Truths about the police and gun control

**Posted by Phineas

Mike McDaniel is a former police officer who writes at PJ Media to burst some misconceptions and point out some uncomfortable truths to readers about the realities of policing and and why you should have little faith in gun control. As always, read the whole thing, but there is one point I want to especially emphasize:

Time Is Not On The Side Of The Good Guys

Response times for emergencies vary enormously from place to place. In some rural or semi-rural areas, emergency response is measured in hours. Even in towns or cities, a five-minute response — from the moment an officer receives the radio call until he arrives in a school parking lot — would be amazingly fast.

Consider, however, that a radio call likely would not have been made until someone at the school realized what was happening and made a call, a call that will take precious seconds — even minutes — to make and to be understood. By the time a radio signal flashes out, a shooter could easily have been shooting for five minutes or more.

And even when that first officer arrives in the parking lot, he will likely not have clear directions. Few police officers have so much as been inside every school in their jurisdiction; fewer know them well. Even if that first officer can hear continuing gunfire, unless by chance he happens to enter the school near the shooter it will take additional minutes to find and stop the shooter. Unless the shooter stops him first.

Every minute is an eternity in a school attack. Every minute costs lives. All competent police officers know this; it’s one of their greatest frustrations. They know that in virtually every imaginable scenario, the real issue is how many will die before they are in a position to do anything.

They also know that if the modern history of school shootings is any guide, the shooter will virtually always have killed himself long before they arrive.

In virtually every American school shooting, the police have had no role in stopping the shooter.

As a friend once told me, “When every second counts, help via 911 is minutes away.”

And anyone who believes any different, who puts their faith in restrictive gun laws and “gun-free zones,” is just a deluded fool.

#Trayvon: 2 months after shooting, MSM finally gives a more complete background on Zimmerman

Read this. It’s a lengthy and detailed account about the life of George Zimmerman prior to the tragic killing of Trayvon Martin, and once you read it, you’ll get the same impression of  Zimmerman that I and many others have gotten over the last couple of months in spite of the mainstream media’s desperate campaign to make him out to be a cold-blooded racist who set out to “murder” a black teenager: A quiet but enthusiastic and ambitious man concerned about his family and his neighborhood after a series of break-ins, not a nosy busybody/racist who wanted to snoop around in everyone’s business, specifically black people’s business because of some alleged “ingrained hatred” for them.

The story details his early life, his family make-up – which is decidedly mixed, and talks about the reason Zimmerman began arming himself in the first place: Not due to crime, but instead a dangerous neighborhood dog who at one point cornered his wife and had also scared his mother-in-law’s dog. It also mentions how Zimmerman opened up an Allstate insurance satellite office in 2004 in partnership with … a black man.

Not only is the background of George Zimmerman key to determining who he is and why it is likely he took the actions he did that late February night, but it’s extremely important to note the criminal history of the Retreat at Twin Lakes neighborhood where the incident took place. Reuters provides context:

By the summer of 2011, Twin Lakes was experiencing a rash of burglaries and break-ins. Previously a family-friendly, first-time homeowner community, it was devastated by the recession that hit the Florida housing market, and transient renters began to occupy some of the 263 town houses in the complex. Vandalism and occasional drug activity were reported, and home values plunged. One resident who bought his home in 2006 for $250,000 said it was worth $80,000 today.

At least eight burglaries were reported within Twin Lakes in the 14 months prior to the Trayvon Martin shooting, according to the Sanford Police Department. Yet in a series of interviews, Twin Lakes residents said dozens of reports of attempted break-ins and would-be burglars casing homes had created an atmosphere of growing fear in the neighborhood.

In several of the incidents, witnesses identified the suspects to police as young black men. Twin Lakes is about 50 percent white, with an African-American and Hispanic population of about 20 percent each, roughly similar to the surrounding city of Sanford, according to U.S. Census data.

One morning in July 2011, a black teenager walked up to Zimmerman’s front porch and stole a bicycle, neighbors told Reuters. A police report was taken, though the bicycle was not recovered.

But it was the August incursion into the home of Olivia Bertalan that really troubled the neighborhood, particularly Zimmerman. Shellie was home most days, taking online courses towards certification as a registered nurse.

On August 3, Bertalan was at home with her infant son while her husband, Michael, was at work. She watched from a downstairs window, she said, as two black men repeatedly rang her doorbell and then entered through a sliding door at the back of the house. She ran upstairs, locked herself inside the boy’s bedroom, and called a police dispatcher, whispering frantically.

