Are Democrats playing “hide the poor & homeless” again with their national convention?

The Charlotte Observer files a report today [1] that talks about so-called “security plans” being finalized for the area surrounding Time Warner Cable Arena in uptown Charlotte, where President Obama will be renominated at the DNC 2012 (bolded emphasis added by me):

The Charlotte Area Transit System said it’s gotten a “strong indication” that the main bus station uptown will have to be moved because of the 2012 Democratic National Convention, and officials have started planning where they can create a temporary transit center.

CATS chief executive Carolyn Flowers, speaking at a luncheon Wednesday, said the transit system hasn’t heard officially from the local host committee about the size of the security perimeter around Time Warner Cable Arena, where President Barack Obama is expected to be renominated. But because the transit center is across Trade Street from the arena, CATS probably will have to pack up.

“We’re having internal discussions (about where to move),” said Olaf Kinard, director of marketing and communications for CATS. “It’s preliminary.”

Security plans will not be determined until much closer to the convention, said Kristie Greco, spokesperson for the Democratic National Convention Committee.

“One of the DNCC’s top priorities is to minimize impact on Charlotteans’ daily routines during the week of the convention,” she said.

The Charlotte Transportation Center is the nerve center for the city’s rail and bus service. It’s not only a start-and-go point for thousands of uptown workers, it’s also a hub for switching buses. It is adjacent to the CTC/Arena light-rail station, which probably would be temporarily closed as well.

As the John Locke Foundation’s Tara Servatius points out [2] via a handy crime chart, the uptown transit center is also a haven for vagrancy and crime. She writes:

Every major riot incident in recent years has originated from or been tied to the transit center area, and as recent history has shown [3], these mobs are getting more deadly in Charlotte. In the new era of flash robs, or robberies, beatings and riots planed on Facebook and other social networking sites, the transit center was a disaster waiting to happen.

Throw in all the national and international news cameras likely to show up right outside the arena, and you face the potential for anything that goes down at the Transit Center across the street to be caught on tape — and to turn into an international incident.

Prediction: Knowing the uptown crowd, I’m thinking so far away that these people will have to bring their hiking shoes and walk miles to get back in to the center city if they work there … for national security purposes of course. It’ll be sort of the equivalent of shipping the homeless out of town for the weekend, which I wouldn’t put past Charlotte elite.

In case you’re a David Frum-type reading this and are outraged at the suggestion that Democrat party leaders would deliberately want to hide the lower income class they’ve come to rely on for votes over the last several decades during their national convention, don’t be. The Democrats did everything they could to hide the poor and the homeless [4] in Denver in 2008, including actually handing out coupons [5] for “free” haircuts to street people. Don’t think they won’t try something similar in this dreadful Obama economy, especially considering how Democrats – led by the POTUS – have done everything they can to paint a much rosier picture of the American economy than what exists in reality.

Yeah, they don’t mind standing up for the “little man”, right? Sure. As long as they can either use them as political props, or keep them out of the national spotlight when it’s not convenient.
