Chicago mayoral candidate: The word “minority” should be for black people only

Liberal-on-liberal fighting over “minority set-asides.” Gotta love it:

State Senator James Meeks, a reverend at a South Side church and a candidate for mayor of Chicago, was trying to talk about his education policy yesterday.

Instead, during a forum on WVON radio, he wound up making another round of controversial comments about race. [Click here for video of Meeks’ remarks. — ST]

Meeks was talking about the city’s programs designed to benefit minority- and women-owned enterprises, which mandate that a certain share of city contracts go to such businesses.

“I think that the word ‘minority,’ from our standpoint, should mean African-American,” Meeks said, as reported by FOX Chicago. “I don’t think women, Asians and Hispanics should be able to use that title. That’s why our numbers cannot improve, because we use women, Asians and Hispanics, who are not people of color, who are not people who have been discriminated against.”

Later, when asked to clarify, he said that the City Hall programs should only stop their set-asides for “white women.”

As a result of the uproar, the Meeks campaign today issued a press release trying to “clarify” his remarks:

Today, the Meeks campaign released a statement saying that the candidate “strongly believes all minority and women-owned businesses deserve their fair share of City contract opportunities.”

But Meeks’ campaign said corruption in the program has left African American-owned businesses “the most underrepresented among city contractors. Lucrative contracts have repeatedly gone to companies disguised as minority- or women-owned, resulting in multiple investigations, firings and imprisonment on this issue,” Meeks’ campaign’s statement reads.

“As mayor, he would put an end to the corruption and lack of accountability that has been allowed to go unchecked,” the statement reads.

LOL. This guy’s ability to flip-flop would make Senator John “Flip Floppin'” Kerry jealous. ;)

But seriously, here’s an idea: How about setting aside all “minority set-asides” permanently because, well, aren’t they discriminatory, too? After all, they’re only available to so-called “minorities”, right? Of course we can’t do that, though, because it’s extremely important to liberals to divide everyone up into little victim groups and make them feel like they need to be “rescued” and “protected” from “The Man” – and who else can best “protect” them but “concerned” Democrats? At least that’s the way they’ve set the narrative for the last 50 years or so, anyway.

The whole scheme makes me nauseous. I can’t wait for the day when a majority of “minorities” finally wake up and see how just much damage liberals have inflicted not only on specific “victim” groups but America, also, thanks to the left’s politically-motivated need to try and keep “minorities” in a corner. As I’ve said before, the day that awakening happens will be the day that modern-day uber-liberalism’s phony boogeyman will be laid to rest – permanently.