“I said, ‘What am I supposed to do? I hear them coming up the stairs!'” she told Reuters. Bertalan tried to coo her crying child into silence and armed herself with a pair of rusty scissors.

Police arrived just as the burglars – who had been trying to disconnect the couple’s television – fled out a back door. Shellie Zimmerman saw a black male teen running through her backyard and reported it to police.

Here’s another key excerpt from the article:

A criminal justice student who aspired to become a judge, Zimmerman also concerned himself with the safety of his neighbors after a series of break-ins committed by young African-American men.

Though civil rights demonstrators have argued Zimmerman should not have prejudged Martin, one black neighbor of the Zimmermans said recent history should be taken into account.

“Let’s talk about the elephant in the room. I’m black, OK?” the woman said, declining to be identified because she anticipated backlash due to her race. She leaned in to look a reporter directly in the eyes. “There were black boys robbing houses in this neighborhood,” she said. “That’s why George was suspicious of Trayvon Martin.”

Hello? This is what many of us who have actually read between the lines on this story and dug for details most in the national mainstream media have ignored or misrepresented have been saying for weeks! There was a crime wave in Zimmerman’s neighboorhood and he was doing the neighborhood watch thing by looking out for his family and fellow residents. Nothing more and nothing less. I strongly believe he did not intend to catch up with Trayvon Martin that night when he got out of his SUV – that he merely meant to keep up with Martin’s whereabouts until police arrived so he could tell them where Martin was. My theory is that he was on his way back to his SUV, as implied by the 911 dispatcher than he needed to do, and Martin confronted him – and that’s when the physical encounter ensued.

If more details of this case come to light when it plays out in court – details that paint a far different picture than the one I see – I’ll admit I’m wrong. However, if what we know about this case so far is the extent of it, and I’m right about not only Zimmerman’s character but also his intent that night when he spotted Trayvon Martin walking in the neighborhood, I will NOT hold my breath awaiting apologies from any of the lynch mobbers in the mainstream media (ABC and NBC, for starters), opinion media (like columnists Charles Blow and commentators Keith Boykin and Roland S. Martin), and the race hustlers (like Sharpton and Jackson), all of who have a vested interest in stirring the pot and sensationalizing the hell out of this tragic story based on a pre-determined (and false) narrative – at the expense of a man’s day to day life, character,  and that of his family and friends.

Yes, Trayvon Martin, a teenager, is dead and that is unfortunate and heartbreaking. My heart goes out to his mother and father, and other family and friends. I hold absolutely nothing against them in wanting to seek answers and justice. But must the tragedy of h is death be compounded with another tragedy in what I see as the unjustified character assassination of George Zimmerman?

Assuming I’m right about what happened that night, the mainstream media will have a lot to answer for for the toxic, violent atmosphere they’ve been largely responsible for generating and fostering in the aftermath of the killing of Trayvon Martin. I’d like to think they’re slowly but surely learning their lessons as they dig and more information comes to light about George Zimmerman and the neighborhood in which he lived, but I’m not stupid. Once this case eventually fades out of the limelight another one will come along and they’ll do exactly as they did in this one, all in the name of  -once again – shaping narratives created to 1) soothe the liberal white guilt complex which permeates every fiber of our society, 2) turn it into a “Republican vs Democrat” issue (with Republicans being the evil raaacists, natch), and 3)broaden viewer/readership, sell advertising, earn the respect of colleagues and ultimately win journalism awards.

The beat will, unfortunately, go on.

#Trayvon: @MattGutmanABC redeems self w/ exclusive photo of Zimmerman’s bloody head

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote a detailed post on the overwhelming evidence of mainstream media bias and narrative setting in the tragic Trayvon Martin case, which has thrust America into yet another race war thanks in no small part to MSM outlets like NBC and ABC, but also because of the usual race hustlers like Rev. Al Sharpton and Rev. Jesse Jackson pulling their usual manipulative tricks. Specifically, I focused on the blatant bias of ABC News journalist Matt Gutman’s Twitter feed, in which he declared, without evidence, that George Zimmerman “stalked, cornered, and killed” Trayvon Martin “because he was black and wearing a hoodie” (see numerous examples of Gutman’s bias on Twitter here). The bias in that series of Tweets were primary examples of how the mainstream media, in the early days of their “reporting”, created a destructive, false, and dangerous race narrative about the killing of Trayvon Martin, even going so far as to describe Zimmerman as a “white Hispanic” … as if his “white” half couldn’t contain itself when it came to “stalking, cornering, and killing” a teenager “because he was black.”

