Congresswoman to Congress: “Go to Hell!” (UPDATED)

**Posted by Phineas

Eleanor Holmes Norton is the non-voting Delegate to the House of Representatives for the District of Columbia. Even though she cannot vote, she serves as Washington’s representative. She is also a dyed-in-the-wool progressive Democrat and a fan of spending. So, when the Republicans propose to eliminate the use of all government funds for abortion in the District, she gets a wee bit upset:

The Democratic non-voting representative for the District of Columbia told MyFoxDC.com that Congress should go “straight to hell” for trying to meddle in D.C. affairs.

Norton was referring to a provision in the stopgap budget bill House Republicans are pushing that would ban federal and local taxpayer dollars in the District of Columbia from being used to pay for abortions.

“We are absolutely outraged. This is the functional equivalent of bombing innocent civilians,” she said, according to MyFoxDC.com. “It’s time that the District of Columbia told the Congress to go straight to hell.”

Gotta love that “new tone,” eh?

Let’s set aside the laughable and fatuous hyperbole required to compare a budgetary decision to what Qaddafi has been doing in Libya. That’s par for the Democrats’ course. When it comes to “meddling in D.C. affairs,” however, Holmes needs to review the history of the district she represents. Article I, section 8 of the Constitution reads, in part:

To exercise exclusive Legislation in all Cases whatsoever, over such District (not exceeding ten Miles square) as may, by Cession of particular States, and the acceptance of Congress, become the Seat of the Government of the United States, and to exercise like Authority over all Places purchased by the Consent of the Legislature of the State in which the Same shall be, for the Erection of Forts, Magazines, Arsenals, dock-Yards, and other needful Buildings;

Said district was created by the Residence Act of 1790, based on the cession of lands by Maryland and Virginia. The Government of the district was established by the Organic Act of 1801 and amended in the Organic Act of 1871. Both these acts (the latter of which is still in force, I believe) were enacted by Congress in pursuance of their powers under the Constitution. Far from meddling where they don’t belong, they have a specific charge under our most basic law to involve themselves in D.C. affairs, including the manner in which local money is spent.

Before she next decides to blow off steam, perhaps Delegate Norton should take the time to review the proper role of the chamber in which she serves — which includes supervising D.C., not funding abortion — and the law regarding the district she supposedly represents.

Unless, of course, she likes making herself look foolish and ignorant.

ST adds (5:04 PM): And to top it all off, Senator Durbin is blasting the GOP on the issue of the vote on the abortion ban cutting off access to health care – in spite of the fact that he himself (along with numerous other Dems, including Obama) voted the same way numerous times in the past (via Amanda Carpenter).

What a bunch of flaming hypocrites!

The war on Happy Meals continues: NYC weighs in

Via Reuters:

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Several New York City council members unveiled a bid on Tuesday to ban toy giveaways in fast-food restaurant meals for children, emulating a San Francisco city law that will be enforced later this year.

City Council Deputy Majority Leader Leroy Comrie, who plans to introduce the bill on Wednesday, said banning toy giveaways would reduce the allure of fast-food restaurants for children and encourage the industry to provide healthier options.

“While I recognize that ensuring children have access to, and eat more, nutritious meals is ultimately the responsibility of their caretakers, the City Council can empower parents by making it harder for the fast food industry to target children with predatory marketing techniques,” he said in a statement.

A similar law was approved in San Francisco late last year and is due to go into effect on December 1.

Opponents of these moves include the National Restaurant Association and McDonald’s Corp, which used its now wildly popular Happy Meal to pioneer the use of free toys to market directly to children.

Mason Smoot, vice president and general manager for McDonald’s New York region, said taking away toys from children’s meals would not solve childhood obesity.

“On average, kids eat at McDonald’s about three times a month; that means about 87 other meals are eaten at home, school or elsewhere. That adds up to a discussion larger than toys,” Smoot said in a statement.

“We provide options for our customers and trust them to make the decisions that are right for their families. Politicians should too,” he said.

Think NYC believes ALL of its residents need help determining calorie and sodium counts? Think again (bolded emphasis added by me):

These regulations are nothing new. New York already bans trans-fats, and in 2008 the city began requiring fast-food restaurants to post calorie information (which I wrote about here and here).  The city only targeted fast food; those super fancy restaurants where they serve bone marrow and foie gras (basically pure animal fat) were exempt from the regulation (rich people must be better at determining when they can eat a high-fat meal).

Other cities have instituted similar regulations. San Francisco famously banned Happy Meal toys last year. Philadelphia requires posted calorie information, and, in a move that smacks of racism, the Los Angeles City Council actually barred new construction of fast-food restaurants — but only in neighborhoods where the residents are primarily African-American and Latino. Nice.

