In the latest Afterburner, Bill takes a look at Independence Day at various times in our past and has a message for Americans worried about the state of the nation today:

We’ve seen worse. Lots worse.

Here is a piece that showed up in a TX newspsper yesterday:

It is the soldier, not the reporter who gives us freedom of the press.
It is the soldier, not the poet, who gives us the freedom of free speech.
It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who gives us the right to demonstrate.
It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who gives us the right to a fair trial.
It is the solier, not the pastor, who gives us the right to worship.
It is the soldier, not the politician, who gives us the right to vote.
It is the soldier who salutes the flag, serves under the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who gives the protestor the right to burn the flag.
    We should all remember this.