The corrosive, deceptive, sloppy, and oftentimes lazy reporting by some in the mainstream media has had a devastating impact on public perceptions of this case, and as a result Zimmerman had to go into hiding prior to his second arrest – not because he didn’t want to face up to his actions in a court of law, but because of death threats from freaks and bounties put on him by none other than the New Black Panthers. Not only has his life been under threat, but the mainstream media’s one-sided, sensationalistic reporting on this story has made it to where it will be difficult for George Zimmerman to get a fair trial (not to mention Obama’s stupid comments about “if I had a son he would look like Trayvon” made matters even worse!).

Fortunately, Gutman, unlike so many other mainstream media journalists, has somewhat redeemed himself today with his exclusive photo of the back of George Zimmerman’s head, taken just minutes after he killed Trayvon Martin in what he claimed was self defense:

His surprising testimony came the same day that ABC News exclusively obtained a photograph showing the bloodied back of Zimmerman’s head, which was apparently taken three minutes after he shot and killed Martin. The photo could give credence to Zimmerman’s claim that Martin had bashed his head against the concrete as Zimmerman fought for his life.

Click here to view the image. Warning: graphic content.

The exclusive photo obtained by ABC News shows blood trickling down the back of Zimmerman’s head from two cuts. It also shows a possible contusion forming on the crown of his head. The original police report that night notes that the back of Zimmerman’s head was wet, and that he was bleeding from the nose and head.

Here it is (full version at the above link):

Does this boost George Zimmerman’s claims of self defense? You betcha it does. Does it make presumptuous media outlets like ABC and MSNBC look highly irresponsible for perpetuating the false myth that the grainy, crompressed video first reported on by Gutman and ABC where it was difficult to see any injuries on Zimmerman – meant he had to be lying about a self-defense claim? ABSO-FREAKIN-LUTELY.

Not sure whether the prosecution had this photo before deciding to charge George Zimmerman with 2nd degree murder, but if they did and still went forward with pressing that level of a charge, that makes them just as irresponsible as the mainstream media.

Even in light of this new photographic evidence, Zimmerman still may not get a fair trial in a court of law in the state of Florida. But in the court of public opinion, my opinion at least, the MSM can easily be proclaimed guilty of peddling a false racial narrative about George Zimmerman which has set into motion the deadly lynch mob mentality that has substituted for actual substantive discussion, debate, and analysis of this case amongst left wingers consumed with a thirst for identity politics game playing. The sentence for the mainstream media for their irresponsible reporting should be a thorough public shaming, currently in progress – and in the case of journalists like Matt Gutman, he’s guilty as charged as well – but in redeeming himself somewhat with this photo and report, he shows that not all agenda-driven mainstram media reporters are beyond hope.

And speaking of, let’s hope this is a just start. But I won’t be holding my breath – and nor should you.

#Trayvon: Video/screencap shows laceration to George Zimmerman’s head

I’m absolutely shocked that this was found and discussed on Chris Matthews’ MSNBC show Hardball (via @nickarama1):

Visit for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Here’s a screencap shot from the video:

George Zimmerman

George Zimmerman

Ron Allen, who is a Washington Post investigative reporter, was the one who pointed out when asked for commentary by Chris Matthews, that zooming in on the video indicated there were head injuries. If you listen/watch the video, make sure to note how Matthews sounds disappointed in Allen’s comments. Awww.

Another myth: BUSTED. Again.

I can’t tell you how huge this is, because the MSM, led by some VERY irresponsible “journalists” (Exhibit A) at ABC News, have all claimed how the video – which first surfaced on ABC – “undercut” Zimmerman’s claim that Trayvon Martin slammed the back of his head on the sidewalk. Martin’s father and the Martin family lead attorney have also claimed today the video shows Zimmerman was lying about head and nose injuries, and have suggested a “police cover-up.”

The only people engaging in a “cover-up” here are the national mainstream media and celebrity race hustlers who are trying to set narratives that are at odds with the FULL SCOPE of this story – what we know so far, anyway.

In related news: Guess who got caught selectively editing the 911 call Zimmerman made the night of the killing? SURPRISE: NBC’s Today Show. Via Hollywood Reporter (hat tip: @informedblackmn):

Critics say the “Today” show attempted to incite racial anger when it cut crucial seconds from audio of a phone call placed by George Zimmerman just before he killed the teenager.

