Minnesota woman makes Miss USA pageant history, Prince Harry is engaged and more in our first Good News Wednesday link round-up…

LET’S HEAR IT FOR MIKALYA!

With her bid to become Miss Minnesota, Mikayla Holmgren broke barriers, reports the Star Tribune:

Mikayla Holmgren made history this weekend when she became the first woman with Down Syndrome to compete in the Miss Minnesota USA pageant, and as far as pageant officials know, the first in the country.

The 22-year-old Bethel University student looked every part a seasoned pageant competitor as she strutted across the stage, hands on hips, in a coral one-piece bathing suit, then a sequined royal blue gown.

Holmgren didn’t win the crown, but she won a lot of hearts.

Well done, ma’am. Well done.

PRINCE HARRY THE ROMANTIC

To the delight of royal family watchers everywhere, Britain’s Prince Harry and US actress Meghan Markle officially announced their engagement on Monday. Much was made of how at ease both seem to be with each other in the midst of so much public scrutiny, but perhaps more fascinating was Harry’s apparent tribute to his mother the late Princess Diana:

The prince and the Suits actress posed for photos at Kensington Palace’s Sunken Garden to celebrate their happy news. And the location was no fluke. This past April, it was the location of a temporary garden dedicated to the memory of Princess Diana, who would have been “best friends” with Meghan, according to Harry.

Markle’s engagement ring was personally created by Prince Harry, with stones contributed from his late mother. The center stone is from Botswana, where the couple traveled together this summer. And the two stones on each side are from Princess Diana’s personal collection, according to ABC News. The gold band was created by Cleave and Company, which is the Queen’s jeweler.

The two will have a spring 2018 wedding. Here are more details, via CNN International:

One Ohio family will be donating the nearly 1,000 coats they purchased on Black Friday to charity:

However crazy you went on Black Friday, you’ve got nothing on Paul Lemasters.

He needed a rental truck to haul his purchases away after buying 850 coats to give to charity.

Lemasters and his family bought hundreds of coats at the Old Navy on Waterstone Boulevard in Mason Friday morning. He planned to hit two more Old Navy locations, too.
