Pushback: The Mitt Romney we’ve wanted to see arrived yesterday

No, not the conservative one, but the one who will aggressively hit back on gutter tactics by the political opposition. Politico [1] reports (hat tip [2]):

Mitt Romney leveled his harshest criticism of President Obama’s reelection campaign to date in Ohio Tuesday, declaring that Obama should “take your campaign of division and anger and hate back to Chicago.”

Addressing a crowd of several thousand here in Chillicothe, Romney expanded on the main theme of his campaign since he chose Paul Ryan as his running mate: that the Republican ticket is offering “solutions,” while Obama is running a small and brutish reelection bid.

“This is an election in which we should be talking about the path ahead, but you don’t hear any answers coming from President Obama’s reelection campaign,” said Romney, accusing Obama of “taking things to a new low.”

Referring to Joe Biden’s comment that Romney and Republicans would let big business put Americans “back in chains” Romney said Obama’s “campaign and his surrogates have made wild and reckless accusations that disgrace the office of the presidency. Another outrageous charge just came a few hours ago in Virginia.”

“This is what an angry and desperate presidency looks like,” Romney said. “He won’t win that way.”

Here are Biden’s remarks [3] “in context”, just in case you were wondering:

Tuesday morning, Biden told a crowd of about 1,000 supporters, “Look at what they [Republicans] value, and look at their budget. And look what they’re proposing. [Romney] said in the first 100 days, he’s going to let the big banks write their own rules — unchain Wall Street. They’re going to put y’all back in chains.”

I absolutely LOVE that Mitt Romney hit back at the Obama campaign the way he did yesterday. He didn’t sink in the ditch alongside them – he stayed above it, and accused an administration that cruised into the White House on a blaze of glory with phony promises of “rising above” the “standard negative, nasty attacks” we are used to seeing in political campaigns, of sinking to depths they insisted they would not.

Now, you and I know that the Obama campaign used vicious attacks on John McCain and Sarah Palin in 2008, like the veiled accusations that McCain/Palin were going to try and use his race against him, the age attacks they promoted against John McCain, the despicable ad they ran against McCain in Florida on illegal immigration where they lied about both Rush Limbaugh’s AND McCain’s position on illegal immigration… and that’s just a small sampling. And don’t forget the bruising primary battle between Obama and Hillary Clinton, where his campaign slyly accused America’s “first black President” and his wife of raaaacism right before the primary took place in South Carolina, home to many black Democrats. It was so bad for the Clintons that after the primaries were over, prominent black Democrats were saying Bill Clinton had some apologizing to do.

Of course, the mainstream media being what they were in 2008 – and largely still are today – they glossed over Obama’s campaign of desperate negativity and division because they wanted him to win so badly, and instead decried as “a low point for political campaigns” provocative but revealing ads that were run by Republicans and their affiliated groups that brought up Obama’s troubling longtime “spiritual relationship” with America/Jew hater and Black Liberation Theology promoter Rev. Jeremiah Wright, and his strategic political association with unrepentant domestic terrorist Bill Ayers These ads were “cheap shots” and – yeah – “racist” to liberal politicians, left wing pundits/commentators, and their allies in the mainstream press.

But times are slowly changing. The disgusting super PAC made by former Obama staffers where they essentially accused Mitt Romney of letting a woman with cancer die has been called out as false not just by Fox News and conservative pundits, but also by normally reliable liberal-leaning outlets like CNN and ABC News. Same same with the DNC’s attacks on Paul Ryan’s Medicare plan. Wolf Blitzer took Debbie Wasserman Schultz to the woodshed just a couple of days ago over untruthful MediScare claims she and her party are making about Ryan’s plan.

What’s happening here? Obama’s not the “new kid in town” anymore. He’s become the entrenched politico, the “political insider” with a lot to lose, and because his ratings are tanking and more and more Americans no longer view him as a “messiah-like” figure, President Obama and his surrogates are on the defensive. And because he has no real record of substantive, positive achievement to run on, the idea is to make this campaign personal – Mitt Romney is a heartless killer of women. Ann Romney is a glorified SAHM with nannies. Paul Ryan wants to kick senior citizens to the curb. These attacks are so blatantly false, so patently absurd, so out there that even the mainstream media can’t throw a wet blanket on them anymore to put out the flames. Of course, the MSM have had a lot of help from New Media types and conservative think tanks, who have made sure these news outlets know the attacks are false, but they ARE starting to call out this administration. They won’t do it enough between now and November to make any of us happy – hey, this IS the liberal mainstream media after all – but the fact that they are actually calling out the Obama campaign on their gutter tactics is a pretty significant development this presidential election campaign cycle.

And so is Romney’s pushback from yesterday. I don’t anticipate nor do I expect him to directly hit back on every single desperate attack that comes from the Obama campaign and its PACs. He’s got surrogates who can manage that, not to mention the fact that New Media will respond hard to any factually inaccurate claim made by the campaign and its affiliates between now and November. But we’ve hit a pivotal point in this election. Romney just announced his vice presidential running mate in Paul Ryan, and the left has launched a full scale smear campaign against him. The sitting VP of the United States yesterday referenced back to slavery days in his attacks on Romney and Ryan and it was the kind of attack coming directly from the administration itself that warranted the response Romney gave it. The idea is to KEEP the administration on the defensive rather than the offensive because politicians in defensive mode over low blow attacks and blatant falsehoods usually end up slipping up eventually, which is happening with the Obama campaign right now.

More please.