NBC News is being excoriated in some circles – with competitor Fox News Channel leading the charge – for selectively editing audio of the 911 call placed by George Zimmerman just before he killed Trayvon Martin.

The NBC segment in question featured anchor Ron Allen and ran on the Today show on Tuesday. On Thursday, Sean Hannity and guest Brent Bozell played the NBC version of the 911 call and compared it with the unedited version.

In the NBC segment, Zimmerman says: “This guy looks like he’s up to no good. He looks black.”
The full version, though, unfolds like this:

Zimmerman: “This guy looks like he’s up to no good, or he’s on drugs or something. It’s raining and he’s just walking around, looking about.”

911 operator: “Okay. And this guy, is he white black or Hispanic?”

Zimmerman: “He looks black.”

After playing both versions, Hannity said: “They forgot the dispatcher’s question! How could NBC, in good conscience, do that?”

“This isn’t bias, this isn’t distortion, this is an all-out falsehood by NBC News,” answers Bozell, who runs a conservative watchdog group called the Media Research Center.

Toldjah So.

Keep an open mind on this, y’all. I repeat: Do NOT let the media tell you what to think. View/read/listen to ALL available facts and info and decide for yourself!

#FAIL: Democrat/MSM narratives fall apart in tragic #TrayvonMartin case

Another day, another Democrat/MSM myth / narrative busted (via Memeorandum):

The individual at the center of the controversial Trayvon Martin shooting is a registered Democrat.

George Michael Zimmerman, born Oct. 5, 1983, registered as a Democrat in Seminole County, Fla., in August 2002, according to state voter registration documents.

It is unclear whether he voted for President Barack Obama in 2008.

Some in the media have sought to blame Republican politicians and conservative activists for Martin’s death.

“[Republican politicians] reinforce and validate old stereotypes that associate the poor and welfare as criminal behavior with African-Americans and people of color, calling us lazy, undeserving recipients of public assistance. In the case of Trayvon, those festering stereotypes had lethal consequences,” said MSNBC political analyst and Democratic fundraiser Karen Finney.

According to the document, Zimmerman’s race is officially listed as Hispanic. The son of a white father and Peruvian mother, he has been described as a “white Hispanic” in most media reports.

In the scheme of things NONE of this should really matter but to race/party-obsessed Democrats desperate to gain traction in yet another tough election year, in the fighting spirit of Rahmbo they’re not letting the “opportunity” go to waste to once again attempt use a tragedy to paint their political opposition as “violent racists” — even though there was ZERO, ZILCH, NADA political motive for what happened between George Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin on the night of February 26, 2012.   Once you read the police reports, listen to the audio recordings, etc, you see that the race of the alleged victim and the alleged perp in this case aren’t relevant whatsoever except to a political  party that treats perpetual victimhood as a family value.  And, of course, the national main stream media has gone right along with it by jumping into a local story and selectively reporting information that “helps” create the (false) narrative that George Zimmerman was a meddling racist white man, influenced by conservatives, who SET OUT to murder a black teen because he was wearing a hoodie.

MediaI’ve written about this a lot on Twitter the last few days as I’ve attempted to gather my thoughts and actually READ and flesh out the information available out there to draw my own conclusions, unlike most left wingers, politicos, agenda-driven journalists, race hustlers, and the left’s key voting bloc:  uninformed, easily manipulated American citizens. I’m not hyperventilating about raaaaacism in America, nor am I deliberately glossing over key information, and I’m not speaking before I’ve spent a reasonable amount of time researching case specifics – much of which has been available since the week of the shooting, contra to sensationalistic “news” outlets like CBS News who try to paint old information as “new details.”

Let me give you an important link in all this that will help you draw your own conclusions as well.  The City of Sanford released, among other things, audio of the 911 calls from the night of the shooting, including the call from George Zimmerman (labeled “call 1”), which was made before he got out on foot to track Trayvon Martin’s whereabouts.  In another call, you can hear part of the struggle taking place – where someone is yelling for help.  Then you hear a shot and nothing after that.

Here are some things you also need to know:

— It has been confirmed (on the night of the shooting, not “recently”) by two EYEwitnesses, one a teenage boy out walking his dog that night and a resident of the townhome development, that George Zimmerman was the person screaming for help, on his back, getting beat up by Trayvon Martin. Martin’s father initially told the Sanford police that the voice he heard crying for help was NOT Trayvon Martin but  he has since changed his story.  So if you were thinking that George Zimmerman ambushed Trayvon Martin and killed him in cold blood, you’re wrong.

