President Obama needs to wake the hell up regarding the Muslim Brotherhood

No, I don’t expect any “waking up” to happen, as the left’s naive and dangerous tendency to treat established radical public figures and regimes – especially Islamists masquerading as “moderates” – as allies of America is well-documented.  But all the same, National Review editor Rich Lowry sounds alarms bells today in a blistering rebuke of the Obama administration’s fawning admiration of the Muslim Brotherhood, in particular, its President – Mohamed Morsi. Lowry writes:

The great, acerbic 19th-century satirist Ambrose Bierce defined a revolution as “an abrupt change in the form of misgovernment.” He would understand events in Egypt since the fall of Hosni Mubarak very well.

In the signature revolution of the Arab Spring, the country turned its back on a secular dictatorship only to fall into the arms of what looks like a budding Muslim Brotherhood dictatorship. Meet the new pharaoh, same as the old pharaoh. Except Egypt’s old form of misgovernment may soon look progressive by comparison.

Muslim Brotherhood President Mohamed Morsi’s decree neutering the judiciary is the latest act in his steady consolidation of power. While he assiduously builds a dictatorship, the Obama administration just as assiduously tells itself bedtime stories about his good intentions. It’s a perfect division of labor — he goes about his empire-building with a clear-eyed realism; we consider it through a gauzy lens of delusion.

Since the end of Mubarak, the air has been thick with descriptions of the Muslim Brotherhood and Morsi as moderates, as basically no more than Islamic social democrats. Director of National Intelligence James Clapper called the Muslim Brotherhood “largely secular.” If he had been speaking of the Church of England, he might have been right.

Unfortunately, the Brotherhood’s credo is, “Allah is our objective; the Quran is our law; the Prophet is our leader; Jihad is our way; and death for the sake of Allah is the highest of our aspirations.” And it’s not kidding. Morsi summarized his program during the campaign as “the sharia, then the sharia, and finally the sharia.” (Unlike President Barack Obama, at least he had an agenda.)

Eric Trager of The New Republic describes how Brotherhood recruiting emphasizes rigidity. “Throughout this process,” he writes, “rising Muslim Brothers are continually vetted for their embrace of the Brotherhood’s ideology, commitment to its cause, and — most importantly — willingness to follow orders from the Brotherhood’s senior leadership.” In sum, he says, it is “a cultish organization that was never likely to moderate once it had grasped power.” Obviously, Trager would never make it as national intelligence director.

After Mubarak’s fall, we fooled ourselves about the level of support for the Brotherhood. We fooled ourselves about the Brotherhood abiding by its promise not to run for the presidency. We fooled ourselves about what a Morsi victory would mean for democracy. Why stop fooling ourselves now?

Morsi staged his latest power grab on Thanksgiving Day in the immediate aftermath of working with Obama to get a cease-fire in hostilities between Hamas (a Muslim Brotherhood offshoot) and Israel. In a New York Times piece that ought to be preserved in amber as a record of 21st-century liberal naiveté, the paper reported that in his talks with Morsi, “Mr. Obama felt they were making a connection.” How sweet.

“He was impressed with the Egyptian leader’s pragmatic confidence.” And who can resist the lure of pragmatic confidence?

“He sensed,” the paper continued, in a gushing tone, “an engineer’s precision with surprisingly little ideology.”

Disturbing. Make sure to read the whole thing.

Honestly, I think the President is fully awake regarding the Muslim Brotherhood. It’s just that the majority of Americans are asleep about it.

  2. This is the problem with Obhammud and his child’s history of the world. His gutless strategy of “leading from behind”, a polite term for sitting on his dead a*s while the region goes to hell, simply means that someone else such as Canada, France, or the UK has to attempt to lead by default. The entire situation would be vastly different if he were as hostile to our sworn enemies as he is to our allies abroad and his political opponents at home. If the things he and his minions are telling us about Benghazi are the truth then there is not much meaning in the word “lie” anymore.

  3. Carlos says:

I’m with Chelie: the President is fully aware of what the Muslim Brotherhood is, what it stands for and what direction they are taking their sorry excuse for a civilized nation.

