SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — As the Occupy Sacramento movement settles in for another night inside Cesar Chavez Park, another group sits, watches and wonders if they’ll ever get what they call “their park” back.
“These homeless people have been out here alot longer than you have,” one homeless person tells CBS13.
For years this plaza in the heart of Sacramento has been a homeless hide-away. But some just want the Occupy group to go away:
“I just wish they’d give us our park back,” one homeless woman says.
She’s one of dozens of homeless who’ve signed a petition:
Part of the problem, some homeless argue, they feel they’ve lost their freedom.
“They got their own security, they act like the police,” one man tells Lopez. “Anytime you do anything they say you can’t do this and that … and we’re saying ‘you’re not the police.’”
But the allegations of harassment go both ways.
“She on numerous occasions came to me with violent threats like “I’m going to get you,’ just terrible things,” one Occupy organizer says.
The Occupy leader felt so threatened by a homeless woman, she thought about getting a restraining order.
So, like – I’m confused. If the “Occupiers” are “the 99%” and the homeless don’t want them there, what does that make the homeless?
SAN DIEGO (CBS) — A pair of Southland street cart vendors who were forced to shut down their businesses after “Occupy” protesters vandalized their carts are hoping to get some help from local residents.
KNX 1070?s Tom Reopelle reports a fundraiser in the Gas Lamp district in San Diego on Monday night [11-7] is aimed at helping two vendors get back on their feet.
That group first settled in to the plaza Oct. 7 and set up a tent city which has since twice been taken down by police.
Coffee cart owner Linda Jenson and hot dog cart operators Letty and Pete Soto said they initially provided free food and drink to demonstrators, but when they stopped, the protesters became violent.
And according to one city councilman, bodily fluids were used in the attacks.
“Both carts have had items stolen, have had their covers vandalized with markings and graffiti, as well as one of the carts had urine and blood splattered on it,” said Councilman Carl DeMaio.
The damages will likely require at least a complete cleaning if not a replacement of the cart covers, DeMaio said.
In addition to the attacks, the vendors also said they recently received death threats.
Proceeds from the fundraiser will go directly to help the two business owners.
KPBS reports that help is coming from the city “in various forms”
Now help from the city is arriving in various forms. But with the economy hurting a lot of businesses why should San Diego single out these two? Mayoral Spokeswoman Rachel Laing said, in the case of the coffee cart, it’s about upholding a contract.
“This woman was actually a tenant of the city in Civic Center Plaza,” she said. “And we have certain obligations that we have to meet, according to our lease contract with her.”
Laing said the city will waive the coffee cart’s rent for as long as it stays closed. She said, the city has been working hard to balance business interests, free speech and public safety in the plaza.
Councilman Carl DeMaio disagrees. DeMaio, who’s running for Mayor, is organizing a fundraiser for both business owners tonight. In a statement he said protestors have created an unsanitary and threatening environment at the Civic Center.
“I believe the City should have acted sooner to restore law and order at the Civic Center,” DeMaio said in the statement
So tell me something – how is it actually helpful to the coffee cart vendor to have their rent waived if they can’t open for business to begin with?? Like so many other mayors in other “occupied” cities where anarchy is taking root, “internal” crime is rising, and suffering small businesses are being threatened and harassed, San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders is derelict in his duty to break up the occupy encampments to ensure public health/safety/resources are not further negatively impacted.
If you’d like to do what the City of San Diego WON’T and assist these vendors in getting back on their feet, here’s how you can help:

Another one from the “You Can’t Make it Up” department:
San Franciscans who prefer to have their food in the nude are facing opposition. Last Thursday, the ironically named Supervisor Scott Wiener proposed an ordinance on public nudity etiquette that would require nudists dining in restaurants to forgo their naturalist ways and don clothing.
Public nudity is legal in San Francisco as long as the nude individual is not in a state of arousal. But last Thursday’s meeting of the Board of Supervisors’ Public Safety Committee resulted in a ruling that, if approved by the full Board, will ban practicing nudists from public eateries, the San Francisco Chroniclereports. Wiener’s proposal also requires those in the buff to place down a towel or barrier of some sort before they sit down on public seating.
“San Francisco is a liberal and tolerant city, and we pride ourselves on that fact,” Supervisor Wiener said in a statement. “Yet, while we have a variety of views about public nudity, we can all agree that when you sit down naked, you should cover the seat, and that you should cover up when you go into a food establishment.”
“Tolerant city”?? Not if you’re sane and conservative – even worse if you’re both at the same time. Also interesting is the fact that they only find public nudity a “health issue” at restaurants. What about at grocery stores? Concerts? Any place where you have to sit down for, ahem, service? Plus, some people you can have a “health issue” just by looking at nude. And – well, I’ll try to be delicate here – if you can’t be nude while in a ‘state of arousal’, that’s kinda hard (pun intended), right? I mean, from the way guys describe it, those situations can happen at the most inopportune times …
Occupy Wall Street is an experiment in communal living, with basic human needs on public display. Even, at times, very intimate human needs.