— It is confirmed as per the 911 call Zimmerman made that night that once he was on foot looking for Trayvon Martin that he had LOST sight of Martin.  Police say there is about a one minute gap in between the time of end of Zimmerman’s phone call to them where they don’t know what happened and after that one minute is what they hear on the 911 call made by the resident as the struggle is in progress.  Zimmerman told police that he’d lost sight of Martin and was headed back to his SUV when Martin confronted him and that’s when the altercation allegedly started.  Zimmerman’s claims are that Martin asked him what his problem was and said that he had a problem now, and punched him in the nose and slammed his head against the sidewalk and was on top of him, beating him up, and that he (Martin) was reaching for his (Zimmerman’s) gun, and that he (Zimmerman) had no choice but to shoot to save his life.

— Per the Sanford PD, Zimmerman’s physical appearance that night was consistent with someone who had been on the grass and hit in the back of the head and punched in the nose.

— Contra to the claims made by various mainstream media outlets, George Zimmerman did not make 46 calls to 911 in a year and a half’s time. He made that many calls since  2004.  Hardly the actions of a “meddling, busy body neighborhood watchman.”

— One of the 911 calls Zimmerman made was about a 7-9 year old black boy.  Daily Beast noted this in their reporting about his 911 call history but falsely claimed that no reason was given for why he called 911 on a 7-9 year old black boy. The left, of course, assumes he did it because he is so suspicious of black people that he’ll report an innocent child.  In fact, the very same police report indicated that the caller (George Zimmerman) had called 911 because the boy was wandering around alone near a busy street and he was concerned about his welfare.  Sure sounds like a racist to me. Not.

— FACT: The neighborhood in question has seen a rise in crime over the last year, and neighbors describe black youths as the primary culprits.  Naturally, if you’re paying attention to what’s going on in your neighborhood, you’re going to look for anyone who might be suspicious, including people who fit the description of the people who have been burglarizing homes in the area.

Spin Blvd Truth Ave— Contra to the MSM’s continual posting of an older picture of a baby-faced small Trayvon Martin, he was a 17 year old, 6’2″ 150-160 lb  teenager (not a “child” as so many left wingers are screaming out) who was in good enough shape to play high school football, in contrast to George Zimmerman – who is approximately 5’9″, over 200 lbs and out of shape.  Also, a profile picture on both Martin’s Facebook and Twitter pages shows him with gold grills for teeth, the kind you typically see on rappers and “gangstas.” The language and slang used on his Twitter account was gangsta slang (example: “Niggaz” was part of his Twitter name).   Yes, he had trouble in school with being suspended for, among other things,  having a baggie with trace elements of marijuana.  His Twitter feed indicated that he smoked it regularly.  And just like in most rap songs, he had an unhealthy disrespect for black women and violently fantasized about “Glock use.”

These are all FACTS, not “racism.”

— Some have argued as to the relevance of this information, claiming people noting this are “blaming the victim.” Not really.  What all of that tells us is that Trayvon Martin is exactly the kind of person you would think would angrily and aggressively confront someone he felt was following him, rather than maintaining a safe distance.

Here are some questions to ask yourself if you think George Zimmerman deliberately set out to kill a black teenager that night:

-Do those who plan on murdering someone typically call the police and give them their whereabouts before they commit the act? George Zimmerman did.

– Do those who plan on targeting someone for murder typically give the police all their personal information (name, address, telephone number) prior to commencing with their sinister plot? George Zimmerman did.

– Do those whose intent it was to kill someone tell the police to call them back so they can tell them where they are while they are tracking someone they view as suspicious in their neighborhood? George Zimmerman did.

– Do those who have a bloodlust for gunning down anyone who looks suspicious – black or otherwise – call 911 at all to report the activity rather than take the law into their own hands? George Zimmerman did.   In fact, on the phone call he made to 911, he first describes Trayvon was walking towards his SUV like Trayvon was going to confront him then.  If his intent was to kill, don’t you think he’d have pulled his gun at that time and fired?

– Do people who are on top of someone else beating them up usually call for help multiple times?

– Is it possible that George Zimmerman’s intent was to merely “keep a track” of Trayvon’s whereabouts until police got there rather than to have an altercation/confrontation? Remember, he told the 911 operator to have the police call him so he could tell them where he (GZ) was when they got there.

