal funding.
Amen Rovin!! Which means more underage latino prostitutes for everyone!! /wretch – Lorica
What’s back door about this? Heck, it’s as obvious as the ears on Duh-1′s head.
Yes, ma’am, that is an “ears” joke. And I hope it offends the heck out of the president because his constant lying offends me terribly.