Outdoor sex has been a topic of discussion at quality-of-life meetings held each afternoon inside Zuccotti Park. Some people have expressed discomfort with sexual activity in their midst, but Andrew Carbon, 26 years old, said protesters generally are loathe to restrict anyone’s behavior.
“To be controlling someone’s own autonomy is a sensitive issue,” he said. “It’s a bad image if it’s visible, but policing it is wrong.”
Anyone else feel like they’ve been in a 60s-era time warp the last few weeks? Good grief.
Hundreds of activists with the Occupy Wall Street movement marched Saturday from Oakland City Hall, snaking their way through downtown and around Lake Merritt while they flouted an eviction order.
They closed thoroughfares and freeway ramps, invaded one bank and temporarily shut down another as they spread their message against economic inequality. But after three hours, they returned to City Hall, where they cooked food over open flames, danced and slid back into their tents.
Here’s video of the “invasion” and occupation of the one Chase Bank:
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Hundreds of protesters gathered in Cesar Chavez Park on Thursday to stand in solidarity with the growing nationwide demonstrations aimed at corporate greed, but some members of the peaceful event showed hostility to media members over basic questions about the goals of the protest.
“Occupy Sacramento,” which was portrayed as the local foothold for the rally that has entered its third week in front of Wall Street in New York City, drew impassioned speakers and a wide variety of viewpoints when the rally began Thursday morning, with demonstrations lasting past midnight.
Organizer Anthony Bondi said he has what he referred to as a “message team” working on the primary goals of the local protests, which he admitted “was kind of vague.”
“That message team will reveal that tomorrow [Friday] morning,” Bondi said.
“So you guys are in the process of forming the reasons why you are here?” asked CBS13 reporter Tony Lopez.
“Exactly correct,” Bondi said.
Please, please watch the video if you don’t do anything else tonight. To me, it sort of encapsulates the whole “Occupy Wall Street” movement in a nutshell: Full of clueless, aimless mostly 20-something hippie-like wanderers who would rather skip school and/or work who use the excuse of wanting to “be a part of the movement” in an effort to sound self-important, grown-up, and “informed.” Joined in shameless “solidarity” by union thugs. What miserable failures. Especially the “mother” who planned to camp out at the protest camp with her infant child, in spite of the fact that it was going to be a chilly night, and in spite of the fact that police had said that it was against the law to sleep there overnight. Shame on her for using her child as a kiddie human shield. Absolutely despicable.
BTW, there is an “Occupy” protest going on tomorrow here in Charlotte. I’ve disqualified myself from attending on the grounds that I put a great deal of value and importance on cleanliness and hygiene, not to mention knowledge and sanity …
I hope that by reading/watching actress Eva Longoria’s Tuesday comments to late night TV talk show host Jimmy Kimmel that the stupid doesn’t rub off on me. Scott Whitlock at Newsbusters has the transcript (you can also watch video clips of Longoria’s remarks at that same link):
EVA LONGORIA: But you know what, it’s a special privilege to meet our commander in chief.
JIMMY KIMMEL: Sure, yeah.
LONGORIA: And, you know, I’m a big Obama supporter no matter what he’s been through. He’s been beaten up the past couple of years.
KIMMEL: Did you tell him that?
LONGORIA: I did.
KIMMEL: And was he receptive?
LONGORIA: Well, he’s been very receptive for me, because I’m a big advocate for Latino issues. And, so, he’s been a big listener and he’s done a lot of coalitions and a lot of round tables regarding what we want changed and-
KIMMEL: When you say he’s a big listener, you’re making fun of his ears?
LONGORIA No! No! You know, he keeps getting beat up lately because there’s such an extremist movement happening and it’s a very dangerous- For me, it’s very dangerous because it’s not the character of America. It’s really under attack. And he’s been governing in, like, a state of emergency since the time he went into office so we haven’t really seen him do what he can do.
Yeah – opposition to our Dear Leader is just sooo dangerous, Ms. Longoria. Totally against what America’s all about. Yep. Of course, I’m sure you (along with your left wing colleague Morgan Freeman) didn’t feel that way when you and your fellow Hollywood blowhards viscerally opposed President Bush, right? Of course not. Since it was your side doing all the opposing and stuff. And this motley crew of militant left wing haters/fanatics/extremists who routinely compared Presdient Bush to Hitler and wished for his arrest and/or death? I suppose that was more along the lines of the type of “patriotism” Hollywood types like you view as more like “the American way.”
And I won’t even START on all the things Barack Obama HAS done, contra to Longoria’s ridiculous assertion that “we haven’t really seen him do what he can do.” WTH?!
Seriously, Hollywood is getting more and more repulsive (not to mention more creepily fascistic) by the day. So few sane folks in that crowd, outside of “Chuck” star Adam S. Baldwin and a few others. Props to the few on the Hollywood right who are not afraid to be loud and proud about where they stand. They are in a distinct minority and have earned our support.
FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — A Northern California teacher says he doesn’t want to hear a common courtesy in his classroom.