– Should George Zimmerman have stayed in his SUV and let the police handle this situation, as was urged by the 911 dispatcher? My answer is yes, especially hindsight being what it is.

– Did you know that George Zimmerman has also reported “suspicious-looking” Hispanic males to 911?

Keystone CopsThere have been suggestions by some that the Sanford PD royally screwed up the handling of the case. I see some things they probably should have done, but as far as colossal errors that would compromise the case to any significant degree, I’m just not seeing it.    One issue brought up by Trayvon Martin’s family was that George Zimmerman was not tested for drugs or alcohol, which I guess is a standard procedure after a violent gun crime.  Yes, the police should have done that – but they didn’t, and I’m not sure what it would have proved, anyway.  A narcotics detective rather than a homicide detective interviewed Zimmerman first than night. I’m not sure if he was interviewed by a homicide detective if it would have made a difference, but people with much more legal insight will hopefully weigh in with their thoughts on it so I/you can make your judgment call about that.

Much hay has been made by some conservatives about the fact that Martin’s mother Sybrina is trying to trademark her son’s name. I have zero issue with this and completely believe the family’s explanation that they don’t want anyone exploiting Trayvon Martin’s name for financial gain outside of them, and that any money they make would go to programs that they hope would ensure this type of situation doesn’t happen to another family.

My heart aches for Trayvon’s parents.  They’ve lost their son.  God bless them and comfort them. I will not disparage them, even though I despise the race pimps like Sharpton and  Jackson who are using them and their son to advance their own pathetic agendas.  Talk about dancing on graves. The Jacksons and Sharptons of this world, and the national MSM, is where most of my ire will be directed.

I hope Trayvon’s mom and dad get the answers they seek, whether it be through a trial where ALL evidence is laid out on the table, or over the long term as investigators at the local, state, and national level dig into the case.  Sadly, I doubt they ever will now that the combined circus of both the national MSM and Race Hustlers of America have come to town.  Once they show up, the desire for facts and truth are abandoned in favor of sensationalism, ratings, and personal/professional/political motives that have nothing to do with giving a grieving family any degree of peace of mind.

And don’t even get me started on our celebrity President’s insertion of himself into this case by saying if he had a son, he would look like Trayvon.  Way to show the “fairness” of the US Justice system, Mr. President.

Lastly, I don’t know everything about this case and don’t want to come off as acting like I do.  I don’t know everything that HAPPENED that night.  No one does, except George Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin, who unfortunately is no longer around to ask.  Was this preventable? Yes, if Zimmerman had stayed in his vehicle.  But he didn’t – I suspect more out of a misguided motivation to be a helpful hero to the police than anything else.  And because he didn’t, a young (troubled-sounding) teenager is dead, and we’re all left wondering how it got to that point.

Nothing in this post should be construed as me being on one side or the other. I am on the side of being as informed as I can be and finding out all the facts, and helping others in guiding them to information that will help them draw their own conclusions.  All I am saying with this is to keep an open mind.  My personal view is that the media/Dem narratives about this case are falling apart and that Zimmerman at best would face an involuntary manslaughter charge.  It’s clear he didn’t set out to kill anyone that night based on his 911 call. He had opportunities before the deadly confrtontation and he didn’t take them. He had opportunities on other occasions, too, with other “suspicious people” he reported but didn’t take them.

It is in fact possible to want justice for both Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman.  That is where I stand.

And now, the floor is yours.

Eric Holder is a funny man

**Posted by Phineas

So funny, in fact, it makes you wish you could smack him across his sanctimonious, hypocritical mouth:

The number of officers killed in the line of duty jumped 13 percent in 2011 compared with the year before — and U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder condemned the increase as “a devastating and unacceptable trend” that he blamed on illegal firearms.

The number of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty rose to 173 this year, from 153 in 2010, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund announced Wednesday. This year’s figure is 23 percent higher than 122 killed in the line of duty in 2009.

Holder said “too many guns have fallen into the hands of those who are not legally permitted to possess them,” in explaining the increase.

Four words for you, Mr. Attorney-General: Operation Fast and Furious (1). It takes a special kind of brass to stand there po-faced before the press and cluck your tongue about the number of officers killed by illegal weapons, considering agencies under your supervision supplied thousands of firearms (and even grenades?) to Mexican drug cartels, even laundering money for them.

Let’s forget for a moment the over 200 Mexican civilians, soldiers, and federal agents killed by weapons supplied by Operation Fast and Furious (aka “Gunwalker”). After all, no one cares about dead Mexicans, do they?

