Deval Patrick: “It’s a free country. I wish it weren’t, but … it’s a free country”

Revealing. Via the Boston Herald:

Independent gubernatorial candidate Tim Cahill blasted Gov. Deval Patrick yesterday for appearing to suggest he wished America wasn’t as free so that last week’s Glenn Beck rally at the Lincoln Memorial where Martin Luther King Jr. once spoke would never have happened.

“It’s a free country. I wish it weren’t, but . . . it’s a free country,” Patrick said on the “Jim & Margery Show” on WTKK-FM. “You know, you got to, you got to respect that freedom.”

The comment had Cahill lashing out at his liberal rival.

“It’s pretty unbelievable and typical of the far left,” Cahill told the Herald. “When they don’t like what the other side says, they want to close down free speech.”

Patrick later in the day defended his radio remarks, stressing he has long defended freedom of speech. The governor said he meant that Fox TV host Glenn Beck should not have chosen the site of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have A Dream” speech on its 47th anniversary to hold his “Restoring Honor” rally. The rally was held Saturday.

“I wish they hadn’t chose that place and that day to have that event,” Patrick said. “But it’s a free country. That was my point, and it has to be respected.”

Cahill, who has courted Tea Party followers and appeared on Beck’s show, slammed Patrick for saying the Lincoln Memorial was somehow sacred ground.

“If the governor thought it was OK to build a mosque near Ground Zero, he should think it’s OK for Glenn Beck and other people to speak at the Lincoln Memorial,” Cahill said. “He wants to have it both ways.”

The governor, a former Clinton administration civil rights official, recoiled at the notion he would abridge Beck’s or anyone’s rights.

“I’ve been involved in civil rights for most of my career,” Patrick said.

Hmmm. Well, it sounds like he’s talking about civil rights for liberals, because – if these comments and past remarks are any indication (he once accused Obama critics of being “almost at the level of sedition“) – then he is not very tolerant of viewpoints that aren’t in line with his own, to the point of bemoaning the fact that his opponents have the right to express those opinions in the first place.

These days, Patrick is what is unfortunately coming to be known as the “typical liberal.” As far as “dissent being patriotic”? Well, that popular liberal rallying cry got tossed out the window the moment Barack Obama was sworn in as President.

Ed Morrissey has the audio of Patrick’s comments.

This has been a running theme for liberals now for years. You can have free speech as long as you agree with them. It is a facist attitude of a power hungry mind. Thank God we will soon be rid of these types of low lifes. – Lorica

Hey, it’s right there in the First Amendment to the Constitution! “The right to free speech shall NOT be abridged, if it agrees with any lunatic that thinks that man is basically good and it’s ok to steal from some to buy others’ votes.”

Look it up if you don’t believe me. It’s what every shtinkin’ lib from the prez on down believes, and he ought to know. Why, to hear tell, he’s the world’s foremost constitutional lawyer.

I hear you, Deval. I mean, look at the degenerate idiots we’ve used our freedom to elect.

  4. Tex says:

I never cease to be shocked by the stuff that comes out of the mouths of Liberals. The Liberals, who railed against George Bush’s supposed trampling of the Constitution, which of course never occurred, are exactly the ones who want to trample on the Constitution as it relates to those who are opposed to their views. George Bush and his administration never made any attempt to silence the voices of opposition against him, nor did he or anyone else in his administration ever mention the desire to silence the voices of opposition. Instead, he took it all like a real man and a real leader.

I’m sure Duvall Patrick has all of Michael King’s speeches memorized including the date and place.
Serious question. I challenge anyone ANYONE to tell me, Why was it OK for Michael King to speak at the Lincoln Memorial, but not Glenn Beck. Secondarily, WHAT IN BECKS RALLY does Duvall Crackpot object to?
Libs are MY ENEMY. They are raping our childrens future for Marxism. I’m not playing along.

  6. Sefton says:

“I’ve been involved in civil rights for most of my career,” Patrick said.

So? You could say the same for Al Sharpton and others.
Some people might be “involved” in the movement, but to what end? Judging by some of the fruit, not so much for civil rights as personal gain through race baiting or a lobbying group of the Democrat arm seem to be the norm these days.

The axiom of Liberals:Iam okay you are not.Mr. Patrick is a poster boy for liberal free speech when it benefits only him.The use of dialogue has been transformed by Mr. Patrick to debase the other person you are trying to have an exchange of ideas with.Remember only my ideas have merit,”dissent being patriotic” ,by hectoring Hillary,is a great example.

Another incipient Commisar heard from. All he wants, deep down, is the freedom to realize his full potential.

  9. TexasDoc says:

Deval Hypocrite. Free speech for me but not for thee must be his personal motto.

  10. Zippy says:

I’m telling you people are losing their minds. It’s quite comical on the one hand. Hanging onto idiotic perceptions and speaking them OUT LOUD!

It’s equality or it isn’t. Sharpton commented that ‘THEY want to take that (MLK’s speech) away from us’. Now, didn’t MLK preach peace for all people? So now sharpton et al want to claim MLK’s words only for them? It’s these idiots who keep racism alive by proclaiming what they do.

Left losing libtrash show how divisive they are just by opening their mouth. Keep talking.

  11. Betty says:

Gov. Duvall Patrick just “slipped up” and said what all the liberals hold to, which is, Free speech for them, but not for us. The Lincoln Memorial is not sacred ground. It is a symbol of equality and freedom that extends to all. We need leaders that really represent those values and can unite a strong America, who still believe in “one nation under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all”.

  12. thomas mc donnell says:

devel patrick says he’s for civil rights. well not for white people. when he was head of the civil rights(sic) division of the justice dept. he was a major proponent of the selective oppression of white people(affirmative action).

  13. Carlos says:

In other words, “free speech” is ok even for us yahoos, as long as no one is listening.

When will they learn that the prettiest lipstick in the world won’t improve the pig that is their ideology?

  14. Dana says:

And our friends on the left wonder why conservatives fight so strongly against them, why we don’t just roll over and play dead. It’s really pretty simple: if we did roll over and play dead, they would surely make freedom dead. We know it, and, deep down, a lot of them know it, too.

  15. Zippy says:

We’ve been quiet for so long Dana believing in all honesty that left believing nutcases would grow up and stop trying to reenact their 60′s college experience/idiotologies…