I swear, you cannot make this stuff up!

President Obama channels Marie Antoinette

Jeez, is this guy tone-deaf, or what? President Obama was at a town-hall meeting in Bucks County, PA, to tout his plans for energy independence* when a citizen peasant complained to him about high gas prices:

“Gas prices? They’re going to still fluctuate until we can start making these broader changes, and that’s going to take a couple of years to have serious effect,” Obama said.

Obama needled one questioner who asked about gas prices, now averaging close to $3.70 a gallon nationwide, and suggested that the gentleman consider getting rid of his gas-guzzling vehicle.

“If you’re complaining about the price of gas and you’re only getting 8 miles a gallon, you know,” Obama said laughingly. “You might want to think about a trade-in.”

Because, Lord knows, we can all just run out and buy a new or new-used car whenever we want in this great economy, especially with fuel prices surging** and the Cash for Clunkers program having artificially jacked-up the prices on used cars. And it’s not as if this uppity peon might need to spend the money on something else, such as a mortgage, kids’ expenses, food (with prices going up on that, too), etc.

And what’s with this “8 miles a gallon” nonsense? As Ed Morrissey points out, passenger cars haven’t had that kind of mileage since the 1970s.

We’ve gone from Bill Clinton, a president who famously said he feels our pain, to Barack Obama, who mocks an American’s sincerely felt worries. Way to go, sir. That’s really going to help your reelection chances in Pennsylvania, a state you desperately need.

Schmuck.

*No, really. Stop laughing.

Friendly reminder: Hardcore liberal ideologues are not our friends

Dan Gainor writes about two diehard liberal conferences coming up this weekend – just three hours apart from each other, both of which have goals of promising to do what then-candidate Obama scarily pledged in October 2008 shortly before he was elected: ‘fundamentally change America’:

Apparently, megalomaniacs need schedulers.

Just ask George Soros. The left-wing billionaire is helping fund two major conferences that start on the same day, in two different locations just a three hours apart by car. Two liberal events packed into one long weekend. God created the world in six days. Apparently, Soros, who sees himself as “some kind of god,”needs just a long weekend to start remaking today’s world in his image.

The emphasis of both conferences is a familiar one to American voters – change. Soros wants to begin changing the global economy in one event. In the other, his flunkies want to “Change the world. Change the media.”

Now that is change you can believe in. Sadly, those who actually report the news must believe in it because they sure as heck aren’t reporting on Soros or either event. And that’s even though staffers or even executives from Reuters, the Financial Times, NPR, PBS, The Washington Post and other major media outlets are speaking at one event or the other.

Wow.  Imagine that.

Continuing on, Gainor notes an especially hypocritical part of this weekend’s festivities, when you consider the fact that both conferences are sponsored by the uber-liberal Soros:

Think Progress’s Koch-hating Lee Fang [will be in attendance]. Think Progress is a project of Democrat John Podesta’s Center for American Progress, which was founded with Soros money. Fang is on the panel for: “Real Issues vs. Astroturf: Confronting the Koch Brothers,” and makes the laughable claim “this is not about liberals versus conservatives” when the entire goal of the left is to shut down the Kochs to defund the right.

Everywhere you they go in Boston, they’ll be making more left turns than NASCAR. It’s an event filled with lefties dissatisfied that the news media aren’t even more liberal, and their goal will be to make that happen. Whether it’s “Beyond Pronouns: Creating Real Stories About Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming People” or pushing for illegal immigrant rights, the conference is a predictable liberal take on pretty much everything.

But the over-arching theme is getting government to fix the media. Columbia University President Lee Bollinger, whose school also includes the well-known and partly Soros-funded Columbia School of Journalism, is one of several speakers advocating for increased government funding for media. He called for federal funding of the media in a 2010 Wall Street Journal piece with the terrifying headline: “Journalism Needs Government Help.” Bollinger pushed for the creation of a public media that combines NPR, PBS and Voice of America. He also wants to “end to the regulation of ‘indecent’ language and images in broadcast programming” and return to the Fairness Doctrine.

Make sure to read the whole thing.  It’s stomach-turning, but even with that said it’s also imperative we stay on top of the far left’s various agendas so we can make sure we’re prepared to counter them every step of the way, every day. These radicals rely on the American people to be “too busy” to pay attention to what they’re up to.   While it’s my belief that no one in reality is “too busy” to stay connected with what’s happening in the world, especially here on the home front, the sad reality is that all too many don’t keep up with what’s going on when the left thinks no one is watching. And that’s where we conservative political junkies come in.  The future of our country, as they say, depends on it.

In the words of the late, great Winston Churchill:

“Never give in–never, never, never, never, in nothing great or small, large or petty, never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.”

 Amen.
