Your tax dollars at work: EPA staffer paid $120k per year while watching porn at work

I have to ask: How do I get this job?

A congressional committee grilled leaders of the Environmental Protection Agency on Wednesday following reports that an agency employee confessed to spending between two and six hours per day viewing pornography on his government-issued computer during work hours.

Witnesses in the House Oversight and Government Reform committee hearing confirmed that the worker, whose name has not been disclosed, is still receiving his $120,000 salary and continues to have access to EPA computers.

When an investigator went to interview him, he was at his desk surfing sexually explicit websites.

‘How much pornography would it take for an EPA employee to lose their job?’ asked an incredulous Rep. Darrell Issa, the California Republican who chairs the committee.

‘What does it take for you to take somebody off the computer when you discover they’re doing it? … when someone has done wrong, they’re still on the job,’ Issa fumed.

That’s a darned fine question and, if you read the rest of the article, you’ll find a rare moment of agreement between Issa and Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD). Fool that I am, I always thought one had to work hard to earn good money. Now I know that all I need is a job at the EPA and an account at Boom-Chikka-Wow.com. I bet EPA will even pay for the subscription.

And remember, these are the same people who always say they need more of your money, and the same agency that claims ever-more power over our lives.

We’re in the best of hands.

.@CNN #MH370 coverage hits absurd lows w/ US poll on how many believe there are survivors

What

Shaking my head.

There have been across the board complaints both from the left and the right on the ridiculous amount of coverage time CNN has given to the Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 tragedy.  While there is no question the horrific story deserved covering and scrutiny, the complaints have centered around, among other things, the news network spending 24-7 pretending to have “BREAKING NEWS” when they really didn’t.

This poll, released by CNN, will certainly not help matters.  Check out the headline:

CNN headline

Yeah, this question was asked.

Story:

Most Americans believe the search for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 should continue, but roughly half the country thinks the arduous search is being conducted in the wrong place, according to a new national poll.

The CNN/ORC International poll comes nearly two months after the March 8 disappearance of the plane carrying 239 people. The Beijing-bound flight took off from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Nearly eight in 10 respondents, or 79%, think there are no survivors.

After failing to find any wreckage or debris on the ocean surface, authorities last week announced the suspension of aerial searches to focus efforts instead on 60,000 square kilometers of the ocean floor, a process that could take six to eight months.

[…]

Slightly more than half of all Americans — or 52% — believe that the general public will eventually find out what occurred, but 46% say that the fate of the missing airliner will always remain a mystery.

[…]

Fewer Americans — about 42% — think hijackers may have been involved, while 9% believe that space aliens or beings from another dimension were involved.

Outside the Beltway’s Doug Mataconis comments:

To be honest, you could probably find 9% of Americans to answer yes to almost any question, and I have no doubt that some of the people who answered yes here probably did so to mess with the pollster, I know I would. The real issue, though, is why CNN though it was a good idea to (1) poll people who have no idea of the actual facts of the disappearance for their theories on what happened and (2) to ask them such an exceedingly silly question.

That goes double for the “Do you think there were any survivors?” question. Frankly, I find it extremely disrespectful and exploitative to their respective memory.  Shame on CNN.

I wish I could say this came from The Onion. Sigh. *shakes head*

Is Obama’s Environmental Protection Agency blocking inspector general probes?

SMH

Disturbing report from Fox News:

The EPA was accused Wednesday of tolerating waste, fraud and “criminal conduct” in its own ranks, as a House committee hearing aired allegations of employee misconduct that have cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The inspector general’s office — the official watchdog tasked with overseeing the agency — also claims it’s being blocked from doing its job by a unit within the EPA.

“I’m very concerned that vital information regarding suspected employee misconduct is being withheld from the OIG,” Patrick Sullivan, assistant inspector general, testified before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

“This is truly a broken agency,” committee Chairman Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., said, adding that the employee problems have gotten to the point of being “intolerable.”

