Just look at how rough it is to be middle class in California...

Gas is very expensive - we always seem to be #1 as far as the highest price goes.

Sales tax - in most places it's above 8% and in some 9%. Where I live it's 8.625%.

Income tax - very high, as you all know.

Vehicle license fee - .065% of the value of your car (I think that's what it is right now).

Housing Prices - Median value of a home (per Zillow) in 2012 was $324,500. In the LA Metro it was $414,900 in the San Jose area it was $630,800. Prices are more reasonable in the Central Valley ($225,200 for Sacramento, $142,300 for Fresno). Of course the areas with the lower values have higher unemployment rates.

California is a mess, period.

California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom was on Fox & Friends this morning in response to TX Governor Rick Perry's efforts to recruit businesses to relocate to a profitable business-friendly environment. A comparison between the states showed TX ahead in such categories as unemployment, taxes, etc. All Newsom could offer was historical inanities such as how many Nobel Prize winners lived in CA. It was a classic case of running scared.