Why would he allow that without so much as a phony whimper? Because the Muslim Brotherhood’s idea of governance fits so well with his own ideology, right down to the “pharoah” part on Morsi’s wish list. Dictatorships may vary in name, but they are all evil, autocratic malignancies on the face of humanity.

  4. Great White Rat says:

I’m with Chelie and Carlos too. It’s what you’d expect out of Obama.

    Beyond that:

After Mubarak’s fall, we fooled ourselves about the level of support for the Brotherhood. We fooled ourselves about the Brotherhood abiding by its promise not to run for the presidency. We fooled ourselves about what a Morsi victory would mean for democracy.

Who’s this “we” you’re talking about? I, for one, certainly wasn’t fooled. What we’re seeing now is exactly what I expected from an openly islamist regime – pretend to embrace democratic values so the liberals and the MSM can slobber over them, and then reveal thei true character once safely installed as the government. Anyone who’s the least bit surprised by this wasn’t paying attention.

As for Obama “making a connection” with Morsi, that’s not a new thing. The Obama junta will do anything it can to aid the overthrow of pro-American autocracies (such as the Mubarak government), especially if they’ll be replaced by rabidly anti-American totalitarians. Hell, they even helped overthrow Khadaffy, who had been neutered to the point where he wasn’t sufficiently anti-American to suit them.

Show me a left-wing anti-American regime anywhere in the world – Iran, Venezuela, Cuba, Russia, Syria, anywhere – and you’ll find Obama kissing up to them and treating them like his allies. He doesn’t see them as enemies – that term is reserved for Republicans. Those nations who remain pro-American despite Obama – the U.K. and Israel, for example – receive only insults for their trouble.

I’d sum up the Obama foreign policy as something right out of the Wizard of Oz – no brain, no heart, and no courage.

More on this: from a Morsi interview in Time magazine:

President Obama has been very helpful, very helpful. And I can say, really, that his deeds coincide with his intentions.

And that says it all, doesn’t it?

  6. bill glass says:

Yeah, agreed, it’s part of his plan.

  7. mudguy says:

Why should a moslem wake up? He has never been a sleep. He is doing what any GOOD moslem would do.

  8. Sefton says:

The sad thing about all this is where the left in our country stand. How they can’t see this as the prelude to their own destruction is beyond me. And yet the trust they have for Obama and his administration goes unobstructed.
The hypocrisy is well known in regards to the liberal freedoms the left supposedly espouse and the antithesis of those same freedoms in Islamic law, yet it seems they would rather pretend this disparity doesn’t really exist.
Related to that, it always makes me laugh to see that the staunch supporters of the left – entertainers, elitist educators, journalists… are the same people that totalitarian governments, once in control, force into state mandated labor; and if they have a problem with it, they’re imprisoned or exterminated. Not to mention what an Islamist sharia dominated society would present.
It’s a grand delusion I suppose I’ll never understand about them.

  9. Carlos says:

Hitler was about efficiencies, hence the “labor” camps, ovens and gas chambers.

Muslims are not concerned about efficiencies, only about mindlessly obeying whatever evil they can from their putrid books of incantations, so instead of mass murders in gas chambers there will be beheadings galore!

Just think of all the fun all those misanthropes will have! And all in the name of “diversity” as understood by the leftists.

  10. Great White Rat says:

And now the Muslim Brotherhood is hiring thugs to beat up men taking part in the protests. And the women? The thugs get to sexually molest them.

But I guess if King Putt thinks this is a sign of an emerging democracy, who are we mere mortals to take note of the facts?

  11. Carlos says:

@GWR: When you speak of “King Putt,” are you speaking of our Golfer-in-Chief or was that a typo and you meant to speak of “King Putz,” at which he is world champion when it comes to making decisions.

For proof I submit to you Benghazi. And the “fiscal cliff.” And attending such annoyances as national security briefings – anytime! And a myriad of other tasks he was hired to do that interfere with the lifestyle to which he has become all too accustomed while the nation goes down the drain.