But let’s talk about cops, law-enforcement officers, since you’re so obviously concerned about their safety. Persons such as Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry, gunned down by smugglers in Arizona in late 2010: two weapons found at the scene were linked to Gunwalker, while a possible third “walked” firearm, which may have fired the killing shots, has gone missing.

And that makes this ending to the Politico piece so… special:

For much of the past year, one fatality in particular has weighed heavily on Holder’s mind, that of U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry, whose December 2010 murder sparked interest and public investigations into the Justice Department’s botched Fast and Furious gun-walking program.

Yeah, I bet it weighs heavily on his mind — as a reminder of his moral or even criminal guilt and his incompetence.

But, it not just one Border Patrol officer on some lonely stretch of the border, Eric. Guns linked to Operation Fast and Furious have been found at the scenes of at least 11 violent crimes inside the United States. There is evidence for other Gunwalker-style operations in states as far from the border as Indiana.

How many of those weapons have been involved in the cop-killings you decry, Mr. Attorney General? How much of that increase has been fed by your department? And yet you can stand there and feign outrage over “illegal firearms?”

Maybe you’re impressed with this farcical bit of mummery. Maybe the lackey media is, too.

But, I assure you, the rest of us aren’t.

via Pirate’s Cove

RELATED: Earlier posts about Gunwalker.

(1) Executive summary: Gunwalker was a joint operation of several American law-enforcement agencies and apparently run out of the US Attorney’s office in Arizona. Legitimate gun-dealers in Arizona were encouraged by these agencies to sell thousands of heavy firearms to “straw buyers,” persons acting as covert agents for Mexican drug cartels. No effort was made to trace or keep track of these weapons, which are only found again when they turn up at crime scenes or during police operations. Unlike an earlier (but very different) operation, the Mexican government was not consulted for this, nor were our agents in Mexico kept informed. As a consequence, people have died on both sides of the border and the DoJ is stonewalling to a degree not seen since Nixon. Yeah, it’s a big steaming mess.

#OccupySF is just like the Tea Party

**Posted by Phineas

Because Tea Partyers always carry shivs to their demonstrations and use them to cut cops:

One San Francisco police officer was slashed by a razor and another had his uniform torn and cheek cut in a clash with Occupy San Francisco protesters Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

About 3:30 p.m., near the Embarcadero and Broadway, police attempted to prevent marching demonstrators from blocking the intersection where MUNI light rail tracks are located.

A female protester emerged from the crowd and an “exacto razor blade attached to a pen or pencil-like object,” San Francisco police said in an email.

“The female slashed the inside of the officer’s hand and ran back into the crowd before the officer had time to realize he was cut,” police said.

Peaceful, tolerant, and sensitive. True American patriots, fighting for the rest of us.

PS: Dear Ed Lee, as the newly elected mayor of San Francisco, may I suggest your first move should be to clear out the Vandals? I mean, razor blade-wielding anarcho-socialists can’t be good for the tourism your city so depends on. Just a thought.

Let me repeat this: Women are NOT safe at #OWS communes

How many times does it have to be said?

Alleged sexual assaults at Occupy Wall Street camps have raised concerns about security in a handful of cities, including reports of rape and groping in tents at New York’s Zuccotti Park and a sex offender in Dallas having sex with an underage runaway.

“These protests have a history of welcoming everyone and just assuming they’re on your side,” said David Meyer, a professor of sociology at the University of California at Irvine, who studies protest movements.

The recent reports of assaults have created a problem the “Occupy” movement is being challenged to address head-on.

“We always encourage victims to go through the proper channels and contact police,” said Brendan Burke, 41, who helps run the security team in Zuccotti Park.

But that’s not always the case. Burke admitted there have been times when members of the community have taken it upon themselves to chase off men who exposed themselves in the park.

“If there is a consensus that someone is bothering another person, the community will take care of it,” he said. “Still, we always notify victims to contact police.”

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg — addressing the allegations of sexual assault today — said the reported practice of chasing perpetrators, rather than reporting them to police, is “despicable.” If the reports are true, he said, the protesters have made the city less safe.

I guarantee you Brendan Burke and any other member of any so-called “Occupy security team” are flat out lying. Occupy camps have an unwritten rule (written in the case of Occupy Baltimore) that essentially equates to the “no snitch” policy you’ve heard about that is followed in areas where crime rates are high. Instead, crime victims are encouraged to report crimes “internally” – not only that, but the alleged perps are also viewed as “victims” (surprise).