The committee revealed several startling allegations and cases shared by the inspector general’s office. In one case, an employee was getting paid for one or two years after moving to a retirement home, where the employee allegedly did not work. When an investigation began, the worker was simply placed on sick leave.

In another case, an employee with multiple-sclerosis was allowed to work at home for the last 20 years. However, for the past five years, she allegedly produced no work — though she was paid roughly $600,000. She retired after an investigation.

Obviously, we need to get to the bottom of this but my primary immediate concern is what will happen to the assistant inspector general – Patrick Sullivan – who is investigating this. We’ve seen before what happens to inspectors general who run afoul of the Obama administration’s “look the other way” approach when it comes to left-wing corruption and wrongdoing.

Stay tuned.

#NCSEN match-up finally set: Tillis (R) will take on Hagan

Thom Tillis

North Carolina House Speaker Thom Tillis

I watched the results as they came in last night, and it was clear once the State Board of Elections site got their “display side” website errors fixed that the NC primary for the right to challenge Hagan in the fall wasn’t going to be much of a contest:

N.C. House Speaker Thom Tillis, who had full-fledged support from the state and national Republican establishment, beat back challengers favored by tea party activists and Christian conservatives to win the right Tuesday to take on Democratic Sen. Kay Hagan in November.

In Tillis’ victory speech, delivered in front of an American flag at an uptown Charlotte hotel, he wasted no time in framing the fall campaign as a fight to not only retire Hagan, but also strike a blow against President Barack Obama’s policies and wrest control of the Senate from the Democrats.

“Kay Hagan and (Senate Majority Leader) Harry Reid are nothing but an echo chamber for President Obama’s worst ideas,” Tillis said. “If we want to change the mess of Obamacare, we have to change our senator.”

[…]

With 97 percent of the precincts reporting, Tillis, who lives in Huntersville, received 45.67 percent of the vote. He needed 40 percent to avoid a July 15 runoff that would have forced him to spend precious time and money that he’ll now get to spend trying to unseat Hagan.

For Brannon supporters, this loss is understandably a bitter pill to swallow.  Brannon was the Tea Party favorite here, had the backing of popular Senators Rand Paul and Mike Lee, popular conservative talk show host Glenn Beck, and the conservative group Freedomworks. They campaigned hard, but in the end primary voters picked Tillis – who had the backing of Karl Rove, NC Governor Pat McCrory, former FL Governor Jeb Bush and even had a late endorsement by Mitt Romney.

Hopefully the wounds this primary inflicted on Republicans in this state will heal soon and everyone will unite, because we need to defeat Kay Hagan and make both Obama’s and Harry Reid’s jobs a lot more difficult – which the GOP can do with a majority in the US Senate:

The winner this fall could tilt the partisan balance in the closely split U.S. Senate, and North Carolina’s importance in the national picture is readily apparent in the nearly $20 million spent by outside political groups in recent months to influence the race, particularly voters’ opinions about the federal health care law.

[…]

But, to beat Hagan, Tillis will first have to unite a state GOP that remains a reflection of the fissures dividing the national party. The combined vote totals for Brannon and Harris nearly matched Tillis’ total.

“The factionalization within the state GOP is still there,” said Michael Bitzer, a political scientist at Catawba College. “The big question for Tillis: Can he consolidate that half of the Republican Party and get them energized for November? He’ll have their votes – if he can get them to the polls.”

Tillis reached out to his primary opponents during his speech Tuesday night, saying he and they “are on the same team – the team to beat Kay Hagan.”

Neither Tillis nor Brannon would have been my first choices to take on Kay Hagan, but Tillis is the winner and more than anything I want the woman responsible for helping craft and shove through Obamacare – which has cost this state jobs and caused nearly 500,000 people to lose their insurance – out of office.  Senator Hagan is also staunchly pro-abortion, and has the backing of abortion groups like Emily’s List.  North Carolina is a pro-life state, and I hope Thom Tillis doesn’t hesitate to point that out when Hagan tries the tired, stale war on women tactics her campaign staff are already launching.

Onward we go.
