Tales of the #Thugocracy: Oh, so that’s why they raided Gibson Guitar

"Nice business you got here..."

“Nice business you got here…”

You might recall a bizarre federal raid on legendary guitar manufacturer Gibson Guitar back in 2011: they were accused of importing illegally harvested wood from India and Madagascar under a century-old law. The feds showed up with automatic weapons, seized “evidence,” and generally disrupted operations to Gibson’s great cost. After all that, no criminal charges were filed, but Gibson had to agree to pay a $300,000 fine and toss $50,000 to an environmental group as penance for being “careless.”

Weird, right? Why all this attention to Gibson, when rival Martin & Co. used the very same “illegal” wood, yet wasn’t raided?

And, just like that, a light goes on:

Grossly underreported at the time was the fact that Gibson’s chief executive, Henry Juszkiewicz, contributed to Republican politicians. Recent donations have included $2,000 to Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., and $1,500 to Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn.

By contrast, Chris Martin IV, the Martin & Co. CEO, is a long-time Democratic supporter, with $35,400 in contributions to Democratic candidates and the Democratic National Committee over the past couple of election cycles.

What would have seemed like a crazy conspiracy theory straight out of the fever swamps just a year ago now looks all too plausible, after the IRS scandal and the news that the Obama people had been targeting conservatives since 2008.

The message here to Mr. Juszkiewicz and people like him is crystal clear: “Thinking about making a political donation? Maybe you should think again.

“First Amendment?” What’s that?

Wasn’t that the same when it came to shutting down GM and Chrysler dealerships? These “F”ing people are the most pathetic losers on the planet, yet those on the left go bats**t crazy over them. I feel like I am personally witnessing the take over of the Nazis or the Communists. Just shows the depth of deception you can be under when you have no guide to help you thru this life. – Lorica

Some in Congress are asking that very same question.

  3. Carlos says:

Seems to me that, if a direct path can be established between Lerner at the IRS and the people who raided Gibson, Gibson should be able to sue the IRS and Lerner personally for all the associated costs with the raid and “donations.”

Unjust enrichment and all that, ya know.

So tell me once again, what the hell was it about Romney that was so objectionable?

  5. SiGraybeard says:

I don’t mean to be rude, but I wrote about this on Aug. 28, 2011, three days after the story on the Gibson raid.

The only thing “new” about this is that recent revelations about the IRS give the allegation more credence.

  6. Carlos says:

And I believe so did ST or Phineas about that time, SiGraybeard, so what’s your point? As you yourself noted, the only thing “new” about this is the recent allegations against the IRS, but I believe if you will go back and read it slowly that’s what the whole point of this post was.

I don’t mean to be rude, either, but try to keep up.

  7. I’d forgotten about that raid!

Yes, now that the IRS scandal has been exposed it’s quite possible that this was part of that same thing. Goes to show that we need a much more thorough investigation of that department.

And as we’ve all been saying, if this is what the IRS gets away with, imagine what’ll happen if ObamaCare is fully implemented. Need life-saving medicine? Better not have contributed too much money to the GOP….

  8. Lorica says:

I am happy someone is Congress is Phineas. Taken as awhole, this administration has been the most corrupt in our history. They make Tammany hall look like shoplifters. These people have stolen treasure untold from the people and have lonely laughed at us like we were nobodies. Then wasted it on stupid program after stupid program. It is so amazing how easily the average leftist is deceived.

Carlos, your passion is nice, but you should not be mean to allies. Mr. Graybeard was keeping up, so play nice. – Lorica

  9. BBHunter says:

    - Ok. Now I understand why raving Lefties like Ronstadt went with Martin instead of Guild or Gibson.

  10. Drew the Infidel says:

With each and every occurrence of this type Michelle Malkin is starting to look like a clairvoyant because of her book “Culture of Corruption”, written at the outset of this adminstration.
