Memorial service to be held Weds. for Statesville church bus crash victims

Via Charlotte’s WSOC-TV:

STATESVILLE, N.C. β€”Β On Wednesday, a Statesville church will hold a memorial service for anyone who wants to pay respects to six people who died in a bus crash.

Members of Front Street Baptist Church were on their way back from a retreat in Tennessee last week when they crashed.

A private service was held Sunday.

Here are some specifics on what happened:

On Wednesday, an 18-member church group was returning from a trip to Tennessee. Investigators said a tire on the bus failed, which caused the bus to careen into a median, and crash into an SUV and a tractor-trailer just outside of Knoxville.

Eight people, including the six church members, were killed. Twelve others were taken to local hospitals.

“Since it happened, we’ve been coming down here.Β  When they said Front Street Baptist, I’m like, ‘That’s up the street from my house,’ so we came right on down here when it happened,” said Statesville resident Latasha Starks.

The 6 church victims were all senior citizens, in the age range of 66 to 95. Β Please remember to keep their families – including those of the other two victims who died – in your thoughts and prayers, as well those who are recovering from the horrific crash.