He’s even lowering students’ grades if they say “bless you” after someone sneezes.
Steve Cuckovich says the practice is disrespectful and disruptive. He’s banned saying “bless you” in his high school health class in Vacaville.
He even knocked 25 points from one student’s grade for saying the phrase in class.
Cuckovich says the policy has nothing to do with religion, but says the phrase is just a outdated practice and disrupts class time.
“When you sneezed in the old days, they thought you were dispelling evil spirits out of your body,” Cuckovich said. “So they were saying, ‘god bless you’ for getting rid of evil spirits. But today, I said what you’re doing doesn’t really make any sense anymore.”
The article went on to say that after parents complained about the deduction of points for saying “bless you” that Cuckovich stopped it. But he’s going to look into other ways of punishing the students for such so-called “eruptions of class time.”
Credit the College Republicans of UC Berkeley (1) for coming up with a brilliant way to make their point — and to recruit UCB’s humorless Left help in making it.
The background is that, many years ago, the people of California voted to end Affirmative Action ethnic and gender discrimination in the admissions process of the UC system. (2) The Left, however, has never given up trying to reinstate Affirmative Action re-legalize ethnic and gender discrimination. Their latest effort comes in the form of Senate Bill 185, passed by the legislature progressive oligarchy in Sacramento on September 9th and currently awaiting Governor Brown’s signature or veto.
The College Republicans decide to protest the bill by engaging in satire: they set up a table selling cupcakes, the price of which was determined by the customer’s ethnicity and gender — Whites were charged $2, while Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, woman, and almost any other minority one could think of were charged varying lesser amounts. The result was a predictable howl from the perpetually outraged Left, screaming that this was discrimination, to which the College Republicans would agree and ask “then doesn’t this make SB 185, which does exactly the same thing, also wrong and discriminatory?”
As you can guess, this went right over the heads of the enlightened, educated progressives there.
Be sure to click through to PJM for Zombie’s photo-essay (language warning) of the cupcake sale and protest, and hats off to the UCB College Republicans.
(1) They still exist at Berkeley? I thought they would have been hunted to extinction by the Progressive Tolerance Police. They must have secret hiding places in the steam tunnels…
(2) See? We’re not all a bunch of loopy Lefties out here.
During an interview that airs Friday, CNN’s Piers Morgan asked the actor, “Has Obama helped the process of eradicating racism or has it, in a strange way, made it worse?”
“Made it worse. Made it worse,” Freeman replied. “The tea partiers who are controlling the Republican party … their stated policy, publicly stated, is to do whatever it takes to see to it that Obama only serves one term. What underlines that? Screw the country. We’re going to do whatever we can to get this black man out of here.”
On the strength of the tea party, he said: “It just shows the weak, dark, underside of America. We’re supposed to be better than that. We really are.”
Hmmm. You know what I think would make America a better place? If ignorant, self-important left-wing nitwits would educate themselves beyond what the liberal MSM tells them to think. Once again, we have a case where a public figure in a position of great influence has taken the biased, tainted words and spin of ABC/CBS/NBC, black Democrat politicos and activists – and perhaps liberal blogs, too – and has mindlessly regurgitated their talking points as if to imply that he actually knows what he’s talking about.
Since he believes the Tea Party (and all conservatives for that matter) are so “racist”, I wonder if he views the black conservatives, especially those who have made their voices known since the election of Barack Obama to the presidency, to be “Uncle Toms” our “house slaves” like Harry Belafonte does? If he’s so concerned about race relations, why not stand up for the brave black conservatives who are under constant attacks from black liberals for “straying off the liberal plantation”? I wonder if this Hollywood pseudo-elitist has ever stopped to think for half a second about how racist, anti-America tripe from Obama’s longtime “spiritual mentor” has negatively impacted race relations in this country, how black Democrats and their asinine characterization of any and all opposition to this President as “racism” have set back race relations in this country, and how this President himself falsely classifying “Tea Party elements” as “racist” has not moved race relations forward in a way that “the enlightened class” told us this “post-racial” President would?
Not to mention how all of the bogus accusations mentioned above have devastatingly chilling effects on free speech, causing some people to fear speaking out against this administration’s policies for fear of the dreaded false accusation of racism?
To the Morgan Freemans of the world: THAT is what this country is supposed to be so much better than. Attempting to intimidate the political opposition into silence based on explosive false allegations that they are based on nothing more than “not liking the black man” is so far removed from everything this country is supposed to be about that I would think it would be obvious, especially to people who are supposed to be so much more “elevated” in status than I am. That is what the so-called “smart ones” should be preaching against. But no, they don’t. Because it’s so much better to buy wholesale into phony popular myths about a particular group of people rather than to actually think for yourself.
A mind is a terrible thing to waste. And bigotry is a terrible thing in which to be engaged, especially when the bigots themselves are lodging false accusations of bigotry against others. Maybe one day Morgan Freeman and other Hollyweirdos will understand that. But I won’t hold my breath. Nor should you.
