#GunControl : Five things liberals hate, aka “facts”

**Posted by Phineas

From Reason.TV, Libertarian Nick Gillespie presents five facts the Biden Task Force and Congress need to remember, as they consider what to do about guns and gun violence:

And if you can’t listen to the video, here’s a partial transcript:

1. Violent crime – including violent crime using guns – has dropped massively over the past 20 years.

The violent crime rate – which includes murder, rape, and beatings – is half of what it was in the early 1990s. And the violent crime rate involving the use of weapons has also declined at a similar pace.

2. Mass shootings have not increased in recent years.

Despite terrifying events like Sandy Hook or last summer’s theater shooting in Aurora, Colorado, mass shootings are not becoming more frequent. “There is no pattern, there is no increase,” says criminologist James Allen Fox of Northeastern University, who studies the issue. Other data shows that mass killings peaked in 1929.

3. Schools are getting safer.

Across the board, schools are less dangerous than they used be. Over the past 20 years, the rate of theft per 1,000 students dropped from 101 to 18. For violent crime, the victimization rate per 1,000 students dropped from 53 to 14.

4. There Are More Guns in Circulation Than Ever Before.

Over the past 20 years, virtually every state in the country has liberalized gunownership rules and many states have expanded concealed carry laws that allow more people to carry weapons in more places. There around 300 million guns in the United States and at least one gun in about 45 percent of all households. Yet the rate of gun-related crime continues to drop.

5. “Assault Weapons Bans” Are Generally Ineffective.

While many people are calling for reinstating the federal ban on assault weapons – an arbitrary category of guns that has no clear definition – research shows it would have no effect on crime and violence. “Should it be renewed,” concludes a definitive study, “the ban’s effects on gun violence are likely to be small at best and perhaps too small for reliable measurement.”

Setting aside the somewhat gratuitous shots (1) at the Patriot Act and the Iraq war at the end, Gillespie has an excellent point: laws made solely out of emotion are likely to be bad laws, and we should wait, stop, and think before doing anything drastic, particularly something that curtails constitutional liberties.

Trouble is, I think the Left has another goal in mind.

Your tax dollars in action: feds fund computer game to fight global warming

AKA, “A problem that does not exist.” But, hey, it’s only $100,000 of our money:

A new video game featuring a black alien female superhero delivered to Earth to fight global warming is about to hit the market thanks to a $100,000 grant from the Obama administration.

The National Endowment for the Arts is funding the Spelman College of Atlanta, Ga.’s multi-episode game called “HERadventure.” In the grant announcement made last year, the NEA said the story “focuses on a young female superhero sent to Earth to save her own planet from devastation because of climate changes caused by social issues impacting women and girls.”

So, since they can’t prove man-produced CO2 causes climate change, it’s now the result of the Republican “War on women?” It was inevitable, I suppose, conflating two myths into one. I’m surprised they haven’t blamed climate change on racism, too.

Oh, wait. They have.

Meanwhile, it looks like Senator Coburn has another item for his “Waste Book.”

Cynical minds think alike, @jimgeraghty edition

Writing in today’s issue of his Morning Jolt newsletter (1), National Review reporter Jim Geraghty gave his impression of the deeper meaning of Vice President Biden’s task force on gun violence and its likely recommendations:

If I were truly cynical, I would think that the Obama White House would prefer to put forth a package of reforms that was rejected by House Republicans (and a few Democrats) so that every high-profile shooting between now and November 2014 can be blamed on John Boehner and those unreasonable, uncompromising House Republicans.

Nah, they wouldn’t be so callous as to exploit human deaths that way, would they?

Like the sun rises in the East.

Shocking: Implementation of ObamaCare is a job killer for franchise expansion

Via Fox Business (bolded emphasis added by me):

Dan Drennen says his franchisees are sitting on their hands. According to the general manager of Visiting Angels Living Assistance Services, multi-unit franchisees are withholding expansion in the face of the Affordable Care Act’s employer mandate.

Drennen said single owner deals continue to come in, as Visiting Angels has 437 franchise locations, and near 420 individual franchisees. But for many of those nearing the 50-employee level, where the employer mandate kicks in and health-care is a requirement or a $2,000 annual penalty per employee is due, they’re staying put.

“Everyone is in a holding pattern,” he said. “In the last year, we have between 30 and 40 [multi-franchise] deals that have been held off, because it’s not a perfectly clear picture.”

Paul Mangiamele, CEO of Bennigan’s, said he has several multi-store agreements with franchisees that have been shelved since the ACA became law. Bennigan’s franchises cost $35,000 in fees to open per location, Mangiamele said. If someone signs a five- store deal with the franchise, Bennigan’s charges $35,000 for the first store, and a $10,000 deposit upfront for the remaining four locations.

So the expansion slowdown not only halts job growth under the Bennigan’s name, but withholds the company from collecting about $100,000 in fees.

“This very mandate will stifle the growth that the administration touts it will help,” Mangiamele said. “It’s puzzling how this makes sense for anyone in D.C. These are jobs that would impact high unemployment.”

Don Fox, CEO of Firehouse of America, a restaurant franchise, said he plans to bring his franchisees together next month for a health-care summit. His multi-location franchisees, those with five or more restaurants, will discuss how the law impacts their businesses.

“If [a franchisee] is in a five-store agreement, for our brand, opening restaurant number five means the mandate will apply. In essence, what I have done is put my entire investment for restaurant number five toward offering paying for health care. So why open it?” he said.

These are troublesome realities that CEOs, small business owners, and potential franchisees in the REAL world have to contemplate in the face of the implementation of the mammoth legislation known as the ACA aka “ObamaCare.” Unlike the centralized-government agenda-driven idiots at Big Labor headquarters, popular “progressive” websites like Think Progress, and far left think tanks who think it’s their job to threaten and “punish” these businesses by way of pushing for boycotts, business-savvy CEOs, small biz owners, & potential franchisees are actually running the numbers and see that ObamaCare is going to impact their bottom line and as a result, they have to make adjustments. For some potential franchisees, the risk is too big to take so they hold off – and that translates into (duh) ZERO jobs. For those who did take the risk, if they don’t make these adjustments – like cutting back hours so they don’t fall under the ObamaCare rule that they have to offer health care coverage, it won’t just be hours lost – but jobs lost.

Making matters worse are the absolute liberal fools who think boycotting businesses will actually “force” their hands into keeping hours like they are without layoffs and cut backs in hours and benefits. WRONG. Not only do owners typically NOT comply with liberal threats of this nature, but – carried out to its logical conclusion – boycotts only end up HURTING the very employees liberals claim to want to “help.” NOTE TO CLUELESS LIBERALS: A drop in customers over a period of time typically means businesses eventually will have to cut back on the number of employees. Hint hint.

Anyway, all of this was entirely predictable and in fact was predicted by many of us well in advance of the eventual passage of ObamaCare. To those of you whose hours and / or jobs might be on the line as a result of this, and who VOTED for Obama, don’t say we didn’t tell ya so. Because we did.