As I’ve said before, yes, we all get to enjoy the right to freedom of speech in this country, but when your free speech starts leading to public safety/health/resources issues, then public officials have the right – no, the obligation to step in and try to resolve the situation.

I’ll also say this: If you are a big city mayor who is having to try to figure out ways to handle the growing mobs at these Occupy communes, and you aren’t doing ANYTHING about it because you fear political blow back, you should be kicked out of office the next election cycle for dereliction of duty. It’s outrageous that most of these communes were even allowed to be “up and running” for even two weeks, let alone a month or more. The potential for crime, public health/sanitation issues, etc – not to mention the drain on already-strained city resources, is MORE than enough reason to say: ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

Mexican police operating from US soil

**Posted by Phineas

At some point, someone in authority is going to have to admit there is a war going on in Mexico and that our national security is at stake, because we’re already fighting it:

The Obama administration has expanded its role in Mexico’s fight against organized crime by allowing the Mexican police to stage cross-border drug raids from inside the United States, according to senior administration and military officials.

Mexican commandos have discreetly traveled to the United States, assembled at designated areas and dispatched helicopter missions back across the border aimed at suspected drug traffickers. The Drug Enforcement Administration provides logistical support on the American side of the border, officials said, arranging staging areas and sharing intelligence that helps guide Mexico’s decisions about targets and tactics.

Officials said these so-called boomerang operations were intended to evade the surveillance — and corrupting influences — of the criminal organizations that closely monitor the movements of security forces inside Mexico. And they said the efforts were meant to provide settings with tight security for American and Mexican law enforcement officers to collaborate in their pursuit of criminals who operate on both sides of the border.

Although the operations remain rare, they are part of a broadening American campaign aimed at blunting the power of Mexican cartels that have built criminal networks spanning the world and have started a wave of violence in Mexico that has left more than 35,000 people dead.

Many aspects of the campaign remain secret, because of legal and political sensitivities. But in recent months, details have begun to emerge, revealing efforts that would have been unthinkable five years ago. Mexico’s president, Felipe Calderón, who was elected in 2006, has broken with his country’s historic suspicion of the United States and has enlisted Washington’s help in defeating the cartels, a central priority for his government.

American Predator and Global Hawk drones now fly deep over Mexico to capture video of drug production facilities and smuggling routes. Manned American aircraft fly over Mexican targets to eavesdrop on cellphone communications. And the D.E.A. has set up an intelligence outpost — staffed by Central Intelligence Agency operatives and retired American military personnel — on a Mexican military base.

Two things I’ll say about this. The first is that I’m glad it’s happening. For too long Mexico has hidden behind a chest-thumping nationalism (1) and refused almost any serious cooperation. That the Calderon administration is changing this policy, albeit quietly, at great political risk to itself shows they recognize the serious problem they have, that it’s also a military and no longer just a law-enforcement problem, and that they need help. While Mexico is not yet a failed state, the danger signs are there.

Second, while I’m glad we’re cooperating with the Mexicans and giving them help, it would be really nice if our own government would admit there is a serious security problem on our southern border and make a credible effort to secure it, including fencing where appropriate and Border Patrol forward operating bases (FOBs) in others.

And if the US government really wants to help Mexico, maybe it should stop helping to arm the cartels.

So, when do we resume cavalry patrols?

(1) Just because of that little dust-up in 1846 that cost them half their country. Jeez, what grouches.

Cops vs. Teachers over support for cop-killer

**Posted by Phineas

Last week I wrote about the nauseating resolution passed by the California Federation of Teachers in support of convicted murderer Mumia Abu-Jamal. Not surprisingly, the Fraternal Order of Police took exception to this. So much so, in fact, that the head of the organization sent the national leader of the American Federation of Teachers a nasty-gram:

I cannot understand why the CFT, which like us represents rank-and-file employees, would support a murderer. In fact, Abu-Jamal’s victim was a rank-and-file law enforcement officer and a member of F.O.P. Local Lodge #5 in Philadelphia. I can only assume that the membership did so out of ignorance of the facts or that they were misled by this killer’s propaganda machine. I want to set the record straight and would respectively, yet urgently, request that you and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) publicly reject this repugnant resolution.

Big Government has the full letter.

AFT has neither responded to the FOP letter, nor have they given any indication they will repudiate the CFT’s resolution.

A question for the leadership and the rank-and-file of the Fraternal Order of Police: Are these really the kind of people you want to be associated with?
