Disturbing: Biden tells China he “fully understands” one-child policy

Via Weekly Standard’s Mark Hemingway comes this gem:

Good news, reproductive rights advocates and neo-Malthusian environmentalists! Vice President Joe Biden has no problem with the government forcibly sterilizing people and compelling abortions. From his remarks at Sichuan University in Chengdu, China yesterday discussing the U.S. debt:

What we ended up doing is setting up a system whereby we did cut by $1.2 trillion upfront, the deficit over the next 10 years.Β  And we set up a group of senators that have to come up with another $1.2 to $1.7 trillion in savings or automatically there will be cuts that go into effect in January to get those savings.Β  So the savings will be accomplished.Β  But as I was talking to some of your leaders, you share a similar concern here in China.Β  You have no safety net.Β  Your policy has been one which I fully understand — I’m not second-guessing — of one child per family.Β  The result being that you’re in a position where one wage earner will be taking care of four retired people.Β  Not sustainable.

So hopefully we can act in a way on a problem that’s much less severe than yours, and maybe we can learn together from how we can do that.

Moe Lane doesn’t think the Vice President meant that as a ringing endorsement of the brutal practice.Β Β  Nevertheless, he writes:

I’m sure that Biden didn’t actually mean to endorse the People Republic of China’s policy of population control via forced abortions; but he certainly meant to avoid making a moral judgement on the practice.Β  Which is, by the way, vile, disgusting, and not compatible with the reasonable expectations of moral behavior from a truly civilized nation-state.Β  I’d just thought that I’d pass that bit of cultural elitism along, since my country’s current leadership team is a bit too scared to.

Exactly. Wouldn’t want to offend the pro-abort lobby, would we?Β  On the other hand, this former Vice President and failed candidate for President has hinted around at the possibility of supporting a one-child policy right here in the US – in the interests of “saving the environment”, of course.

Just sayin’.

NRO’s Kathryn Jean Lopez has a must-read response/quote to Biden’s shocking, embarassingΒ comments:

β€œIt’s disappointing that Vice President Biden did not mention the severe women’s rights atrocities that are committed in the name of the One Child Policy β€” forced abortion, involuntary sterilization, and gendercide,” Reggie Littlejohn, president ofΒ Women’s Rights without Frontiers, says. β€œChina’s One Child Policy causes more violence to women and girls than any other official policy on earth. To merely mention the economic consequences is to turn a blind eye to the terrible human suffering caused by forced abortion. Chinese women are literally dragged out of their homes, strapped to tables and forced to abort.”

The policy, as it happens, has been not only a moral but a demographic disaster.Β β€œThe One Child Policy was instituted for economic reasons,” Littlejohn adds. β€œIt’s ironic that through this very policy, China has written it’s own economic, demographic death sentence.”

Let’s make sure the next White House administration gets all this, instead of kowtowing to our creditor.

Amen to that.Β  So much for being “pro-woman” and “pro-choice” – when you consider the fact that these women don’t have a choice.

Oh, c’mon, now – youΒ didn’t reallyΒ think Joe Biden would bring the foreign policy gravitas to theΒ Obama-Biden ticket that Β the MSMΒ asserted he would, did you?Β  :-?
