The al-AP story is actually mildly hostile to WikiLeaks. No shrieking from the ACLU about rising fascism. No interview with Cindy Sheehan. No lionizing of Julian Assange. No comparisons to the infamous Pentagon Papers case. No pontificating about the dastardly neocons ruining the world.

For fun, just imagine the tone of AP’s story if a Republican was President and this was happening.

No question, MD. If there were a Republican president, there would be no end of hand-wringing by AP, and breathless background stories about Germany in the 1930’s while casting dark hints that it’s happening again here.

But I see another reason why al-AP is frowning on WikiLeaks. The previous leaks endangered the lives of our troops in the field, and of those Afghans and Iraqis courageous enough to work with us. In other words, no one that AP considered important could possibly be hurt.

These leaks do not threaten the lives of our troops; however, they have the potential to embarass His Divine Munificence in the White House. That makes them much more signficant to AP. Think about it – if you’re the AP, which leaks would upset you more…leaks that could cost the lives of easily replaceable troops (who are probably from red states anyway) or leaks that could make Obama look ridiculous?

Hence the sudden shift by AP against WikiLeaks.
