ST, that photo makes me homesick for Nags Head or Kill Devil Hills…

I’ve spent parts of a few summers at Nag’s Head. Last year I found myself briefly in Charleston and went to Sullivan’s Island. Were I forced to live on the east coast my choice would be on the barrier islands off the Carolina coasts.

Incidentally, if any of you find yourselves in Chas, drop by Poe’s Tavern on Sullivan’s Island. Unless you dislike a) good food, b) good local beers and c) Edgar Allen Poe.

President Obama would like to think that those who oppose him, do so out of racism. That would certainly make things easier, because it would mean that the opposition is not only irrational, but mean-spirited as well. But to paraphrase a great man whom we honor today, we oppose Obama not because of the color of his skin, but because of the content of his policies.

The frustrating thing about well-meaning liberals is that when their policies don’t work, they think it MUST be the fault of someone or something else, and the “fix” is always MORE of the same unworkable policy regardless of cost, because it could not be POSSIBLE that their policy is tragically flawed.

Karl Marx wrote a comprehensive treatise on economics, Das Kapital. On paper it worked just fine. But Marx understood there were a few weaknesses which required a TEMPORARY “dictatorship of the proletariat.” Afterwards society would enter a Nirvana of social justice, void of the economic Darwinism of capitalism. Social and economic struggle would end.

After a 70 year experiment in the Soviet Union, the theory collapsed as it was bound to do in the REAL world. However, there are still so many that believe that with just a tweak here and there, and a ridding of its greedy opponents, Nirvana is still just around the corner.

This reminds me of one of my favorite Ronald Reagan Jokes (He used Democrat/Republican terms, but it works with liberal/conservative terms too):

A woman married a true believing Democrat. Unfortunately after 4 years they divorced. The following year the woman married a Republican. On her wedding night with the Republican, it came time to “consummate the marriage.” The woman requested the Republican to please be gentle because she was a virgin. The Republican was incredulous and asked how was that possible since he knew she had been married to a Democrat for 4 years. The woman replied that each night for 4 years when she and the Democrat went to bed, the Democrat would sit on the edge of the bed and tell her stories about how great sex was GOING TO BE until they both fell asleep.

  4. ST, your Panthers looked good in their last game I watched. However, the same cannot be said for my Cowboys.

I have been a Cowboys fan since ’60 (year of inception) and not just since they started winning. This year they look worse than last, if such is possible.

I have forgotten more football than Jason Garrett, a.k.a “Red Jesus”, will ever know.

Jesse, you put me in mind of the story of the economist. Suffice to say that the punchline is “Of course it works in practice. The question is, will it work in theory?”
