Hispanic lawmakers to #DNC2012: Award more convention biz to Latinos, or else
It is to laugh, my dear readers:
Hispanic lawmakers are peeved at theΒ Democratic National ConventionΒ Committee for not hiring more Latino-owned businesses for next monthβs convention.
Upset over the lack of contracts, Hispanic lawmakers exchanged heated words Wednesday with a top DNCC official in a closed-door meeting on Capitol Hill. Afterward, Rep. Joe Baca, D-Calif., suggested that DNCC Chief Executive Steve Kerrigan should be fired if things donβt improve.
If the situation isnβt rectified, βthere will be a recommendation that the person who is in charge will not be in charge,β Baca told Politico.
The DNCC says itβs made minority contracting a big priority for the Charlotte convention, but Hispanic lawmakers believe there should be more Latino-owned businesses getting a cut of the money. Itβs unclear how many contracts the DNCC has awarded to minorities because the committee doesnβt publicly release that information.
βOur concern is that we think the numbers could be better,β Rep. Charles Gonzalez, D-Texas, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus chairman, told Politico. βWe just want to make sure they are aggressively pursuing the goals that we understood were set.β
Gonzalez said they want Kerrigan to βshow us what they will be able to accomplish between now and the next five weeks.β
Too bad these time-wasters in Congress don’t get that instead of handwringing over “minority-based contracts” at a political convention, they should be focused on working with the GOP on REAL solutions that would impact business owners in a positive way, which would pave the road to job creation for ALL Americans, no matter your race, sex, or whatever! Β I know this and I’m not even in Congress. Why they heck don’t they?? Β
